Guess Who: A Costume Quest In-person Outdoor
Oct 23 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Asheville Community Theatre

We’re flipping the script on trick or treating this year! Guess Who: A Costume Quest is an outdoor walking tour and interactive game that features costumed actors from past ACT plays and musicals. Guess who’s who, and after you do, there’s a take-home bag of candy and treats for you! This family-friendly night of fun will be held in the parking lots and surrounding grounds of Asheville Community Theatre and the Thomas Wolfe House. Tours will begin at 6:00 pm and start times will be staggered to maintain social distancing.

How will this work? Chanda Calentine explains: “You’ll walk on a path around our building and will encounter 12 different characters along the way. They’ll each share a clue or two about themselves, and you’ll try to guess who they are and which show they’re from. These are recognizable characters from our family friendly shows, and even if you haven’t seen these shows at ACT, we think you’ll still be able to make a good guess! And, at the end of the tour, we’ll have treats for you to take home.

An Evening with Rebecca Folsom CANCELLED
Oct 23 @ 7:00 pm
Isis Music Hall

Rebecca Folsom’s near four-octave range earns her a respectable seat in the same room as vocalists Whitney Houston and Queen’s Freddie Mercury. Add in the soulfulness of Etta James, the abandon of Janis Joplin, a touch of folk songstress Joni Mitchell and that is Rebecca. While her range is impressive, it’s the expression in her voice that rivets your attention and stays with you long after the show ends. Rebecca’s voice pours from an inner source of honest emotion, flowing from lilting tenderness to fully liberated, unbridled release. Her poetic songs open your heart, setting free a vulnerability you didn’t realize was locked away and inviting you to embrace life with all of its joy, sorrow, passion, and love.

Radio Drama Podcast: “Antigone” by UNCA Theatre
Oct 23 @ 7:30 pm
Online

UNC Asheville student Mack Moseley who will star as the voice of Antigone

TheatreUNCA will bring Sophocles’ ancient Greek tragedy Antigone to life as a radio drama podcast with an online debut set for 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18 on the UNC Asheville Department of Drama’s Vimeo channel.  Visit drama.unca.edu/engage/theatreunca to register for this free event and receive a password-protected link to listen to the show between Oct 18 and 25.

This all-student performance will be directed by senior Bri Stewart, and will feature a new translation and adaptation by UNC Asheville students working under Sophie Mills, professor of classics. The play chronicles Antigone’s decision to bury her deceased brother – a former ruler killed in battle against a rival for the throne – despite a decree by the new king that he be neither mourned nor buried.

This production has challenged UNC Asheville’s students to adapt not just the language and themes of the ancient drama, but every aspect of logistics and performance to remain physically distanced while rehearsing and recording.

The cast includes Mack Moseley, Lindsey Wheeler, Thomas Townsend, Maycen Ellis, Brian Badesco, Jada Smith, Sam Pate, Sam McIntosh, Lilly Huebner and Ria Mark.

Oct 24 all-day
Lake Eden

Important Details for LEAF Festival Ticket Holders:

  • Per our ticket policy, as a Non-Profit, LEAF is not able to process refunds. Your understanding is deeply appreciated during this very challenging and unprecedented event. All May Tickets, Vehicle Camping, Cabin Rentals & WeX (Work Exchange) applications will automatically transfer into October 2020 Tickets by 3/31. Yet if this does not work for you, we have 3 options:

    1. Receive Credit for a future event per our credit policy (Note: All standard fees will be waived). Your LEAF Credit will be valid for 3 years, and may be transferred to another person. Email: [email protected] your LEAF credit request.

    2. As a non-profit organization, LEAF Membership is the KEY to supporting over 12,000 youth globally through our Cultural Arts Education programs. Please consider having your ticket purchase go towards becoming a LEAF Member or elevating your current membership. Email: Jordan at [email protected]

    3. Make your ticket into a tax-deductible donation. The loss of the Spring Festival major event will have a tremendous financial impact on the LEAF Global Arts Organization. It is essential for a significant portion of our operations, and unfortunately our longtime secure Rainy Day Fund had to be put into action.  Donations will be key to ensuring the long term sustainability of our organization. LEAF is a non-profit 501c3 organization. Email: Jordan at [email protected]

Important Details for LEAF Festival Ticket Holders:

  • We have adjusted our traditional WeX (formerly Volunteer) Application Policy. We will transfer all current Spring Festival Applications to this year’s Fall Festival. We will reach back out in June to reconfirm schedules and availability. *IF* you are not able to attend this year’s Fall Festival, October 22-25, you may transfer your application fee to either of the 2021 Festivals by emailing [email protected].

When the world settles, we will stay in touch to let you know when the LEAF Global Arts experience will reopen downtown, and when LEAF Schools & Streets classes and workshops are able to resume (the kids and parents will be ready!). LEAF International programs are each following the protocol of their country. In this time of uncertainty, especially for artists, LEAF has taken the extraordinary step of committing to paying hourly LEAF teaching artists and International Culture Keepers, and creating opportunities that they can make up any loss of income during the coronavirus school and center shutdown. In this crucial time, LEAF Membership and Endowment allows us to make this important commitment for the team that is directly working with the youth who are the future Global Citizens. LEAF Teaching Artists and International Culture Keepers are essential in carrying out the mission of LEAF Global Arts in our neighborhood and across the world. Any additional donations to support this commitment are most welcome.

