When a computer programmer and hacker (Keanu Reeves) begins to question his reality, a chain of events is unlocked that could save the human race. The Rocky Horror Show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O’Brien. A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through to the early 1970s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his new creation, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man named Rocky Horror, complete “with blond hair and a tan”.

Oscar-winning producer Melissa Berton, creator of the short documentary “Period. End of Sentence.” will speak at Warren Wilson College on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.

“Period. End of Sentence.” follows a group of women in rural India as they learn how to operate a machine that makes low-cost, biodegradable sanitary pads, which they sell to other women at affordable prices. The film won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject this year, and it sparked a worldwide conversation about menstrual justice and menstrual equity.

Berton, who is a graduate of Warren Wilson’s MFA in Creative Writing, works as a high school English teacher at Oakwood School in Los Angeles. After learning that the lack of hygienic sanitary products and taboos around menstruation cause nearly a third of Indian girls to miss school during their periods, her class became inspired to raise money for a pad machine and to create a documentary. They raised funds by doing bake sales and yogathons.

At the lecture at Warren Wilson College, Berton will speak about the importance of girls staying in school and how youth voices can contribute to the global movement for education. She will also give an overview of “how that whole crazy journey took place.”

The lecture will be followed by a showing of the documentary and Q&A session. The event is free and open to the public. It will take place in Warren Wilson College’s Kittredge Theatre. Register online at www.warren-wilson.edu/lecture.

This fall, Muddy Sneakers will host Asheville’s only screening of Mountainfilm on Tour for the third year, debuting at a new downtown location. The 2019 edition of Mountainfilm will take place Saturday, Nov. 23 at The Orange Peel in Asheville, offering a chance for the community to come together to celebrate connection to the natural world and support a regional outdoor science education program.
The evening will feature a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed, and inspiring documentary films curated from the Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colo. This year’s lineup includes thoughtful storytelling and dazzling cinematography exploring themes connected to Mountainfilm’s mission: using the power of film, art, and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world.
A Mountainfilm presenter will guide the audience through the program, providing insight on the films, filmmakers, and subjects. This popular hands on class will leave you with the skills and knowledge to inoculate your own mushroom logs at home. We’ll start with a short presentation inside to give you the technical knowledge to make good mushroom growing decisions, and then move outside to get some hands on time with drilling and inoculating mushroom logs.

A comprehensive handout will be included. Additional mushroom plugs and spare inoculated logs will be sold separately.

Bring warm clothing for the outside section of the class.

We will be limiting the class to 40 people so that everyone can have a fulfilling hands on learning experience.

This one-day workshop will give you an in-depth look at soil health and provide a hands-on opportunity to work with soil monitoring in the field. Participants will learn about how to manage the four ecosystem processes and some simple soil tests you can use to promote soil health and productivity on your farm. A local farmer with experience in holistic management will share the soil management practices that they use to promote soil health, and produce high quality, profitable crops.

Effectively managing weeds can be the most labor-intensive task for ecological crop and vegetable production. This one-day workshop will cover common weed biology, ecology, and identification. You will also learn preventative as well as mechanical and cultural practices you can implement on your farm to reduce weed pressure, save time, and money.

Sarah will demonstrate techniques and offer troubleshooting advice on the Dos and Don’ts of home fermentation. Sarah Archer is the Owner and Fermentress behind local business Serotonin Ferments. She has been a fermenting enthusiast for 15 years, and over that time has honed her skills from novice to expert. She is passionate about sharing her love for food, health, and community, and truly believes that Food is our Medicine. Supporting local, organic farmers is a keystone of her process, and her creations are often inspired by what is growing in abundance locally.
