Presenter: Bob Gale – Ecologist and Public Lands Director for Mountain True
Invasive plants in the landscape often leave gardeners confused and overwhelmed. Some invasives are smothering our trees and threatening to take over the world, and some are still for sale in garden centers. Bob Gale, Ecologist & Public Lands Director for MountainTrue, will discuss the ecological problems presented by these non-native invasive plants and provide strategies and methods for dealing with them in backyards, gardens, and larger acreages. He will also provide resources for selecting native tree, shrub, and groundcover alternatives.

Join us at Eliada Home’s campus for a small group guided walking Farm Tour. Tours last approximately 1 hour. Participants will learn about outdoor and greenhouse growing practices, aquaponics, hydroponics, market gardening, corn maze production, and learn about our Animal Therapy program.
We will be meeting at the PARC building and walking to the different greenhouses, garden site, and a visit with our animals. Reservations required, tickets are $10 each visitor (to be collected at the time of the tour).
We recommend bringing the following: comfortable shoes for walking on pavement and grass, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. This tour is not handicap accessible and will require participants to climb stairs and walk on uneven ground.
We will begin out tour promptly at the starting time, so please arrive 5-10 min early to allow for parking and check-in. If you are running late or cannot make your tour, please email [email protected] or call #828-348-2287.

PARI’s summer STEM and space camp programming is designed to inspire your young scientist’s curiosity, passion, and confidence to discover something extraordinary. We give campers experiences that encourage deeper thinking and problem solving skills while finding opportunities for comradery, adventure, and fun in the incredible Pisgah Forest region.
Our Mission Control camps provide simulated missions that cover the many topics and skills necessary for a successful exploration of world beyond our own. We’ll use the same kinds of processes that NASA, SpaceX and others use in developing and conducting journeys into space. These missions teach teamwork and STEM principles while giving campers fun and exciting experiences. The camp is an immersive journey amidst our historic campus which played a critical role in the first space race, and will help poise your camper for a role in the next.
Teams will research real technologies and techniques to build and launch a spacecraft, set science and research goals, and ensure everything needed is sent along. They will also need to choose a crew and care for their health and well-being, perform outreach and gain public support, and navigate funding and political challenges.
PARI’s research based camps are aimed at the camper who wants to experience what its like to be a researcher in astronomy, astrophysics, and astrobiology. Scientists and researchers with careers in space science lead this academically challenging curriculum that has been refined for nearly two decades.
Camps begin with an intense first few days of introductions to the instruments, science, and math needed to conduct research. They’ll be guided through choosing a research goal from the menu investigations we believe they can successfully conduct with radio and optical telescopes, and vast archives, provided by PARI and its partners.
The importance of both individual and team based work is emphasized while campers are guided through the research process. They’ll learn to share their progress and conclusions in the same ways expected in journals and at astronomical conferences.

In a week of super adventures, your students will develop their own super-character and weave them into an original performance through a week of drama instruction at the Wortham. With non-stop opportunities to express themselves through arts-based games, activities and field trips, campers will learn life-long skills such as collaboration, communication, self-confidence and leadership. Facilitated by professional arts educators from Bright Star Touring Theatre, students will write their own show and perform it on one of Wortham’s professional stages in an end-of-week showcase for family and friends.

All campers will receive two tickets for each Friday show (3pm and 5pm). The campers stay after the 3pm show for a CAST pizza party between showings, and will go home at the conclusion of the 5pm show on Friday.

Rehearsals for “Henry V” will be from 11am-4pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting July 11, and performances will be July 29-31 and August 5-7.

Note: this is a two-day course which takes place on Saturday, July 23, and Sunday, July 24, 9:30AM-5PM each day.
This is a beginners class for students wanting to learn the skills, exercises, and the fundamentals of mediumship. (Students need to bring a pen and notebook. Printed handouts will be also provided.)
Anthony Mikolojeski will be teaching students the foundation and techniques behind mediumship, and all healing aspects. Students will begin to learn various exercises in how to expand their energy to connect with loved one’s in the spirit world. Students will be engaging in exercises with each other while being mentored by Anthony. They will learn the boundaries, the responsibilities and professional ethics surrounding doing this work.
We will be doing a few singing bowl meditations, practice in meeting spirit guides we haven’t met before and learning techniques on how to build your personal power.
(Because of the summer tourist season and increased high traffic, students will be expected to allow extra traveling time so you arrive promptly for class.) We will start at 9:30 am sharp.

