During this visit you will have the opportunity to see the crops that are growing and hear from Utopian Seed Project Executive Director and Founder Chris Smith about his vision for an engaged community of growers, gardeners, farmers, foodies, cooks, chefs and everyone who embraces regional biodiversity and believe in a resilient, delicious and equitable food and farming system. This outing is Part 2 of a 2-part series, with a Virtual Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, September 19 at 12:00 p.m. You are not required to sign up for both, but it is recommended. Register separately for the virtual introductory program HERE. Our Community Farm is a 140-acre educational and working farm just outside Asheville. The farm is a continually evolving home for conservation projects and agricultural production. Highlighted by our stream restoration project, shortleaf pine reforestation project, farm incubator program, silvopasture project, and education center, there is always something new to see. Participants can hike The Discovery Trail in a 2.5-mile loop allowing us to view all of the amazing farm projects before returning to the parking area. Or you can just visit the first part of the tour and return to the parking lot. The walk from the parking lot to the farm plot is about 10-15 minutes on a relatively flat trail. Participants are welcome to bring snacks and water to enjoy as we venture across the farm property. Please note that our Community Farm is an active farm not open to the public unless accompanied by SAHC staff. To ensure safety, staff capacity, and a positive experience for everyone involved it is critical that ALL hike participants pre-register for events before visiting the farm. You will receive an email with specific information about where to meet on the farm and other necessary details. If you do not receive this email, as well as a confirmation email following your registration, we do not have you registered for the hike. The majority of this hike is not disability accessible. ASAP (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project) announced 22 farms participating in the 2023 Farm Tour on Sept. 23–24, noon to 5 p.m. These farms showcase the diversity of agriculture in the region, from vegetables to livestock, orchards to homesteads, and are all located within an hour of Asheville. Tourgoers can experience working farms through guided and self-guided tours, demonstrations, interacting with farm animals, u-pick fruit and flowers, local food tastings, and more. The tour is appropriate for attendees of all ages and abilities.

The Farm Tour features four geographic clusters to help visitors maximize their time at farms. Tourgoers should select two to four farms to visit each day, spending around an hour at each. Learn the history of Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley on this walking tour! Museum staff will lead attendees through historic State Street, Cherry Street and Black Mountain Avenue, relaying the history of several buildings and discussing topics including the building of the Swannanoa Tunnel and the disastrous downtown fire of 1912.

Join Chris Parker for a tour of the Forest Farmacy to better understand how to propagate and expand the forest production operation, including a tour of the mushroom spawn and grow rooms. Participants will work on observation and deepening awareness of mushroom and mycorrhizal forest systems and cultivation techniques, specifically how to use wood chip beds and logs for mushroom cultivation.
