The number one requested musical from our 2019 show survey: you asked for it, you got it! From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the ‘American’ Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of fear, violence, and prejudice remains one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching, and relevant musical dramas of our time. With a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is widely regarded as among the best musicals ever written.

Since 2017, Apple Country String Band (ACSB) has been playing Americana music around Hendersonville, NC. Mixing folk, blues, country, rock and bluegrass the group of veteran musicians play music people like to hear on acoustic stringed instruments.
“We don’t get together every week to learn hard songs,” says founding band member Steve Pettis. “We like to identify songs that we really enjoy, can learn really quickly and that we think people will know. Our repertoire consists of over 200 songs. Like Tom Petty once said, ‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus!’ ”
Steve Pettis moved to the area from Athens, GA where he formed and played with the Red Oak Southern String Band for 10 years. One day after moving to Hendersonville, Steve ran into fellow musician and friend Chris Price. The two played together previously in Athens back in 2003 with a local cowboy group. After reuniting, the two immediately started jamming and it was not long before they were appearing as ACSB. Now the band consists of up to 7 members including Bruce ‘Boomer’ Stowe on bass, Joe Alexander on banjo, Charlotte Dillard on fiddle, Jim ‘The Bee Man’ Poe on guitar and Bryan ‘B2’ Byrd on percussion and vocals. The group recorded tracks for the recent documentary ‘Moonshine in the Mountains’ produced by the Center of Cultural Preservation. ACSB performs regularly at local farmers markets and other venues.
This free series of concerts takes place on the east side of the lake, behind the Technology, Education and Development Center.

Redd was a participant on Season 19 of American Idol, placing in top 40, and she recently quit teaching high school English to pursue music full time with the band.
Will is a full time student at University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the jazz program for upright bass, and Gavin is a mandolin aficionado who works at a local music shop helping musicians realize their potential.

John Ford is a traveling blues singer songwriter from Cincinnati, and regularly performs in places like St. Louis, Mobile, Alabama and Clarksdale, Mississippi. He has shared the stage with the likes of Cedric Burnside and Ruthie Foster. In 2012 he recorded in Room 414 of the Gunter Hotel, in San Antonio, Texas — the same room where Robert Johnson recorded such epic songs as “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Crossroad Blues”, back in 1936.
It’s pre-war blues, country blues…..downhome blues and the STORY behind the music.

Jesse Daniel Edwards is an acclaimed songwriter hailing from the small mountain town of Cuyamaca, CA (pop. 60). As a child, Jesse and his 6 siblings grew up without television, internet, or significant exposure to the outside world. He spent his time learning to sing harmony to gospel tracks and tinkering on hand-me-down instruments with his grandpa. Leaving home at 16, he spent his late teen years busking on street corners around the US and abroad. He eventually grew to perform upon the festival and university circuits full-time after a chance encounter with Al Bunetta (Oh Boy Records), sharing the stage with Morrissey, Lucinda Williams, and John Prine. His songs have been featured in radio, TV, streaming movies, video games, and film.
