KC and the Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced
into the music scene 50 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey—KC for short—developed a unique
fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string
of hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s The Way (I Like It)” and “Shake Your Booty.” With
sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an
American Music Award, KC and the Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of
the 70s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music. Today, KC and the
Sunshine Band play over 100 live shows annually, circling the country and playing dates
regularly throughout Europe, Australia and South America. This year KC will celebrate 50 years
of entertaining us, writing songs, and performing around the world and has no intention of
stopping.
In the last decade KC has continued to influence the dance and disco scene by releasing new
music, most recently his single, “Unconditional Love featuring Bimbo Jones.” In March of 2015
KC and the Sunshine Band released, “Feeling You! The 60s.” The album was a tribute to the era
that shaped KC into the revolutionary artist he became in the 70s. Covers on the album include
songs by sixties legends Bob Dylan, Ben E. King, The Kinks, The Righteous Brothers, Jackie
DeShannon, Aaron Neville and many more. Just like the rest of America during that time he was
inspired by the music, innocence, sex, social and political movements and counterculture of the
era, which led to him founding the Dance Revolution and teaching the world how to boogie.
“The widespread social and political issues of the 1960s was, in part, the inspiration to do
something that would make people forget about their problems and be happy,” said Casey.
“People were looking for something that would divert their attention from the negative aspects of
everyday life surrounding them.”
KC started working in the music business at age 17, performing menial tasks around the T.K.
Records/Studio complex in his hometown of Miami. The Sunshine Band originated in 1973.
Their first record, Blow Your Whistle, made the top 15 on the R&B chart. Their second album,
KC and the Sunshine Band, was released in 1975, went triple platinum and contained the #1 hits
“Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Boogie Shoes” and “Rock Your Baby.” KC
and the Sunshine Band became the first act to score four #1 pop singles in one 12-month period
since the Beatles in 1964. Three of those singles also crossed over to become #1 R&B tracks.
KC’s third album, Part 3, released in 1976, also went triple platinum and contained the #1
singles “I’m Your Boogie Man,” “Shake Your Booty” and “Keep It Comin’ Love.” The band’s
string of hit singles continued with “Boogie Shoes,” which was included on the Saturday Night
Fever soundtrack, “Please Don’t Go” and “Yes, I’m Ready,” a duet with high school friend Teri
DeSario. KC returned to the charts in 1983 with “Give It Up,” which also hit #1 in the UK.
KC’s success in music has earned him an extensive list of accolades including an American
Music Award for Best R&B Artist in 1975 and a songwriting Grammy for Best R&B song for
“Where Is The Love,” which was recorded by Betty Wright. He also received a Grammy Award
for Album of the Year, as well as Producer of the Year in 1978 for his work on the Saturday
Night Fever soundtrack. In 2001, KC was honored with the NARAS Governor’s Award, the
highest honor given by a chapter of the Academy. He received a coveted Star on the Hollywood
Walk of Fame in 2002, where Dick Clark and music producer Michael Lloyd turned out to honor
him. This particular recognition represents the passion that KC has in writing music,
implementing elements of various eras in his songs, proving him to be a passionate, veteran
craftsman. All of these career highlights are chronicled in his book, That’s The Way I Like It –
The Harry Wayne Casey Story, which was published that same year.
KC’s music continues to be a favorite today. His songs have appeared in ads for companies like
General Motors, Burger King, Payless Shoes, Papa John’s Pizza, Old Navy and Nick at Nite. His
music has also been featured in over 200 commercials and movies such as Forrest Gump (“Get
Down Tonight”), Boogie Nights (“Boogie Shoes”), Boys Don’t Cry (“Rock Your Baby”), Rush
Hour (“Get Down Tonight”), Carlito’s Way (“Rock Your Baby,” “Shake Your Booty” and
“That’s The Way I Like It”) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (“Shake Your Booty”). In the
summer of 2003, KC also had a cameo in the feature film The In-Laws starring Michael Douglas
and Albert Brooks.
KC’s songs are regularly heard at sporting events, were featured during Opening Ceremonies of
the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy and he even performed a free concert in Salt Lake
City for the 2002 Winter Olympics. No stranger to the small screen, KC’s songs have been
featured in such shows as Desperate Housewives, Ally McBeal, American Bandstand’s 50th
Anniversary Party and most recently American Idol and Dancing With The Stars with the help of
the USC marching band. Additionally, KC and the Sunshine Band have the distinction of having
made more appearances on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve than any other artist in the
program’s history!
Music acts like White Zombie, Baha Men, Beyoncé and American Idol’s Kelly & Justin have
covered his music. Additionally, KC and the Sunshine Band’s grooves and bass lines have been
sampled in everything from “Rap” by Snoop Dogg to “Trick Daddy to Dance” by Ultra Nate and
many, many more.
You can count on hearing his music on the radio, at a nightclub, at the movies, in a sports arena
or at one of the 100-plus concerts KC and the Sunshine Band plays every year. It is always fun
and truly makes all who hear it happy enough to dance!

JUNE 24-28, 2024 • 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Little kids with BIG imaginations can dance, sing, act, create, and collaborate in this high-energy, low-pressure arts camp! With engaging activities rooted in creative play, kids will have so much fun expressing themselves through the arts, they won’t even notice they’re also building confidence, improving physical and emotional awareness, honing listening and focus skills, and learning to work within a group. At the end of the week, campers will celebrate what they’ve learned in an informal sharing for friends and family.

