“Joyful Light” runs from December 1-31 during gallery hours, 11am-6pm, and features works by numerous artists in a variety of mediums.  A gathering to meet the artists will be held on First Friday, December 3 from 5-8pm at the gallery at 82 Patton Avenue.  Please join us during this special time of year to view the wonderful medley of offerings!

Raquel Egosi – “Terpsichore”, Acrylic

Patricia Veatch – “Merry Berry”, Oil

“Christmas has always been my favorite time of year.  I love Christmas most of all for the opportunity to be with family and share our traditions.  After a very isolated zoom Christmas last year, our family is going to celebrate with gusto!”

Robin Altman – “Mountain Sunflower”, Acrylic

Asheville City Council: virtual meeting
Dec 14 @ 5:00 pm
online
City Council meeting modified graphic

For safety and to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, Asheville City Council meetings remain in remote format and accessible to the public in accordance with N.C. General Statute § 166A-19.24(f). This includes the 5 p.m. December 14 City Council meeting.

Here’s what you need to know to watch/listen and/or to participate in this meeting, which can be accessed through the City’s Virtual Engagement Hub.

The agenda is posted at this link.

To watch: You can watch the meeting live through the City’s Virtual Engagement Hub or via the City’s YouTube channel.

By phone: Listen live by calling 855-925-2801, then enter code 5657.

Public comment

Because the upcoming City Council meeting will be a remote participation meeting, and to allow staff time to assist community members in preparing for such a meeting format, persons wishing to speak during the meeting must sign up in advance using this online form, ashevillenc.gov/comments, or call the Clerk’s office at 828-259-5900 no later than 9 a.m. December 14 to add their names to the list of speakers.

Each speaker will need to listen to the meeting through the live phone application by calling 855-925-2801, meeting code 5657. Callers who have signed up to speak should press “*” and then “3” to join the speaker queue during the meeting. To best ensure staff can support you in the case of technical difficulties, we ask that you join the queue no later than the beginning of the agenda item before the agenda item on which you have signed up to speak.

Additionally, if you have joined the speaker queue and need to disconnect before your time to speak, please hit *4 before hanging up. You can then call back in using the same directions listed above and staff will enter you back into the speaker queue if 1) you signed up to speak for the agenda item and 2) public comment is still being accepted for the agenda item.  Each speaker is allotted 3 minutes to speak for up to one hour for each agenda item. The Mayor or presiding officer may, at his/her discretion, increase or decrease this time allocation depending on the number of speakers.

To leave pre-recorded voicemail comments for the agenda (including public hearings) by calling 855-925-2801, enter code 5657.  The deadline to sign up for pre-recorded voicemail comments is 9 a.m. December 14.

Email: Please submit written comments for the agenda (including public hearings) by emailing [email protected] (*If your email message includes an attachment, please send to this address: [email protected] and also copy [email protected]).

These remote format City Council meetings are a temporary measure for the health and safety of everyone, as we collectively work through social distancing techniques to prevent the spread of COVID-19, taking into consideration guidance from the CDC, N.C. Department of Health and Human Service and Buncombe County Health and Human Services.

The top priorities are the safety of our community and to slow the spread of COVID-19.

We continue to coordinate City response with Buncombe County, which extended the indoor mask mandate through Jan. 5, and State officials. These actions are all designed with public health in mind, as we pull together to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

VIRTUAL MEETING: Asheville Women in Tech

Hey Asheville women! Are you a coder, a developer, a designer, an architect of information? This is a group for Asheville women in tech who want a collaborative and supportive space to bring projects to workshops, participate in tutorials facilitated by other members, spark new ideas, write practice code, and develop cool stuff. Maybe (like me) you’re just getting started, and you wish you could bounce ideas off someone, or just ask them how to center that block of text on the page? You should come! We’ll work it out together. Or maybe you’re a veteran web developer who thinks rookies are brave (possibly foolish) souls with no idea what they’re getting into? Please come tell us all the things you wish someone had told you! Let’s skill-share, meet other women in the biz, learn new things, and give each other a leg up!

We’re on Slack!

Miracle Mongers and Their Methods – the American Medicine Show with Larry Bounds (Virtual Talk on Zoom)
Dec 14 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
online

Miracle Mongers and Their Methods – the American Medicine Show presented by Larry Bounds

In 1920 Houdini published a complete exposé of the modus operandi of fire eaters, heat resisters, poison eaters, venomous reptile defiers, sword swallowers, human ostriches, strong men, etc.  And to quote Houdini: “No performer should attempt to bite off red-hot iron unless he has a good set of teeth.”

Who better to bring this 1920 classic up-to-date than Greenville Chautauqua’s own Larry Bounds? By the way, you will be able to catch Larry onstage as Houdini at the 2022 Chautauqua Festival scheduled for June 10 – 19, 2022.

This event is not a magic show or a performance (although there is always something magical when Larry is on camera.)

REGISTER FOR MIRACLE MONGERS

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing additional information about joining the meeting. If this is the first time you have attended a Zoom event, you may be directed to download the Zoom app. You do NOT need a Zoom account to attend. If when you register you click on “add to your calendar,” you will have all the information you need to join the event on your calendar.

The event will feature audience Q/A. Everyone who has registered for the event will receive an email with a link to a recording of the  presentation that will be available for two weeks only.

There are musicians who call themselves road warriors, and then there’s Anderson East. An unflinching, inimitable talent armed with a potent and husky voice, the gritty-blues and-soul-toasting singer has spent the past two years pounding the pavement in the wake of his breakout debut album, 2015’s Delilah. It was only fitting then that whatever came next for East would bleed with an intimate and urgent sense of immediacy. “We wanted to present every song as a true performance,” the musician says of the stunning and diverse 11 tracks that comprise Encore, the Alabama native’s forthcoming new album due January 12 via Low Country Sound/Elektra Records.
