‘Deck the Trees’ Fundraiser
Dec 21 all-day
Swannanoa Valley

From now until January 2, more than 40 beautiful Christmas trees will be on display at shops and businesses throughout the Swannanoa Valley, as part of the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry (SVCM) ‘Deck the Trees’ fundraiser. The largest display will be at the Monte Vista Hotel, 308 West State Street, in Black Mountain. The trees have been creatively decorated by individuals, organizations and businesses in the community, around this year’s theme, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Each tree has a collection box beside it, and you can “vote” for your favorite trees by placing money or a check in the box.

All proceeds from Deck the Trees benefit the SVCM Fuel Fund. With the rising cost of electricity, oil, natural gas, propane and wood, many of our neighbors can’t afford to heat their homes during the cold winter months, and the Fuel Fund is there to help. Since its inception in 2011, Deck the Trees has raised more than $250,000 for the fuel fund. Participating in this annual fundraiser is a way to give back to the community, while enjoying a beautiful holiday display.

To visit the trees in person, look for a Deck the Trees logo in the windows of participating stores and businesses. You can also download a list of tree locations, or see photos of the trees and vote online, at svcmblackmountain.org/deckthetrees.

his year, the keynote speaker is Atlanta Braves’ legendary pitching coach Leo Mazzone.  Whatever advance coverage you can provide is much appreciated, as UNCA baseball has a limited operational budget which needs the revenues created through ticket sales to this important event.  Thanks so much for your consideration.  Here’s a quick bio on Leo:

  • Member of the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame

  • Member of the 1995 World Series Champions and a Braves team that won 14 consecutive division titles.

  • ESPN.com lists him No. 1 on its list of “Top 10 Assistant Coaches of All-Time”

  • He worked for the Braves’ organization for 26 years (1979-2005)

  • Coached future Baseball Hall of Fame starting pitchers Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz–all were Cy Young Award winners as well–on a starting pitching rotation that was ranked No. 1 (1998) and No. 4 (1993) all-time by ESPN.

  • Mazzone’s “accidental trademark” was his rocking back and forth while sitting in the dugout. On television broadcasts of Braves games, the camera would often show him rocking back and forth during the game.

Impending Joy Album Release Show with Tongues of Fire and Rob Robinson
Feb 2 @ 8:00 pm
Eulogy

Impending Joy

The absolutely unfettered energy of Asheville’s psych/garage band Impending Joy begs to be heard live. The driving surf punk-esque sound has to be enjoyed communally. It has the unifying spirit that solidifies what it means to be young or young at heart. It gleefully slams the point home, it rocks no matter what sub-genre you want to call it, somewhere between Surf Curse and OSEES is close enough. Impending Joy’s debut, self titled album is a journey through time carrying a twinge of nostalgic familiarity. The album is a collection of tracks that invites the listener to break free from the mundane and immerse oneself in more. Where truth is not just music; it’s a gateway to joy.

Tongues of Fire

Most bands fit cleanly within a genre but Tongues of Fire don’t. At their heart they are a punk band, their shows are unhinged, the music is straightforward and hard hitting, there is no trace of excessiveness but they are accessible and there is a well crafted feel to what they do.

Rob Robinson

Rob Robinson creates vocal driven electronica, house, and vaporwave sounds inspired by 90s educational aesthetics on his upcoming debut record, “The Worldhouse Collection,” which is imbued with the “rompler” sample-synth sounds of the Roland D-50 and Korg M1 synthesizers.

Be a Sweetheart in Asheville with MANNA Foodbank
Feb 10 all-day
Asheville Mast General Store
Twenty-one is a “sweet” age! On this weekend before Valentine’s Day, choose your sweetie’s favorite sweets at Mast General Store, and join us in celebrating the 21st year of Be a Sweetheart by helping feed neighbors in our community.
For every pound of bulk candy purchased Saturday, February 10 – Sunday, February 11, Mast General Store will donate $1 to a local food security partner. The Asheville Mast Store’s partner is MANNA FoodBank.
While it doesn’t sound like much, a single dollar goes a long way towards fighting hunger! One dollar provides $5 in food value for MANNA FoodBank, which uses its network of resources to turn $1 into three or more meals.
Thank you for supporting Be a Sweetheart and our local food security partner as we make our community a sweeter place with a Valentine everyone can enjoy.
