Exhibition. Paintings. Music
A survey of 19th century Nationalism in the Arts through the works of Russian composers, members of the Mighty Five. Despite mockery from mainstream critics and audiences, the group members continued their pursuit of finding their unique voices. Their involvement with artists in other fields led to frequent connections between visual art and music. Join us on an expedition to the past as Mr. Begelman explores and deconstructs the rise of great Russian music through the works of prolific geniuses. Featured composer Musorgsky
March 3:

Impressions and Passions
Step into one of Claude Monet’s gardens and delight in the Impressionist period when music sought to convey moods or capture feelings, using unusual ways of looking at ordinary things. Mimicking the visual artists of the time, the structure of a work of art became subordinate to its effect. In the years containing the first movie theater and the invention of color photography, the world was brimming with opportunities to fill life with audio and visual encounters. Discover how a relatively small and rogue, in the eyes of many traditionalists, group of painters started one of the most recognized styles in the world that translated into music and literature. Be impressed and join us! Featured composers Debussy and Ravel
April 7:

Musical brush
Can a composer be inspired by a painting? Can a painting be brought to life with music by giving the canvas a voice? Can you paint sound? Can a story be told with brush strokes or notes instead of words? In search of answers, come with us on a journey through times to witness how visual and musical artists inspired each other and produced some of the most creative works of art. Featured composers Liszt, Respighi.

Ferry Road Public Engagement Plan
The overall goal is to create mixed-income housing and public recreation opportunities while preserving as much of the land as possible using sustainability principles. This aligns with the goals of the Buncombe County 2025 Strategic Plan by emphasizing environmental stewardship, creation of recreational opportunities, and development of affordable housing. Each of the development concepts features preservation of acreage and the use of additional land tabbed for parks, trails, and other conservation measures. (See Ferry Road Land Phase 1 document below for development concepts.)
In addition to environmental stewardship and housing, Commissioners have expressed interest in utilization of the site for a potential early childhood center, health care facilities, and other public-serving amenities that are beneficial for communities.
In the coming months, Buncombe County will work with neighboring homes, community organizations, and the general public to get more input on the desired development option and ways the project can reflect the community’s needs.

A debut that combines historical nonfiction with travel books, for fans of Bill Bryson and Rinker Buck, In Pursuit of Jefferson is the story of an American on a journey through Europe, following the epic trail of Thomas Jefferson. A controversial founding father. A man ready for a change. And a completely unique trip through Europe. In 1784, Thomas Jefferson was a broken man. Reeling from the loss of his wife and humiliated from a political scandal during the Revolutionary war, he needed to remake himself. And to do that, he traveled. Traipsing through Europe, Jefferson saw and learned as much as he could, ultimately bringing his knowledge home to a young America. There, he would rise to power and shape a nation. More than two hundred years later, Derek Baxter, a devotee of American history, stumbles on an obscure travel guide written by Jefferson—Hints for Americans Traveling Through Europe—as he’s going through his own personal crisis. Who better to offer advice than a founding father himself? Using Hints as his roadmap, Baxter embarks on a new journey, following Jefferson through six countries and countless lessons. But what Baxter learns isn’t always what Jefferson had in mind, and as he comes to understand Jefferson better, he doesn’t always like what he finds. In Pursuit of Jefferson is at once the story of a lifechanging trip through Europe, an unflinching look at a founding father, and a moving personal journey. With rich historical detail, a sense of humor, and boundless heart Baxter explores how we can be better moving forward only by first looking back.
Derek Baxter graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in history. He is currently an attorney who lives in Virginia. Afteryears of research, Derek made nine separate trips abroad on Jefferson’s trail. You can follow his adventures with Thomas Jefferson atwww.jeffersontravels.com

Our Lenten program this year will be led by the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary. These Episcopal Nuns live at their convent in Sewanee, TN and are members of a monastic movement that goes back to 1865 when their order was started in New York. The sisters will take turns sharing with us the richness of their ancient monastic way of life. Together we will learn about their Benedictine way of living that includes prayers, work, radical hospitality, rich community, accountability, and more. While many think of monks and nuns as being something restricted to the Roman Catholic Church, the Episcopal Church has a long history of monastic life that continues to influence our churches to this day.
For the first session on March 3, we will host the Prioress of the Community of St. Mary, Sister Madeleine Mary, who will travel from Sewanee to be with us. Sister Madeleine Mary has been living in religious life for over 50 years having entered the cloister after teaching middle school in New York and spending time advocating for environmental justice issues.
In the sessions following on March 10, March 17, March 24, March 31, and April 7, we will meet in person at the Parish Hall to gather for a virtual visit with other Sisters from the Order, including Sister Hannah Winkler, who made her life profession in January 2021, and Sister Elizabeth Grace, who will share on the Rule of St. Benedict’s emphasis on humility. You may also participate on Zoom for any of the sessions, but we will hope you will join us in person if you can. Click here to sign up to be emailed a Zoom link.
All are also invited to join us for Evening Prayer in the Atrium Chapel of the Parish Hall at 6:00pm on each Thursday in Lent (March 3 – April 7). Dinner follows at 6:30pm in the Parish Hall. RSVP and pay for dinner by clicking one of the boxes below by Tuesday of each week so food is not wasted. Masks will be required except when eating.

