Sweet Dreams, Full Plates Third Annual Campaign September
Sep 17 all-day
see below for participating hotels

Asheville’s hospitality industry is proving sweet dreams can truly turn into full plates.

This September, over 45 hotels are coming together for the third annual Sweet Dreams, Full Plates campaign – a major collaboration aimed at connecting Asheville area’s thriving tourism industry to local hunger relief issues.

The idea is simple. Hotel guests, during the month of September, are given the opportunity to forgo stayover services by hanging a door hanger on their room door. The door hanger says, “We Fed A Family,” and for every room that chooses to participate, the hotel makes a $2 donation on their behalf.

With each $2 donation, MANNA FoodBank is able to provide enough food for seven meals.

Bardic Alchemy at Triskelion
Sep 17 @ 11:00 pm – Sep 18 @ 1:00 am
Triskelion Brewing Company

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

So… Tuesdays… will now be…

Celtic Rock Tuesday!

Keb’ Mo’
Sep 17 @ 11:30 pm – Sep 18 @ 2:00 am
Peace Center

Over the past two decades, Keb’ Mo’ has cultivated a reputation as a modern master of American roots music.

It all took off for Keb’ Mo’ in 1994 with his self-titled release, and over the years, he has proven that he is a musical force that defies typical genre labels. Album after album, 14 in total, garnered him four Grammy® Awards and 11 nominations. Mo’ has also been awarded 11 Blues Foundation Awards and six BMI Awards for his work in TV and film. He created “Martha’s Theme” for the TV show Martha Stewart Living, wrote and performed the theme song for the hit sitcom Mike & Molly, and was the music composer for TNT’s Memphis Beat.

In 2017, Keb’ Mo’ released TajMo, a collaborative album with the legendary Taj Mahal, which earned a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. His list of artist collaborations comprises a who’s who in the music industry and includes Bonnie Raitt, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Jackson Browne, Natalie Cole, Lyle Lovett, India Arie, James Cotton, Bobby Rush, Timothy B. Schmit, Marcus Miller, and many more. His songs have been recorded by B.B. King, Buddy Guy, the Dixie Chicks, Joe Cocker, Robert Palmer, Tom Jones, Melissa Manchester, Solomon Burke, and the Zac Brown Band, to name a few. His guitar playing has even inspired leading instrument maker Gibson Brands to issue the Keb’ Mo’ Signature Bluesmaster and Bluesmaster Royale acoustic guitars and Martin Guitars to issue the HD-28KM Keb’ Mo’ Limited Edition Signature model.

Opening Act: Jontavious Willis

Every generation or so, a young bluesman bursts onto the scene and sends a jolt through the blues community; Jontavious Willis has that effect on people. The 22-year-old rising multi-instrumentalist will release Spectacular Class in April. The album features dynamic vocals and all types of blues: Delta, Piedmont, Texas, and Gospel. His stand-out fingerpicking, flat-picking, and slide prowess will also be on display. Living legend Taj Mahal has described him as the “Wonderboy” and “the Wunderkind.” In 2015, Mahal asked Willis to play on stage with him, and he opened select shows along the TajMo tour.

In true pub fashion, The White Horse has hosts a traditional Irish style session every Tuesday night. Sessions are in many ways the heart and soul of Irish traditional music, a place for players to share tunes and socialize. It’s not a performance, but rather an informal situation in which listeners are welcome to participate, whether offering encouragement, singing along on a chorus, or asking questions about the music and instruments. White Horse sessions regularly draws players from as far away as Waynesville, Cullowhee, Rutherfordton and even Clayton, Georgia.

Tickets: $10adv, https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jerry-paper-tickets-62338939446

Jerry Paper has signed to Stones Throw Records and will release the album Like A Baby this October.

Jerry Paper is the creative persona of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Lucas Nathan. For Like A Baby, Nathan enlisted the help of Matthew Tavares of BadBadNotGood a.k.a. Matty (who co-produced the album), Weyes Blood, Mild High Club’s Alex Brettin, and vocalist Charlotte Day Wilson.

Over the years, the Jerry Paper project has morphed from an experimental outlet to its current, more fully realised incarnation. It is, Nathan says, “always changing just as I am always changing as a person, and that change is central to what I create”.

Following albums for Bayonet Records and Orange Milk, Like A Baby continues Nathan’s oddball take on synthpop with a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. Nathan cites a vast pool of influences on the record, from fellow pop outliers Prefab Sprout, Todd Rundgren and Steely Dan — “a deep source of inspiration for me” — to classic R&B, Stereolab, avant-garde Brazilian artists, and Japanese electronica.

Inspired by a move from NYC back to Nathan’s hometown of LA, Like A Baby explores existential themes tied to “the endless human cycle of desire and satisfaction.” Its dystopian shopping imagery was inspired by afternoons spent wandering around malls and supermarkets. According to Nathan, the tension between form and content “melds my own simultaneous attraction to and disgust of life within this system. This record is a document of my attempt to step out of the cycle and view it from the outside.”

Opening the album are “Your Cocoon” a hazy, distorted take on pop, and lullaby-of-sorts “Grey Area”, laced with Weyes Blood’s heavenly vocals. Dystopia seeps into the everyday on “Everything Borrowed”, while “Commercial Break” and “My God” address the impulse to consume. “Baby” and “You” take a look at the blurred lines between facade and truth, and the album closes with bittersweet ballad “Losing The Game” and “Bad News”, an apt song despairing at the 24-hour news cycle.

Jerry Paper has shared the stage with Mac DeMarco, BadBadNotGood and Mild High Club, and plans to tour extensively around the new record. Five musicians join Nathan on stage for his eccentric performances, accompanying his vocals and wiggling dance moves on bass, drums, guitar, synth, and saxophone. For Nathan, performance is more than playing songs. He’s had out-of-body experiences on stage, which he describes as “a moment of pure ego dissolution that I can only get when I’m on stage while I’m grooving.”

On stage, Nathan says, “I embody an exaggerated version of myself, pushing it to a limit where I transcend my ego, in an effort to get the audience to shed their ideas of themselves, shed their egos, and be free.” The lyrics to “Your Cocoon” point to that freedom as Nathan sings, “I’m here dressed up like a cartoon / Asking please please burn your cocoon.”

Nathan adds, “I think binary ideas are directly contrary to the complexity and subtlety of the world, of lived experience. I try to use my music and performance to held rid people of binary thought as the default mode of engaging with the world.”