Online

#SelfCareSaturday. Take the time to engage in healing and self-care as a provider, advocate, activist, or survivor is an integral part of your own mental and physical well-being and will help make you an even more powerful advocate for your causes and clients.

Week Without Violence is part of a global movement with YWCAs across the country and around the world to end violence against women and girls. That’s why, for more than 20 years, YWCA has set aside one week in October as a Week Without Violence.

Join us from October 18 – 24, as we hold events nationally and locally, share information and stories, advocate, and more with a common goal in mind: together, we can end gender-based violence.

During this week we will be partnering with Our Voice, Helpmate, Youth Outright, Family Justice Center, and Mountain Child Advocacy to increase awareness of the resources available within our community. Join us on social media by using this profile frame all week long.

The Military’s #MeToo Moment with Lucy C. Del Gaudio, Melissa Bryant, and Lindsay Church

In the wake of the murder of 20-year old Vanessa Guillen, an Army specialist, the military has faced an immense amount of scrutiny in how they investigate gender-based violence. In response to cries for accountability, a group of former members of the armed services have banded together to seek justice for Vanessa and her family to hold the military accountable for their inaction. Lucy C. Del GaudioMelissa Bryant, and Lindsay Church speak with Alejandra Y. Castillo on how they are advocating for Vanessa and providing a new blueprint for proper investigation of gender-based violence reports within the armed services. As calls for transparency and accountability increase, these women are leading the way to achieve justice, and making history along the way.

Please follow along @LadyDelDJ, @mabryant256 @lkmchurch, and contribute to the conversation to demand using the hashtag #JUSTICEFORVANNESSAGUILLEN on Twitter.

Asheville City Extends Outdoor Expansion Program Until January 3
Oct 24 all-day
Online

AVL Shares Space, the City of Asheville’s outdoor expansion program to help businesses add capacity during Covid-19, has been extended until January 3, 2021. AVL Shares Space includes curbside pickup zones throughout downtown, and expansions of private property, public property (sidewalk, on-street parking, parklets). The program has been instrumental for many downtown businesses.
The winter guidelines for temporary outdoor expansion spaces are available here. They include requirements for use of outdoor heaters, sides for tent/shade structures, outdoor lighting and additional maintenance considerations like snow and leaf removal. The guidelines also include staff contact information for questions and a frequently asked question section. City staff has been working directly with the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association (AIR) on this rollout and will continue providing one-on-one support to businesses as-needed.

In addition, the City is providing materials to assist with temporary parklet installation and has partnered with the American Institute of Architects Asheville (AIA) to improve accessibility into these spaces. Businesses owned or managed by people of color are especially encouraged to contact City staff for assistance.

Businesses and organizations can find applications for new temporary outdoor expansion and amend current applications with winterization changes through the City’s Development Portal here.

The public can provide feedback on these initiatives by emailing [email protected] and checking the project page for updates and input opportunities.

The City will make adjustments to the programs as-needed based on public health guidance, and will continue working with businesses and organizations to respond to critical needs, while considering new initiatives for the winter and spring and possible continuation of some opportunities longer term.

Asheville Holiday Parade Canceled for 2020
Oct 24 all-day
Asheville NC

The decision to cancel the parade was based on North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s September 30th announcement moving North Carolina into Phase 3. Phase 3 continues to limit outdoor gatherings to 50 people and provides capacity limits for outdoor spaces. The uncertainty of COVID-19 conditions and public safety protocols in effect at the time of the parade drove the decision.

There are thousands of people in the parade and as many as 20,000 have come to watch in previous years, so it’s just not responsible to move forward in the midst of a public health crisis.

The Asheville Downtown Association took over production of the Asheville Holiday Parade in 2008. The parade first marched, danced and rolled through downtown Asheville in 1946, meaning 2020 would have marked the 74th annual parade.

The Asheville Downtown Association is planning to host free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday, November 21 at Rabbit Rabbit in downtown Asheville. Families will register for a time slot to maintain social distancing, and children and families will also remain distanced from Santa and Mrs. Claus for photos.

The Asheville Downtown Association will also continue to host its annual Downtown Holiday Windows Contest. More information on both of the above opportunities to come.

BOOsters and Pumpkins

The BOOsters are happy little friendly ghosts sold throughout the month of October in area banks, restaurants, cleaners, convenience stores, and many other businesses. For only $1.00, anyone can purchase a BOOster, place his or her name or business card on it and have it displayed. This is a great way to decorate area businesses for the holiday while providing fun, friendly competition, and funds to help continue the outreach of the Eblen Charities.

Eblen Charitable Group Pumpkin Sales: Much like the BOOster sales, these bright paper pumpkins are sold for $1.00 during the month of October in area schools and Ingles Markets. This program sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, Ingle’s Markets, Pepsi, and Clear Channel radio stations benefits the programs of the Eblen Charities  and helps provide a community program to the area schools with the premise of children helping children. Schools also have the opportunity to win prizes and equipment for their school. The school with the most over all sales is awarded the Frank Lewis Memorial Award, named in memory of our long time friend and Buncombe County educator, Frank Lewis.