PERFORMING ARTS CAMP
Rising 1st-2nd Grades
JULY 15-19, 2024 • 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
In this week-long, half-day summer arts camp, students will have fun exploring the fundamentals of acting, music, and movement. Through engaging activities rooted in creative play, kids will make friends, explore the performing arts, discover new tools for expression, and share what they’ve learned in a short performance presented at the end of the week for friends and family.

JULY 8-12, 2024 • 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Kids will have fun exercising their imaginations in this week-long camp exploring the creative arts! With daily activities in acting, dance, music, design, technical theatre, and more, this high-energy, low-pressure camp builds life skills, confidence, and friendships through the arts. Kids will leave feeling empowered to take creative risks on stage and off.

PERFORMING ARTS CAMPS
Rising 3rd-5th Grades
JULY 22-26, 2024 • 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Kids can connect with other creative thinkers as they write, develop, and perform in their own original show! With an emphasis on self-expression, collaboration, and the creative process, kids will have fun exploring daily activities in acting, movement, creative writing, and improvisation in a low-pressure, supportive environment. At the end of the week, young artists will share their newfound skills in an informal performance for family and friends. No prior performing arts experience is necessary, only an open mind.

Join us for the 48th annual Clean Streams Day, to celebrate the birthday of local author and environmental advocate Wilma Dykeman and to honor her legacy and contributions to the French Broad watershed.
We will paddle an in-town section of the French Broad from Amboy Rd to 704 Riverside Drive, removing litter and enjoying the river. All gear including kayaks, canoes, life vests, and cleanup supplies will be provided.
A shuttle will be provided from the takeout to the afterparty at Wrong Way Campground for food and beverages.
Volunteers must be 13 or older for river cleanups.

Need to know
Park: Please do not park at Wrong Way Campground or Cultivate Climbing. There are small lots along Amboy Road and parking at Carrier Park that can easily be walked to and from. Look for GreenWorks near the Amboy Road River Park put-in across from Cultivate.
Clothing: lightweight clothing – bathing suits, shirts, tshirts/ tank tops, quickdry materials – no heavy materials like jeans. No heavy footwear or flip flops – old sneakers or water shoes are best. Sun protection and other personal items as needed. We’ll have some dry bags for keys and valuables, but most of those items should be left in vehicles or at home.
Eat a good breakfast or snack before you arrive – we will have food and drinks to celebrate with after the cleanup. You may also want to bring a towel and change of clothes/shoes for afterwards.

Bootleg Biology and Riverbend Malt House are excited to bring this festival to Asheville in its second year. This celebration of Southern terroir will cap Asheville Beer Week, and draw craft brewers from across the region to Asheville for the festivities. Open to interpretation, “Southern Lager” tends to be a cold-fermented, dry-finishing, lower-ABV beer that pairs well with sweltering heat. Taste more than 20 expressions of Southern Lager made with Riverbend malt and fermented with Bootleg Biology yeast at the 2nd annual Southern Lager Festival on Saturday, May 25 at The Mule from 5 to 9pm. Tickets are available now for our upcoming fundraising concert, “A Salute to Our Summer Season” happening THIS SATURDAY, May 25th at 7pm! This concert will feature two regional crowd-pleasers, The Gypsy River Band and The Dwayne Melton Band. Formed in 2021, The Gypsy River Band’s dynamic and familiar sound will satisfy any listener with its blend of southern rock, blues, and country music. This five-piece band is composed of Robert Bryant (lead guitar, vocals), Billy Sprouse (piano, guitar, vocals), Nick Rash (lead vocals, guitar), Faron Silvers (Bass, vocals), and Derick Graybeal (Drums). They have played regionally since their inception and have become a favorite among locals and visitors of the mountains. The Dwayne Melton Band is a mixture of great classic rock songs, ranging from the 1950s to the 1980s, playing the biggest hits from that era. Dwayne Melton (the bandleader) is a veteran on the club circuit and plays with such bands as the Krystal Image and also plays backup for “The Johnny Cash Tribute Show.” The other members of the band are John Tippton (drums and vocal); Tim Hensley (guitar and vocal); and Barbar Hoffman (lead vocalist) and they’re sure to bring you back to the era of great classic songs. |

With over a hundred million albums sold and countless hits, CSN&Y songs have defined the music of a generation that still resonates today. Harvest Moon features four-part vocal harmonies and an intuitive feel for the music and vibe of Neil and CSN&Y, giving heart and soul to a lifetime of songs.
Harvest Moon was formed in 2018 by seasoned Atlanta music scene veterans to pay tribute to the legendary careers of Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Rod Gunther started the band on guitar and Henry Davis on keyboards. Brad Berry, of Reuben’s Bell and a long-time anchor of the Metalsome events, is on drums/vocals. Wade Carreker on bass/vocals and Meg Scalise on vocals bring their many years of performance and incredible talents to the band. On guitar and vocals is Grant Reynolds, a first-call Atlanta guitarist, vocalist, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, and on pedal steel guitar is Mark van Allen, a nationally acclaimed session and touring musician. Mark has appeared on hundreds of recordings and has toured with Sugarland, Jimmy Herring, and many others, along with being a founding member of Blueground Undergrass.

Organizing a litter cleanup with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, or other community members is easier than you may think! Asheville GreenWorks provides cleanup supplies and safety information, and will coordinate trash pick up as needed. Available supplies include safety vests, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, and SHARPs containers (upon request).
