Art in Bloom

Celebrate nature and art with us during our 16th annual Art in Bloom!

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts has held Art in Bloom for 14 consecutive years (take that, COVID-19!). This is a two-month long event that features 2 gallery exhibits, a gala, a local garden tour, a 2-day  live floral arrangement exhibit, and live plein air painters in local gardens.

This year marks the 16th Annual Art in Bloom, our most anticipated fundraiser of the year. This multi-faceted event celebrating nature and art combines two gallery exhibits, live floral arrangements, local garden tours featuring working artists, and floral-inspired workshops. Whether you join us for one event or all of them, you are playing an important role in supporting the arts in our community.

Schedule of Events

June 15 – July 6 • 10am-5pm, Monday-Friday • Regional Galleries Exhibit

In the weeks leading up to Art in Bloom, our gallery will feature selected pieces from regional galleries. The works featured will be inspiration for the arrangements created by talented regional floral designers.

July 7 • 5-7pm • Art in Bloom Preview Party

We know how to throw a party! Be among the first to see the floral interpretations at their freshest and meet the floral designers. We’ll kick off Art in Bloom with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and live music. This is a night you won’t want to miss.

July 8 & 9 • 10am-4pm • Tour the Gallery & Floral Arrangements

Visit the gallery to experience the stunning creativity of our Ikebana and Western floral designers who have created arrangements inspired by the artworks in the show. The flowers will only be on display for 2 days, so don’t miss your chance to see nature imitating art!

July 8 & 9 • 10am-2pm • Local Garden Tour & Plein Air Artists

Our self-guided garden tour features a diverse array of inspiring local gardens. Look for plein air artists creating in each garden! Your Garden Tour Ticket includes a map and directions to each garden and access to our main gallery for the Art in Bloom exhibit.

July 13 – 29 • 10am-5pm, Monday-Friday • Art from the Garden Exhibit

Return to BMCA after Art in Bloom to view the works created during the Garden Tour by the plein air artists. This beautiful show is free and open to the public.

Art in Bloom is a unique exhibition that also serves as a fundraiser for the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. Every ticket you purchase supports local artists, programming, and creative opportunities in Western North Carolina.

ArborEvenings

The North Carolina Arboretum

Sip and stroll through the Arboretum’s gardens in the glow of the golden hour, all while listening to live music from a variety of local and regional artists! ArborEvenings runs Thursdays and most Fridays through September 30, 2022 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

There is no additional cost to attend ArborEvenings beyond our standard parking fee. As always, Arboretum Society members and their accompanying guests can enter for FREE (guests must be in member vehicles to receive free entry). Proceeds from ArborEvenings help support the The North Carolina Arboretum Society and further advance the Arboretum’s mission.

Beverage Service

Beer, Wine, and soft drinks will be for sale onsite at the Green Gardener’s Shed from 5:30 to 8:15 p.m. each night of the event. Outside alcohol is strictly prohibited, but guests are welcome to bring in water or a favorite non-alcoholic beverage.

Food Available for Pre-Order, Picnics Welcome

Although the Bent Creek Bistro will not be open during the event, they will be offering their delicious dining options at ArborEvenings via pre-order! Simply place your online order — including alcoholic beverages — up until 11 a.m. on the date you plan to attend, then pick up your order at the Baker Information Desk between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. (In the event of rain cancellation, pre-orders will be fully refunded.)

Guests are welcome to bring in outside food and non-alcoholic beverages. However, outside alcohol is strictly prohibited.

Please note: ArborEvenings will not be held in the event of rain. Please check the website or Facebook page by 3 p.m. for any cancellation announcements prior to attending.

Developed by Fairies and dedicated volunteers, Bullington Gardens’ Fairy Trail is a whimsical treat for the young and the young at heart. Featuring charming vignettes and villages, the fairy trail will charm you with its thoughtful design, eye catching displays and secret woodland trail.

Rules of the trail:

Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.

Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.

Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.

Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.

The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.

Eliada Home guided walking Farm Tour

Join us at Eliada Home’s campus for a small group guided walking Farm Tour. Tours last approximately 1 hour. Participants will learn about outdoor and greenhouse growing practices, aquaponics, hydroponics, market gardening, corn maze production, and learn about our Animal Therapy program.

We will be meeting at the PARC building and walking to the different greenhouses, garden site, and a visit with our animals. Reservations required, tickets are $10 each visitor (to be collected at the time of the tour).

We recommend bringing the following: comfortable shoes for walking on pavement and grass, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.  This tour is not handicap accessible and will require participants to climb stairs and walk on uneven ground.

We will begin out tour promptly at the starting time, so please arrive 5-10 min early to allow for parking and check-in. If you are running late or cannot make your tour, please email [email protected] or call #828-348-2287.

All proceeds from ticket sales from your farm tour go directly back to helping the Campus Farm Program grow more food for the children of Eliada!

Each year, Asheville GreenWorks plants more than 1,000 trees as part of our commitment to restore Asheville’s tree canopy. However, we can’t do it without the help of our volunteers. Each year hundreds of tree lovers dedicate a day (or more) to potting, planting, or caring for the saplings that will keep urban Asheville cool and green now and in the future.

 

You are welcome to schedule a specific workday for your group or to join one of our public workdays every Tuesday from April to July from 10am-12pm.

Thinking ahead never does anyone harm! Planning your fall garden can be a little daunting, especially with time frames, seeding, and what crops can stand in the late summer heat. Diana McCall will share some frameworks to consider fall gardening, including timelines, cover cropping, and favorite fall crops. Diana taught the OGS Gardening Series for many years and managed the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden, where the workshop will take place.

Invasive Plant Walk + Talk

Oklawaha Greenway at Patton Park

The Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway invite the public to join them for an invasive plant walk along the Oklawaha Greenway on Wednesday, July 13th, from 9:30 – 11:30 (rain date July 20th). MountainTrue Botanist/Ecologist Bob Gale will lead the walk. Gale will stop along the way to point out unwanted invasive plants so participants can learn how to identify them. He will give tips on maintenance and removal, and explain why these non-native plants are a nuisance to the natural environment, as well as the home landscape. See registration link below.

 

The walk will begin at 9:30 at Patton Park, 1730 Asheville Hwy in Hendersonville. near the round gazebo and skateboard park. The slow amble will feature stops along the way to look at a recent live-staking project, part of a streambank restoration in Patton Park. Gale will stop at a non-native invasive plant removal site, to see the progress, and walk the newly reinforced boardwalk into the swamp, a favorite spot for birdwatching. A short distance away, at the red kiosk on the greenway, the group will stop to admire the new native plant garden, established in the memory of Wes Burlingame.

Developed by Fairies and dedicated volunteers, Bullington Gardens’ Fairy Trail is a whimsical treat for the young and the young at heart. Featuring charming vignettes and villages, the fairy trail will charm you with its thoughtful design, eye catching displays and secret woodland trail.

Rules of the trail:

Do not move or rearrange fairy displays. The fairies are very fond of their own decorating.

Do not leave trash on the trail. Fairies do not like litter in their town.

Please ensure children and pets are supervised at all times. Dogs and loud noises can scare the fairies into hiding.

Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation. The fairies depend on the vegetation to build their homes.

The trail is one way only. Please stay on the trail at all times.
