Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

WESTERN CAROLINA WRITERS

Here comes the 5th Western Carolina Writers Showcase since the first production in July of 2022!  This showcase features these 9 incredibly talented local singer-songwriters:  Whitney Mongé, Melissa McKinney, Ben Balmer, Jeff Santiago, Tina Collins (Tina & Her Pony), Siena Christie, Steve Taton, Hunter Andrus, and Jim Swayzee.  There will be 3 rounds of 3 performers taking turns playing their original music with occasional spontaneous collaboration creating many magical moments that can only be experienced live.

Western Carolina Writers was established in 2019 by Nick McMahon, along with Jesse Frizsell and Thomas Yon, as a traveling “Songwriters-In-The-Round” style show.  The idea was to take turns performing original songs with fun moments of collaboration at venues all over Western North Carolina.

After about a dozen increasingly successful shows, McMahon started inviting other area songwriters to participate.  And now, after around 150 shows featuring close to 80 different local artists, the concept has become even more popular, fun and diverse.

In 2022, Mcmahon and current project partner, Stephen Evans, decided to take this show into the listening rooms and out of the noisy bars and breweries so the songs could really be heard and appreciated.  With four recent magical & successful songwriter showcases, three at The Grey Eagle and one at Ayurprana Listening Room, this decision has proven to be the right move.

1980s alternative music scene, Athens, GA: Inside/Out is a
critically acclaimed documentary featuring both great and
unknown artists. A special March 11 screening as part of the Music
Movie Mondays series at Grail Movie House will be hosted by
Asheville author and music journalist Bill Kopp.
Lauded as “the definite portrait of the city’s world-renowned music
scene,” Tony Gayton’s 1986 documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out offers
keen insight into the creative center that was and is Athens. Featuring
performance footage and interviews with Athens-based artists well
known (R.E.M., Pylon, The B-52s) and obscure (Time Toy, Bar-B-Q
Killers), the film offers up a portrait of what makes the college town and
its music scene special.
A key center in alternative (also known as “college rock”) music of the
1980s, Athens – home to the University of Georgia – gave rise to a
significant number of new and innovative musical artists during that decade. Gayton’s film is an intimate,
unvarnished portrait of that scene. Drawing not only from the musical personalities but also from other notable
figures in the arts – most memorably folk artist Howard Finster – Athens, GA: Inside/Out helped bring even
more attention to the college town and its diverse music.
First televised on MTV’s The Cutting Edge, the documentary showcased the music of Bar-B-Q Killers, Dreams
So Real, Flat Duo Jets (featuring the recently departed Dex Romweber), Kilkenny Cats, Love Tractor, Pylon,
R.E.M., The Squalls and Time Toy. Screened in a limited 1987 run in theaters in major cities, today Athens,
GA: Inside/Out provides a kind of time capsule of the sights and sounds of a major musical movement.
As part of the Music Movie Mondays series, Grail Moviehouse in Asheville hosts a special one-night-only
showing of the film. Presented by Asheville-based speaker, author and music journalist Bill Kopp, the evening
will include a screening of the film followed by an interactive discussion.
“Going to the movies has always been a kind of
communal experience,” says Kopp, host of Music Movie
Mondays. “Especially in this post-lockdown era, the
opportunity to not only watch a film but then to discuss it
with others is something even more special. And music-
related films lend themselves remarkably well to this shared, interactive experience.”
Music Movie Mondays is a monthly series moderated by Bill Kopp, hosted by Grail
Movie House and sponsored by AshevilleFM. Music Movie Mondays presents a

Joe Bonamassa is one of today’s top live performers. His enthusiastic shows are one of the biggest parts of his career and a favorite for music lovers worldwide. Derina Harvey leads the award-winning ​Celtic Rock group, the Derina Harvey Band (dHb). With a show that offers a fresh take on traditional folk songs as well as a few originals, Derina’s vibrant personality takes center stage with humor, storytelling, and, of course, her powerful vocals. dHb has been ​likened to a “rockier” version of Canada’s Great Big Sea​,​ if fronted by Adele​, and has earned a reputation as a ​high-energy live show​ that leaves many an audience out-of-breath and hollering from their seats!

​dHb has covered a fair amount of Canada via the performing arts and festival circuits and is now poised to do the same in the United States​. They were smash hits at four juried US showcases – Arts Northwest (Best in Showcase Award), Western Arts Alliance, Performing Arts Exchange, Ohio Arts Professionals Network – and following these, the band has quickly begun to make inroads from coast to coast in the US.

The group enjoys a huge wave of online followers from across the globe via TikTok, where there was a sea shanty craze that started in 2020. dHb’s recording of Tom Lewis’s “The Last Shanty” was used in thousands of videos on the platform, introducing the band to a whole new generation of listeners.

Beginning & Intermediate youth music classes on traditional and ol’ time instruments including but not limited to, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar. Students will attend 40 minutes of music enrichment, including multiple flat-footing sessions led by Alice Kexel, story-telling, visits from guest musicians, as well as learn about the heritage of the music and the region. They will have 40 minutes of group music classes, and 40 minutes of singing or JAM rehearsal.

Advanced students will have 40 minutes of group instrument lessons, followed by 30 minutes of advanced singing including harmony and shape-note singing, and finish with 50 minutes of coached, small-ensemble rehearsal.
