The Wiz
Nov 24 @ 8:00 pm
Peace Concert Hall

Everybody look around! The Tony Award®-winning Best Musical that took the world by storm is back and coming to Greenville.

An all-new production of the groundbreaking musical The Wiz returns “home” to stages across America on a limited Pre-Broadway tour.

This revolutionary musical, adapted from The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, changed the face of Broadway—from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock, and 70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. A dynamite infusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop brings a whole new groove to easing on down the road.

The extraordinary cast features Alan Mingo, Jr. (“Doom Patrol,” Kinky Boots) as The Wiz, award-winning recording artist Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody Betts as Aunt Em and Evillene, Kyle Ramar Freeman (A Strange Loop) as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson (Sharper, A24) as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson (On Top of the World, Studio Album) as the Scarecrow. Nichelle Lewis(Hairspray National Tour) makes a star-turn Broadway debut as Dorothy.

Oz has been reimagined by a star studded creative team, led by director Schele Williams (Broadway’s upcoming The Notebook, revival of Disney’s Aida), choreographer JaQuel Knight (Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’, Black is King), scenic design by Academy Award ®-winning Hannah Beachler (Black Panther, Beyoncé’s Black is King and Lemonade), costume design by Emmy Award®-winning and two-time Academy Award®-nominated Sharen Davis (Ray, Dreamgirls), lighting design by Barrymore Award-winning Ryan J. O’Gara (Thoughts of a Colored Man), sound design by Jon Weston (Parade), projection design by Daniel Brodie (Motown the Musical), and wig design by Charles LaPointe (MJ the Musical). Amber Ruffin (“The Amber Ruffin Show,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers”) pens additional material for William F. Brown’s trailblazing book. Charlie Smalls’ Tony Award®-winning score features iconic hits “Ease on Down the Road,” “Home,” and Luther Vandross’ “Everybody Rejoice,” with new musical moments from Joseph Joubert (music supervision, orchestrations, & music arrangements), Allen René Louis (vocal arrangements, music arrangements), and an Emerald Ballet composed by Timothy Graphenreed.

The Wiz runs approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, including intermission.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred
Nov 25 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sigal Music Museum
Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

French Broad River Park
Activation in the Park

Activation in the Park

French Broad River Park: Go to the parking lot off of Riverview Drive, which is off of Amboy Rd. Find the cobalt blue canopy tent!

We will be as close to as directly across the parking lot as we can, near the water, with the tent (go past the bathrooms and head to the water). So, you should be able to find us pretty easily if it’s your first time).

We’ll enjoy meditations/visualizations, psychic ability empowerment, chakra activations, and lively discussions about how we can participate in the evolution of the new earth… a world where truth and the ethos of love (e.g.: Law of One) are the guiding forces.

All who are interested in spiritual growth and evolution and getting to know others who are “on their wavelength” are welcome.

NOTE: Bring a chair, pillow, or towel to sit on, an open mind, and energies of love, receptivity, and curiosity.

We look forward to meeting you!

TIMALIKESMUSIC’S:  THAT 90’S LOVE
“Yo, tonight we are all family. So, at the count of three, everyone yell out your favorite curse word.”

So starts a typical show by R&B/Funk keyboardist, vocalist and band leader TimaLikesMusic. Backed by drums, bass, trumpet, guitar, and a second keyboardist, TimaLikesMusic shows are full of James Brown-style energy and musical comedy.

“When I say ‘I like’ you say ‘Music’… I Like – Music, I Like – Music…”

Tima’s big break came during Covid when she appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about her viral series of humorous jingles posted on Instagram’s Reels platform. Since then, Tima has composed music for companies & brands including Iliza Shlesinger’s 2022 Netflix special Hot Forever, Ralph Lauren’s short film, A Portrait of the American Dream, National Public Media podcast sponsorships, and more. Her work on a podcast created in conjunction with YouTube and National Public Media, The Upload: Rise of the Creator Economy, won Best Branded Podcast at the 2022 PR Daily Content Marketing Awards.

“Fans adore her relatable content — she’s sung about everything from the awkwardness of social interactions, to how to properly wear a face mask, to the frustration of getting only one sauce packet with her fast food meal.” – NY Post
Tima’s summer 2023 EP, Love, Daddy Princess, is a nod to the smooth 80’s and 90’s R&B era. Listen carefully and you can hear the influences of Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, and Sade.

Tima also produces and performs TimaLikesMusic Presents: That 90’s Love – old-school R&B dance parties in which she hosts and DJs, accompanied by a live drummer. Most of her live shows start with the live band set, leading into the TimaLikesMusic Presents: That 90’s Love after party.

After selling out venues in Brooklyn, NY and Washington D.C., Tima signed with Wasserman super agent Andrea Johnson. More tours have since been booked, more music has been recorded, and more plans have been made. You should probably jump on this train before it leaves you behind at the station.

The beginning piano notes of “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton ring out. The audience roars. “You want some funk on it?” The audience becomes a crowd, and the roar grows. “We gonna put some funk on it. Ready?!”

NOLAN TAYLOR

Nolan Taylor is a singer-songwriter based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. His voice ranges from the soft fall of rain to a heavy crack of thunder, underlining songs of hard times, wild nights and heartbreak. The emotional impact of his sound is not only heard, but felt, in the bones and in the blood. Themes of longing, desperation, joy and sorrow ring true and genuine from his lips. When Nolan sings, it will make you feel like all of the heartbreak you have ever experienced found a voice and learned how to play guitar. His passion and his energy are contagious and will draw you into his stories.

LOGAN HALSTEAD

“Logan has that mystic quality that every songwriter seeks to harness each time they put pen to paper, and he’s just getting started. ‘Dark Black Coal’ is a striking lamentation on growing up in coal country, and he takes you there.”
– Hippies and Cowboys Podcast

“A talented lyricist whose song content authentically revolves around his experiences growing up and living in the heart of Appalachia, Halstead is one of the driving forces in the scene of young artists hailing from the Appalachian region.”

“There’s a starkness and a wisdom in this guy’s voice that is way beyond his years. ”

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred
Nov 29 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
