Kitchen Dwellers
Ages 18+
The Infamous Stringdusters rise to new heights on their ninth full-length record Rise Sun. For the album, the GRAMMY® Award-winning quintet-Andy Falco [guitar], Chris Pandolfi [banjo], Andy Hall [dobro], Jeremy Garrett [fiddle], and Travis Book [double bass]-expanded their signature sound by perfecting their seamless fusion of All-American-bluegrass and rock.
Once again sail into uncharted territory moored only by their expressive patchwork of All-American bluegrass threaded together with strands of rock, jazz, funk, country, old-time, and more.
As they approached this latest body of work, the group’s ambition matched their outsized creative curiosity. “Rise Sun was sparked by the feeling of wanting something better for the world-more love, more awareness, and more compassion,” says Hall. “It’s a message of taking care of each other, our planet, and ourselves. We all shared this feeling as evidenced by the songs we brought to the project. It’s the feeling of a rising sun as opposed to a dark night. Sometimes a message of hope is less popular than one of despair, but it’s much-needed nevertheless.”

Shop at Barnes & Noble Asheville and Support Students in Buncombe County
Starting November 1st and running through December 31st, Barnes & Noble Booksellers at the Asheville Mall is hosting a book drive so customers can easily donate books to local middle school youth. It’s such a simple and needed way to support local students. You can simply purchase the books while doing your holiday shopping, leave them with your cashier at check-out, then we will collect the books at the end of the month and distribute them to commmunity partners and students throughout Asheville and Buncombe County.
You can also drop off new, unwrapped books at our office located on 50 South French Broad Avenue in Asheville. If you do, please drop them off by December 10 so we can wrap them up for distribution.

Since 2010 master scientific glass blower, Jason Probstein has been presenting live glassblowing demonstrations here at our art gallery.
And once again we are proud to announce that Jason will be blowing his unique Christmas ornaments and glass artworks here at Mountain Made gallery from now to December 23rd, 2019.
Jason will be demonstrating Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. He will also be blowing glass every Sunday from Noon to 2:00 PM.

A music and poetry fusion project
In celebration of its 20th season, Pan Harmonia commissioned a brand-new work for mezzo soprano, flute, guitar and bassoon.
Rubble Becomes Art, three art songs about healing, reconciliation, and transformation, features the music of composer Dosia McKay with poetry by North Carolina writers Sally Atkins, Valerie Foote and Cathy Larson Sky and delves into contemporary themes of inclusion and exclusion relevant to today’s world.

Guitarist Jimmy Herring is no stranger to adventurous new environs: The North Carolina native has fearlessly honed his now-formidable technique via stints with some of the giants of improvised music — from his earliest days in the van with Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit to high profile gigs with the Allman Brothers, The Dead, Project Z, Phil Lesh and Friends, and his ongoing role as lead guitarist in Widespread Panic. He recently collaborated with iconic guitarist John McLaughlin when Herring’s band The Invisible Whip joined McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension for an acclaimed run of shows celebrating the legacy of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. You might have heard about the need to recruit more foster parents in Buncombe County. “We currently have 300 kids in foster care in Buncombe County,” says Heather Hill-Pavone, Buncombe County Licensing Social Worker. “Only some of those kids get to stay in Buncombe County as we only have 100 licensed foster homes with BCHHS.” We need your help to let people in our community know about the upcoming Foster Parent Training Classes happening in 2020!
These courses begin the licensure process for becoming a foster parent. They are offered quarterly, for anyone in Buncombe County, who is interested in becoming a foster parent. While the next round of Foster Parent Training Classes starts on September 11, the classes for 2020 are NOW on the calendar! You can sign up by clicking this link.

Discovery Day: The UNC Asheville Open House takes place on Saturday, Nov. 9, giving college-bound students and their families a chance to talk with current students, meet one-on-one with faculty and staff, tour campus and discuss academic programs, financial aid, scholarships and the application process. Learn more about and register for Discovery Day on the Admission Office website. UNC Asheville is among the nation’s top public liberal arts universities – tied for eighth in the U.S. News & World Report’s “2020 Best Colleges” rankings and included on U.S. News’ Most Innovative Schools list. For those unable to attend Discovery Day, individual and group tours are also available for prospective students and their families.
You adult child won’t speak to you? Find support through our weekly meetings, every Saturday, Sept. 7 – Nov. 9, 2019, 8:30 am to 9:45 am, at First Congregational Church Library, 1735 Fifth Avenue West. It’s not about who’s right or wrong. It’s about getting on with life.
The community is invited to attend Voter ID Public Seminars. Beginning in 2020, voters will be required to provide photo identification before they vote. This includes both in-person and by-mail voting, with some exceptions. The Buncombe County Board of Elections is teaming up with the libraries to hold educational seminars about voter photo identification requirements. The seminars are free and open to the public.