He has completed a mentorship in mediumship with James Van Praagh and advanced mentorship with Mavis Pitilla. Anthony has also studied at the prestigious Arthur Findlay College in Stansted, England, in advanced mediumship.

The southern Appalachians are world-renowned for different types of fungi, from mushrooms to lichens, and is home to more than 2,000 species. Here’s a chance to observe many kinds of fungi at higher elevations and learn how to identify them by size, shape, and color. We’ll take several short hikes and through these field explorations learn about the fungal habitats, toxicology and the important roles fungi play in the forest ecosystem. We will collect representatives of different fungal groups to study in detail. The workshop is designed for beginners, but veterans will also learn something.
Dr. Coleman McCleneghan has taught numerous fungal courses at Appalachian State University, Smoky Mountain Field School (University of Tennessee), and the Great Smoky Mountain Institute at Tremont. She has also led mushroom and lichen walks for the annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in Gatlinburg TN and led forays for the NAMA (North American Mycological Association) including affiliated clubs.

– Discuss the major fungal groups and understand how we study them
– Visit a couple sites to look for mushrooms and other types of fruiting bodies
– Collect a few specimens and examine them closer in the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery
4:00 p.m. Program Concludes at the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery

This Adult Field Course costs $60 for general admission and $51 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club, plus tax. Attendance is limited to 15 participants. Registration opens here May 25. Purchase tickets below. Your program cost includes admission into the park, field instruction, and transportation during your program (you may drive your own vehicle to visit sites on the mountain if you would prefer). It does not include meals or lodging. Bringing a bagged lunch is recommended for most field courses, although Mildred’s Grill will be open to attendees. Tips are not accepted for field courses. However, donations to the Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation are accepted if you would like to recognize a program.
What to Bring?
Much of your time will be spent outdoors and all programs are held rain, snow or shine. You should be prepared for a variety of mountain weather conditions and temperatures. Appropriate clothing, equipment, and footwear are very important. Please bring a daypack with enough room to carry extra clothing (i.e., extra layers, rain gear), water, lunch, camera, binoculars, etc. Also bring a water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, portable chair or pad, field guide/notepad, hand lens and knife for close-up observations, and wax paper or paper bags (with basket or box) to wrap specimens in.
Refunds/Cancelations
The majority of Grandfather Mountain events generally sell out and have a waiting list. If you cannot attend the event that you registered for please let us know. Full refunds will be given to individuals who reach out to us at least five days before the event. This allows time for individuals on the waiting list to make accommodations to attend the event. To cancel your registration please call 828-733-2013 Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. We ask that individuals who are feeling ill stay home to ensure the health and safety of other participants and Grandfather Mountain staff. Refunds will be granted to these individuals.

Registration deadline: July 18
This 4 hour workshop is focused on learning sustainable (and fashionable) ways to repair well-loved clothes. Students will explore the history of mending and its radical meaning today, while working to create functional, beautiful repair work to their own garments. Together we’ll walk through each step of various techniques including darning and weaving on various types of fabric. This class is most closely aligned with American Perspectives and will focus on “making due” in an act of repair work.
Students are required to bring a garment that needs mending.
Instructor Kimberly English is an artist and educator living and working in Asheville, North Carolina. She earned her BFA in Fibers as a Distinguished Scholar from Savannah College of Art and Design, and her MFA in Studio Art from University of North Carolina subsequently. Kimberly’s practice seeks to recontextualize everyday cloth, exploring themes central to the history of the production of cloth, its labor force, and the local impact of a global economy. Her work has been exhibited widely, most recently through Slouch Gallery, Vox Populi, and the Ackland Museum at UNC Chapel Hill.

The Museum’s studio program for adults offers a core curriculum in drawing, painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional media, and also explores the intersections between them. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes.
