For educators: teachers, camp counselors, home-school parents, childcare professionals, summer program leaders, and more, the Pollinator Exploration Kit provides excellent tools. Bee City USA – Hendersonville is eager to help you share the wonder of pollinators with children you teach. The kit includes sets of 12 sturdy child-size insect nets, special bug capture bubbles, bug boxes with magnifying lids, and magnifying glasses. Two pop-up insect habitats and two sets of laminated fold-out field guides (NC Trees & Wildflowers, NC Butterflies & Moths, Bees & Other Pollinators) are also included. The kit can be loaned for up to a week (as available) and may be picked up and returned weekdays 9am-4pm.

  • August 8 – ErwinWhat is better than hanging out at a park, pool, or community center? Doing so while participating in fun games! This summer, the Buncombe County Recreation Services will be visiting county pools, parks, and community centers to provide free entertaining activities for anyone in the community.

    This includes yard games, pool activities, balls, and other activities for enjoyment. While the games can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age–with something available for anyone–the programming is aimed at those 5 to 15 years of age.

    This is part of the CORE program (Community Outreach and Recreation Experiences) which seeks to provide fun to everyone in the community.

    “We were interested in expanding recreational opportunities to communities that may or may not have parks and facilities,” says Mac Stanley, program coordinator with the County’s Recreation Services. “Also, an opportunity to expand and collaborate with county community centers such as Big Ivy, Sandy Mush, and Bent Creek Community Park. Core programming is designed to diversify our programming opportunities and outreach into the community.”

    From June through August, Recreation Services will be out and about in its CORE van, a green, Ford Transit van outfitted with County logos and a big sasquatch on the back.

Gardening for Pollinators

Summer League Basketball Classic

Our Summer League Basketball program is dedicated to helping build athletic skills in teenagers (ages 13-17) through learning the fundamentals of basketball and the development of confidence and a sense of teamwork.
Registration Opens on April 10- June 12
Age Divisions: (Age as of June 20,2023)
Ages:13-17 (Co-ed)
Teams will practice/have games at max 1-2 times per week. The specific day of practice/games will depend on which team each player is placed on. The days used for this program are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays.

There will be an evaluation.The overall purpose of the evaluation/draft is to ensure fairness amongst teams. All talent levels are welcomed and each player will be placed on a team. Evaluations will observe each -players fundamentals of basketball. For example, dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and more. Our goal is for each player to progress throughout the season and have an enjoyable experience!

Evaluation Date: Tuesday June 20 at 6:30PM at Shiloh Gym (121 Shiloh Road)
Please note, we do not base teams on day of the week.

Take a swing at this new Golf camp that will teach you the basics of golf from scoring, swings, and more! Come with us as we travel to learn all about one of the world’s oldest sports! Grove Street Community Center offers a variety of activities that include socializing and meeting new people, table games, trivia, cornhole, crafts, and more. Senior Dining

Senior Congregate Dining is a year around program offered to Senior 60+ who are registered with Buncombe County’s Council on Aging Senior Meal Site. A Cappella Alive is a small non-profit chorus group that are looking for a few new members to join in as they bring joy to others by singing. Two pop-up insect habitats and two sets of laminated fold-out field guides (NC Trees & Wildflowers, NC Butterflies & Moths, Bees & Other Pollinators) are also included. The kit can be loaned for up to a week (as available) and may be picked up and returned weekdays 9am-4pm.

Our gardens and landscapes are home to many beneficial organisms besides the pollinators we know and love. Some of these lesser-known organisms have vital roles in healthy garden ecosystems, providing organic waste reduction and natural pest control services. Join Matt Bertone, director and entomologist for the NC State Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, as he shares his expertise and teaches us how to encourage these important helpers in our gardens.

Matt Bertone is an entomologist with expertise in arthropod and other animal identification. He is also a biodiversity expert and avid photographer.

Eliada Campus Farm Tours

Join us at Eliada Home’s campus for a small group guided walking Farm Tour. Tours last approximately 1 hour. Participants will learn about outdoor and greenhouse growing practices, aquaponics, hydroponics, market gardening, corn maze production, and about our equine therapy program.

Reservations required. There is no cost, but donations to the non-profit agency are greatly appreciated.

We recommend bringing the following: comfortable shoes for walking on pavement and grass, hat, sunglasses, and water. This tour is not handicap accessible and will require participants to climb stairs and walk on uneven ground.

Summer League Basketball Classic

Our Summer League Basketball program is dedicated to helping build athletic skills in teenagers (ages 13-17) through learning the fundamentals of basketball and the development of confidence and a sense of teamwork.
Registration Opens on April 10- June 12
Age Divisions: (Age as of June 20,2023)
Ages:13-17 (Co-ed)
Teams will practice/have games at max 1-2 times per week. The specific day of practice/games will depend on which team each player is placed on. The days used for this program are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays.

There will be an evaluation.The overall purpose of the evaluation/draft is to ensure fairness amongst teams. All talent levels are welcomed and each player will be placed on a team. Evaluations will observe each -players fundamentals of basketball. For example, dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, and more. Our goal is for each player to progress throughout the season and have an enjoyable experience!

Senior Congregate Dining is a year around program offered to Senior 60+ who are registered with Buncombe County’s Council on Aging Senior Meal Site.
