For over 31 years, the Frostbite Races have motivated runners and walkers to stay active throughout the colder winter months. Participants brave the chilly temperatures to compete in a series of races, including a challenging 10K, a scenic 5K, or 1-mile fun run. Flurry the Penguin is always encouraging runners and walkers with high fives. The Family Fun Day and Wellness Expo add to the excitement with local vendors, wellness services, live music, and kid’s activities. The Frostbite Races have become a beloved tradition in Fletcher, NC, bringing the community together for a day of fitness and fun.

Dark City Poet’s Society
Great news for poets and poetry lovers: Dark City Poet’s Society is returning to the Black Mountain Library. DCPS is a completely free poetry group that is open to poets of all ages and experience levels. Join us at the Black Mountain Library from 6-7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month for our (respectful) critique group. This highly-experiential two-day workshop addresses the epidemic disconnection from our true selves, from other people, and from the natural world—major causes of personal unhappiness and planetary crisis—and gives participants tools for mending the separation, a fundamental step toward healing and wholeness.
Using a synthesis of the wisdom of our ancient ancestors and the latest in neuroscience and the psychology of belonging, we will immerse ourselves in the dynamics and collective awareness of the workshop group to:

Identify, explore and revise unhealthy stories about ourselves and our world,

Learn and practice essential skills in connecting deeply to others,

Experience ancient ways of being in relationship with the other-than-human, and

Innovate creative ways to foster belonging and connection in our everyday lives.

Dahlia Series: Getting Your Dahlias Ready for Planting

See how to take your tubers out of storage and prepare them for sprouting. We will show how to plan for staggered planting, where and when to plant out or pot up, and the first step of pruning your dahlias.
This will be an in-person program at the Extension office at the address above. This program will be held inside. The classroom size is limited so register to reserve your seat!

We are so excited to produce the Land and Lakes Relay again in 2024. The reviews of the new course and new direction were so positive that we just had to do it again.
The race will once start again at Warren Wilson College in East Asheville and finish at the amazing Fonta Flora Brewery-Whippoorwhill Farm in Nebo, near Lake James.
Now is the time to get your teams together to run and celebrate with us.
