(Flat Rock, NC) Musical students, alumni and instructor Dewitt Tipton of Furman University will perform a special choral evensong and organ recital Sunday, June 23rd. It will be held inside the sanctuary of The Episcopal Church of Saint John in the Wilderness at 4pm.
“The music program of the church is pleased to offer this service to the community in commemoration of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, our patron saint,” says Tipton, also organist and music director of Saint John in the Wilderness.
Featured choral music will come from across the centuries, including recently composed organ pieces by Robert Powell of Greenville, South Carolina. Maggie Ramirez, Abbie Schlictmann, Salleigh Harvey, Will Booker and Shalick Smith are among the performers.
Tipton adds, “The lovely and contemplative service of Choral Evensong is one of the most beautiful traditions of the Anglican Church. Included in the liturgy are hymns, ancient canticles, scripture readings, prayers, choral anthems and organ music.”
Admission is free, however donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit the newly constructed Parish Hall.
For more information, call (828) 693-9783 or visit www.stjohnflatrock.org.
Eleanor Underhill tried her hand at a variety of instruments–piano, trombone, guitar, and ukulele–before settling on the banjo, the instrument that has defined her sound. At age 14, she composed her first song and has since amassed a vast catalogue of music that has supported the creation of five albums with various projects. Born in Williamsburg, VA, Underhill found her new home of Asheville, North Carolina after attending a small liberal arts school—Warren Wilson College—in the area. Her unique open-back banjo style, salty-blues vocals, and prolific writing ability has contributed to the success of her band, Underhill Rose, who has toured nationally and overseas while garnering international acclaim on the Americana scene since its formation in 2009.
In 2014, Underhill formed a non-touring, side-project band of prominent Asheville musicians called Eleanor Underhill & Friends. Thriving on boundary pushing and genre bending, this all-star group has built a growing following in the Asheville area. Underhill also plays solo throughout western North Carolina and successfully wrote, recorded, and produced a debut solo album—Navigate the Madness—in the fall of 2018. Called “…a stunning work of a gifted, visionary singer-songwriter…” by Jim Simpson of Asheville Citizen-Times, Underhill’s latest work is a testament to her far-reaching influences and abilities. Underhill has also won top honors at Asheville’s Songwriting Idol Contest, played on the Grammy award winning song “Mind Over Matter” by Kid-Hop artist, Agent 23 Skidoo, and was selected to perform in the Asheville All-Star Band in the summer of 2018.

There’s more than Chunky Monkey and New York Super Fudge Chunk in downtown Asheville’s Ben & Jerry’s this summer.
Art created by Vance Elementary School fifth grade students of art educator Robbie Lipe is now on display on the brick walls opposite the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The exhibit depicts the students’ interpretation of the artist Kehinde Wiley and the contemporary portraits he creates inspired by traditional Baroque paintings. It will be featured through the end of the summer.
“Ben & Jerry’s is excited about showcasing art from the community inside our scoop shop,” said general manager Chris Carter. “Making use of our walls to show what local artists are creating complements our social mission — to be actively involved in the places we live and do business. I hope this is the first of many art exhibits on our walls.”
Carter gave all the credit for the exhibit to Ms. Lipe, who teaches kindergarten through 5th-grade students at Vance Elementary. She was named the North Carolina Arts Educators Association “Art Educator of the Year” in 2017-2018.
Ben & Jerry’s is located at 19 Haywood Street. Current hours are Monday-Thursday 12 pm to 10 pm; Friday 12 pm – 11 pm; Saturday 11:30 am – 11 pm; Sunday 11:30 am – 10 pm.
For more information, call Carter at 310-601-6247.