MARCH 3, 10, 17, 24 (make-up, if needed: March 31)—Thursdays, 6:30–8:30pm
In this four-class series, explore the power of memory and how to utilize photography and printmaking to create calls to the significant ties in our lives. Inspired by Robert Rauschenberg’s Ruminations series (on view now in the Ruminations on Memory exhibition), guest artist Liz Williams will demonstrate a variety of ways to use collage, printmaking, and alternative photography techniques. Techniques will include monoprints with gelli plates and image transfers with gel medium, blender pens, transfer paper, and wax paper. Class time includes exhibition visits, presentations, discussions, group shares, and critiques; individual preparation between classes includes taking and printing photographs in response to prompts. Although class projects will be analog, Liz will demonstrate how to create digital collages.
Instructor Liz Williams has worked as a visual artist for ten years, exploring the line between the real and fantastic elements of life in the South in a variety of mediums including photography and illustration. Her work ranges from t-shirt designs calling for the dismantling of anti-LGBTQ legislation for Equality NC to portraits of nationally acclaimed musicians to animations of family cats. In 2019, she joined Campaign for Southern Equality as the Artist in Residence and moved on to become the Program Manager for CSE’s Southern Equality Studios (SES), a project that explores how the arts can be a catalyst and force in achieving lived and legal LGBTQ equality across the South. Liz has also served as Revolve Gallery’s First Draft Artist in Residence and created the series “2020 Visions,” which created narratives for Southern queer artists who created work during Covid quarantine. Through her work with SES, Liz has recently become the recipient of the Tzedek Impact Award and Center for Crafts’ Craft Futures Fund.
Please note:
- This Adult Studio class is held indoors in the Museum’s John & Robyn Horn Education Center.

The East Asheville Library is excited to announce that author Lisa See will be joining them over Zoom to discuss their March book club pick, The Island of the Sea Women. Lisa See is the New York Times bestselling author of ten novels including Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, and Shanghai Girls.
We are excited to announce that author Lisa See will be joining us over Zoom to discuss this month’s book pick, The Island of the Sea Women.
I just moved to Asheville in June. I’d like to meet and create community with people who are curious, like to laugh, value inner growth and are good-hearted. Come with your different opinions, unique sharing and stories. For each gathering they’ll be a short intro for people and a different topic of discussion. Topic would include, an event that changed my life,” a book, movie or play that altered you, or tell us something you imagine will be entirely new to us…like “how a singer interprets a song.” Any suggestions for future topic would be welcome.
This will be a virtual event on Zoom. I will send you a link for the meetup a few days prior to the meeting.
***What to expect:
A safe and positive space to meet interesting people and comfortably share interests, joys, and challenges.
***Agenda:
Each member introduces themselves in 2 minutes. A topic to share will be suggested (if the group is larger than 10, breakout rooms will be created). All members will return to the main forum after 10 minutes in smaller groups and have the option to share their thoughts from the breakout room or just hang back and listen or ask questions.

Félix González-Torres, “Untitled” (L.A.), 1991, green candies individually wrapped in cellophane, endless supply, overall dimensions vary with installation, original weight: 22.7 kg (50 lbs). How can an archive reflect artworks that are constantly changing? How can an archive incorporate diverse points of view? How can an archive foster complex thinking and questioning?
The specific, yet open-ended nature of Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s work necessitates a multifaceted approach to archival practices in order to record the unique decisions made around each manifestation and installation of the work, as well as to represent the evolution of the work over time. Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s work Untitled (L.A.), 1991, is a featured work in our special exhibition Ruminations on Memory. The specific choices made by the Museum around the manifestation and installation of Untitled (L.A.) will contribute to the history and trajectory of the work, and will be represented within the archive around the artists’ work.
Join Hilary Schroeder, assistant curator, and Brittni Zotos, director of archives at Andrea Rosen Gallery, in conversation as we explore ways in which archives are a form of memory keeping and how archival practices around Gonzalez-Torres’s work respond to the nature of experiencing the work itself.
Brittni Zotos is director of archives at Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York. Brittni received a BA in Art History from Wesleyan University and has 10 years of research and archives experience in the context of galleries, artist studios, and arts organizations.
THIS PROGRAM IS BEING OFFERED VIRTUALLY AND IN-PERSON. Space is limited; registration is required for virtual participants but not for in-person. To register for virtual attendance, use the ticket link above or call 828.253.3227 x124.