The North Carolina Room at Pack Memorial Library and the Buncombe County Community Engagement Team will host two “History Harvests” as part of the Black Asheville History Project, a community led project to gather and preserve the stories and artifacts of Asheville and Buncombe County’s African American history.
Bring your personal collections for on-the-spot preservation and digitization. Materials such as scrapbooks, photos, letters, diaries, business papers and more will be scanned or photographed by library staff or volunteers and returned to you. History Harvests are a way to celebrate, share, and preserve African American community history for generations to come.
Please join us on Saturday November 9 or Saturday November 23 from 1-5pm. The events will be held on the lower floor of Pack Memorial Library, 67 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville, next to the Civic Center. Light refreshments will be served.
Join other community members to share stories in an “Ask your Elders” round table from 1-2 pm. Scanning will be done 2-5pm. Participants will leave with all of their items, plus a flash drive with digital copies of the material they donated to the harvest.

The matinee performance will feature an all-American program including Sousa marches, ragtime, favorites from the Great American Songbook, American folk music, Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
Weiser has a Doctorate in Piano/Chamber Music from the Peabody Conservatory, where he studied with Samuel Sanders and Robert MacDonald and won the Richard Franko Goldman prize for outstanding contribution to musical and education life. He has performed on many great stages, including the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and on the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago.
Vanessa Collier received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philadelphia Blues Society in July at the Briggs Farm Blues Festival.
Collier recently returned from a tour of Spain and Switzerland throughout the first part of October, after performing at the huge, three-day Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas this past September.
The young musician has risen quickly in the eyes of her peers, winning “Best Horn – Instrumentalist” at the 2019 (40th Annual) Blues Music Awards, the equivalent of the ‘Blues Grammys,’ this past May.
Join us at the final event in our year-long celebration of Fairview Library’s 20th Anniversary year. This special evening will be filled with performances by David Holt and Zoe & Cloyd, and MC-d by Fairview’s own Becky and Pat Stone. Hailing from opposite ends of the Appalachian mountains, Zoe & Cloyd is renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Their show is as diverse as their upbringing: coming from a lineage of klezmer and jazz musicians, Natalya trained classically in her home state of Massachusetts before moving south in 2004. John, a twelfth generation North Carolinian and grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler, Jim Shumate, is a 1st place winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest as well as an Artist Fellowship recipient for songwriting from the North Carolina Arts Council.
Four-time Grammy Award winner David Holt is a musician, storyteller, historian, television host and entertainer, dedicated to performing and preserving traditional American music and stories. Holt plays ten acoustic instruments and has released numerous award winning recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales.

The song has achieved Gold status in the United States, Canada and Norway and is Platinum in Australia. Her debut EP, Make My Bed, marked the first release for Mark Ronson’s Zelig Records and was released to critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Complex, Refinery29, Billboard, Highsnobiety, Interview and Vogue among others. Since, King Princess has graced the covers of V Magazine, The Ingenue, Jalouse and The Travel Almanac. She’s played sold out shows across North America and Europe with festival debuts at Coachella, Glastonbury, Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Boston Calling and many more. Blessing of our Animal Companions
Animals are invited to join and bring their people to Crystal Visions, Saturday, November 9th, 2019 from 10-12pm for a ‘Blessing of our Animals’ event. Crystal Visions is located at 5426 Asheville Hwy, Hendersonville, NC 28791. Free. Join the Pet Honoring Movement.
All creatures, great and small and their human companions are invited. Our pets give us so much…let’s honor them! Oh yes! This is an all faith, non-denominational event. Love is love. Join us for this wonderful event honoring our loving animal companions.
Join officiating member Rev. L. Leigh Love and Rose Proud as they bring in the awesome energy of St. Francis of Assisi for a symbolic, healing and loving blessing of your animals. Bring your well-behaved and leashed/crated pets, or their photos (if they cannot attend), to this wonderful service devoted to your fur-loves who have opened your heart and enhanced your life.
The service will include a group as well as individual animal blessings. Unite with families, canines, and other creatures great and small, for the special opportunity to have your pets blessed. A Pet Memorial Wall is available to post pictures of your departed pets. These pets will be blessed in this event as well as Sunday at the Second Sunday Pet Honoring Memorial Service at Bright Star Studio.
Event is Rain or Shine! If the weather is good, the event will take place outdoors. If inclement weather, it will be held on the side porch. This is a way of serving the community and extending love, honor and importance to our animal family. Together we can share in the task of being good stewards of creation and those creatures entrusted to our care.
