West Side Story
Jul 13 @ 2:00 pm
Flat Rock Playhouse
West Side Story. July 1 - 30.

The number one requested musical from our 2019 show survey: you asked for it, you got it! From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City as two young, idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the ‘American’ Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of fear, violence, and prejudice remains one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching, and relevant musical dramas of our time. With a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story is widely regarded as among the best musicals ever written.

PATIO SHOW: Suzie Brown + Scot Sax
Jul 13 @ 5:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

SUZIE BROWN

A 1970s-inspired folk-pop songwriter, Suzie Brown has chased her unique muse for a decade, making modern-day roots music that nods to the soul singers, heartland rockers, and blues artists who came before her. Gluing the sound together is the unforced voice and honest, autobiographical songwriting of a Renaissance woman who’s not only an acclaimed musician, but also an Advanced Heart Failure cardiologist and mother of two. Her songs have earned recognition from the NewSong Music Competition, International Songwriting Competition, Independent Music Awards, Forbes and People Magazine. “I love everything about you, Suzie — you’re wearing a lot of hats, and wearing them all very well,” said broadcast journalist Gayle King during an episode of CBS This Morning that showcased Brown’s unique balancing act between music, medicine, and motherhood. Brown turns that balancing act into music, rolling with the punches, adjusting to the changing times, and writing the ever-evolving soundtrack to her journey.

SCOT SAX

Scot Sax knows his way around a solid pop song. He has spent more than 25 years onstage, in the studio, and in the writing room. With his band Wanderlust, he opened for The Who and had a radio hit with his song “I Walked.” Sax later toured with Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, co-wrote a Grammy-winning duet for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, and landed his songs in iconic movies like American Pie. Most recently, he reunited with Wanderlust and released the critically acclaimed album “All A View” that American Songwriter Magazine called “an album for the ages.”

Music and Community: Irish Music Circle
Jul 13 @ 7:00 pm
White Horse Black Mountain

Hosted by Richard and Melinda Halford

Sessions are in many ways the heart and soul of Irish traditional music, a place for players to share tunes and socialize. It’s not a performance, but rather an informal situation in which listeners are welcome to participate, whether offering encouragement, singing along on a chorus, or asking questions about the music and instruments. White Horse sessions regularly draws players from as far away as Waynesville, Cullowhee, Rutherfordton and even Clayton, Georgia.

The sessions are hosted by Richard and Melinda Halford. Drop by for a beer or a cup of tea and get uplifted by some great traditional tunes and a few new songs.

Come join us in a long musical tradition spanning hundreds of years.

Vision Video
Jul 13 @ 8:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

VISION VIDEO

As an active paramedic, firefighter, and veteran of the war in Afghanistan, Vision Video lead Dusty Gannon has seen more horror in real life than in the classic movies he draws inspiration from. When not saving lives on the front-line, Dusty dons torn fishnets, combat boots and makeup to play post-punk that recalls the genre’s heyday when the lines between goth and pop blurred to create some of the underground’s most beloved acts such as The Cure, The Smiths and Joy Division. But hidden within Vision Video’s catchy hooks and dancy beats is a nostalgic yet desperate message exploring the darker undertones of our existence. At its core, Inked In Red looks inward to understand the effects of war and the global pandemic. Dusty’s experiences in service have imparted an authentic gravitas to the music, revealing a cautionary tale of unhinged mental illness born of trauma. Sonically, this is reflected in every chord and melody through its enticingly gothic yet often upbeat nature. Vision Video’s debut imparts a duality of mania that, simply stated, is real malaise and existential dread that cannot be made facsimile.

BLOOD LEMON

When Boise three-piece Blood Lemon — singer/guitarist Lisa Simpson (Finn Riggins, Treefort Music Fest), singer/bassist Melanie Radford (Built to Spill, Marshall Poole) and percussionist Lindsey Lloyd (Tambalka) — formed, in 2018, out of a medley of mutual admiration, a cover band called Mostly Muff and a unanimous love of Kim Deal and 90s Riot Grrrl music, they had no idea they’d be writing a perfect soundtrack to kick off 2021. What they did know was that they were eager to play music with their fellow women; they wanted a sound informed by 90s stalwarts like Pixies, Hole and The Breeders; and they were ready to get political.

COLD CHOIR

Cold Choir launched from the sheer desire to create dark wave, dance music, with irreverent self-expression, poetry, and often-socially conscious subject matter. Mario (synth/production) and Franky M’s (singer/songwriter)music is ingrained in EBM, disco goth, early 80s electro, freestyle, and industrial, accompanied by a stirring vocal.

Perry's Berry's Vineyard and Winery

Throughout the summer of 2022, ASAP will present a series of on-farm symposiums for healthcare professionals in Western North Carolina to highlight the principles of Farm Fresh for Health. A seasonally focused farm-to-table meal (lunch or dinner) will be provided by a local food partner. Space is limited at each symposium. A $20 registration fee offsets the cost of meals and materials.

DINNER

Catered by Singlewyde, wood-fired sourdough pizza with local ingredients.

TOPICS

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs as part of workplace wellness, creating social healthy food environments in the community (including recreational activities and community and school gardens), youth engagement, social determinants of health

PRESENTERS

Terry and Debbie Perry are both registered nurses and have worked in the healthcare field for more than 40 years. They started Perry’s Berry’s Vineyard & Winery in 2009 as a way to bring their family closer together. They love teaching other families about the health benefits of farming and blueberries through farm tours, classes, and classroom visits. With more than 3,500 blueberry bushes, the farm offers u-pick opportunities and supplies blueberries to local breweries, grocery stores, bakeries, ice cream shops, and their very own blueberry wine.

West Marion Community Forum is using a community-centered health approach to drive systemic changes and address childhood obesity and the underlying factors that contribute to this health disparity in McDowell County, NC. West Marion works with historically excluded residents in African-American, Latinx, and white communities and is focusing on food access, physical activity, transportation, and youth engagement.

Todd Boera is the head brewer at Fonta Flora Brewery, integrating the soul of agriculture with the artisanship of zymurgy. Fonta Flora utilizes local artists to help conceptualize the notion that fermentation is yet another medium for creating art. This uniquely artisan approach to beer yields a sustainable product filled with culture from our very own community.

Jennifer Trippe, director of ASAP’s Growing Minds Farm to School program, is a Registered Dietitian with nearly two decades of experience working to improve the health and well-being of the Western North Carolina community. She has worked at MANNA FoodBank, Food Connections, and as a WIC Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator.

PATIO SHOW: Sara Jean Kelley + Sonia Leigh
Jul 14 @ 5:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

SARA JEAN KELLEY

A river beneath a river with an edgy sense of humor, Sara Jean Kelley is an explorer, a rescuer, naturalist, and an active member of her creative community. Born and raised by the venerable bluegrass songwriter, Irene Kelley, Sara loves wild plants and animals and music and people and has the scars and stories to prove it. Sara’s songs are conceptual, yet relatable. Her voice is timeless, yet singularly her own. And her delivery can shift, like the weather, from dark and sultry, to light-as-a-feather.

A triple Scorpio, she has been compared to Brandi Carlile, Patty Griffin, and Lucinda Williams, and has already shared the stage with legends such as Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Sara studied evolutionary biology in Durango, Colorado and her first EP, The Wild explored her connection with the earth, and the soil; the relationship she has with and honor she holds for the natural world. Sara’s latest EP, Black Snake is about life and death, transformation and rebirth, strength and resilience; all the things you experience in your early thirties that you wish you had known a decade earlier.

SONIA LEIGH

Sonia Leigh’s sound is a bit like Bruce Springsteen, Melissa Etheridge, and The Killers smashed with the lip curl, growling swag of Joan Jett. She brings that same wild fire to her live shows, keeping your ear tuned in to her prolific lyrics that evoke a visceral response.

Sonia made her country catapult on Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Records in 2011 with “My Name Is Money” hitting top 40 on billboard hot 100 charts. Followed up landing two #1 songs for Zac Brown Band with “Goodbye in Her Eyes” and “Sweet Annie” on their grammy winning record Uncaged.

Recent independent leaps span genres weaving into Americana, pop, alt-rock, and even hip-hop. Her 2018 full length release titled Mad Hatter showcases her production skills and versatility with easy flow. In 2020 here single “Give You Love” offers a sweeter pop side that sways and bleeds. Then a quick surprise followed up with “King Without a Kingdom” feat. Rob The Man that swings with a hard grunge rock fist. In December 2021 the rerelease of “1978 December” produced by Roger Taylor (drummer for the rock band Queen) shows the song in a more cinematic light and highlights her piano skills. This is no surprise to her fans, musical fluidity have always been a catalyst for Sonia’s creativity.

She has toured the world with the likes of Eric Church, Melissa Etheridge, BONES UK, Zac Brown Band, Uncle Kracker, Brett Young, Michael Ray, Eli Young Band and shared stages with legends such as Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, and Joan Jett.

In 2019 she caught the eye of BMG New York and quickly signed on as song writer. Her music has been featured on hit T.V. shows, promo’s, feature films and video games, rapidly gaining her a name in the music sync world. Sonia’s conviction can hush a room and shake the walls with her raw, raspy energy, squeezing every drop out of the stage. She is currently touring and working on her new album due out 2022.
