The Aristocrats
Jul 28 @ 8:30 pm
Isis Music Hall--The Main Stage

http://the-aristocrats-band.com/

Over the past eight years The Aristocrats – guitarist Guthrie Govan (Steven Wilson, Asia/GPS, Hans Zimmer), bassist Bryan Beller(Joe Satriani, Dethklok), and drummer Marco Minnemann (Steven Wilson, Joe Satriani, Steve Hackett) – have released critically acclaimed albums, toured the world, and established themselves as one of the most musically original, refreshingly irreverent, and astoundingly entertaining instrumental rock-fusion acts on the planet. Anyone who’s witnessed their live musical high-wire act – employing random amounts of rock, jazz, pop, metal, and even traditional country – can attest that it is informed by the spirit of a true band, one whose improvisational soul allows for anything to happen onstage at any moment…including the occasional wink and nod at the audience. Perhaps Guthrie Govan said it best when he called The Aristocrats “a rowdy democracy of musicianship.”

Despite their individual followings, The Aristocrats’ formation was a matter of happenstance on a barely-paying gig. The electricity was immediately obvious, with their unbeknownst-to-them shared influences infusing a high-energy instrumental fusion with an aggressive, playful, even cheeky edge. The audience response was overwhelming, and the band formed practically by demand on the spot. Three months later, the trio convened in person – eschewing the usual remote file sharing method in favor of actual live band chemistry – to track the album. Consisting of nine tracks (three contributions from each member), the material was a melting pot of their respective influences, ranging from the seminal ’70s jazz-rock fusion of Return To Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra, to the progressive rock of King Crimson and UK, to guitar heroes like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, to the absurdly complex and satirical music of Frank Zappa and Mike Keneally, and even to ’90s groove metal like Rage Against The Machine.

Tracked in just eight days, The Aristocrats debut album The Aristocrats [2011] was hailed as an instant classic in leading music publications worldwide, appearing on many of that year’s top ten lists. In less than a year, The Aristocrats became one of the most sought-after live instrumental rock/fusion acts in the world. In 2013, the band released their long-awaited sophomore album, Culture Clash. The material became more aggressive, adventurous, and intense, embodying a refusal to rest on the laurels of the debut album’s surprise success. Culture Clash debuted on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart at #8. Throughout this time The Aristocrats toured the world, bringing their live energy and otherworldly chemistry multiple times to North America, Europe and Asia. This around-the-world touring madness was documented on the live CD/DVDs BOING, We’ll Do It Live! [2012] and Culture Clash Live [2015].

For the band’s third studio album, Tres Caballeros [2015], they rewrote their own rules. The Aristocrats set up camp at legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood, CA, where Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and Van Halen all recorded landmark albums. The result was nine compositions of greater sonic depth and breadth than ever before, with unique textures and lush layering augmenting the band’s near-telepathic ability to improvise both individually and as a group at the highest levels possible.

The Tres Caballeros world tour began in summer 2015 with an 8-week stint across North America, followed by a winter European leg, and topped off with tour dates throughout Asia, Australia and South America in 2016. It was interspersed with a short landmark stint as the third “G” in a G3 tour with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (the first time any “band” became a “G” on that bill). That’s some heavy touring, but not to worry –it was all still tempered with a steadfast refusal to take themselves too seriously, and The Aristocrats were still having more fun than an instrumental band has any right to have.

Fast forward to 2019 and The Aristocrats have just recorded their most ambitious and exploratory album in their eight year history. You Know What…? is their fourth studio album and includes nine new tracks recorded at Brotheryn Studios, Ojai, CA. Having taken a little time away to work on other projects, the band were excited to be back together doing what they do best and producing a sound that’s at once fresh and new but unmistakably the work of The Aristocrats with their trademark blend of discipline and musical freedom. True to form, the album doesn’t hitch its wagon to any one genre. The only rules the trio live by are that the music must be pleasurable for the listener and it most definitely has to be fun to play.

From the filthy, greasy rock of “D Grade F*ck Movie Jam” and “Terrible Lizard”, to the quirky anything-goes madness of “Spiritus Cactus” and “Spanish Eddie”, to the lavishly arranged “Burial At Sea” and “When We All Come Together”, and to the timeless melodies of “All Said And Done” and Last Orders”, You Know What…? is an album full of addictive grooves, high energy jamming and seemingly impossible musical twists and turns. The Aristocrats are undoubtedly back and ready to blow some minds.

This is a standing show. – a limited number of VIP Reserve Seating are available. Additionally, some limited seating is available with general admission tickets in the balcony first come, first served – you may save a seat while having dinner prior to the concert

Dinner reservations can be made in the front dining room prior to the show by calling the venue at 828-575-2737

HART Theatre presents The Music Man
Jul 29 @ 7:30 pm
HART’s Main Stage

HART’s Main Stage
Directed by Candice Dickinson

There is trouble in River City, Iowa when con artist Harold Hill rolls into town. Hill poses as a boys’ band organizer and sells uniforms and instruments to the naive midwestern folk, planning to leave town before he ever has to teach a single music lesson. But those plans are turned on their head when Harold Hill meets the clever town Librarian, Marian Paroo. One of the most universally cherished treasures of American musical theater, The Music Man was an instant smash hit when it premiered on Broadway in 1957, winning five Tony Awards, and going on to a long career of revivals, tours, and regional performances.  The Smithsonian Institution ranks The Music Man as one of the “great glories” of American popular culture. Don’t miss this summer smash hit!

Suitable for all audiences.

In this Tony award-winning musical, six awkward spelling champions vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the champions spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, six spellers enter; one speller wins!

Songcatchers Music Series: The Foreign Landers
Jul 30 @ 3:00 pm
Cradle of Forestry in America

Song Catchers Event

Sponsored by long-time partners Morrow Insurance, the Songcatchers Music Series are summer concerts held at the outdoor amphitheater at Cradle of Forestry in Pisgah National Forest. This series celebrates the musical traditions of the Southern Appalachians, ancient and new. The Songcatchers Music Series draws its name from the film of the same name that tells the story of Olive Dame Cambell, founder of the John C Campbell Folk School, who traveled the southern Appalachian Mountains in the early 20th century to capture the musical traditions preserved by the secluded mountain communities. This series seeks to share those traditions that still thrive within the talented regional artists that grace the cozy little stage at The Cradle of Forestry.

The Foreign Landers is a duo hailing from opposite sides of the Atlantic united by their love of bluegrass and traditional folk music and their love for each other. Together they combine the musical styles of their respective homelands, along with their instrumental prowess and haunting vocals to create something new.

It was more than unlikely circumstances that brought these two together.  David Benedict grew up in South Carolina playing with the only Celtic folk band in town, while Tabitha Agnew was perhaps the only 12 year-old in Northern Ireland who started playing the 5-string banjo after a chance hearing of an Alison Krauss & Union Station record. Ironically, it took each a while to discover the traditional music of their own countries, but they eventually came around. Both excelled at their instruments and found themselves playing with some of the most promising young acoustic bands on the scene today—David with the Boston-band Mile Twelve and Tabitha with both Cup O’Joe and Midnight Skyracer from the UK. With such unique common threads, there was an instant connection when Tabitha and David finally met.

Now married and based in the States, the Benedicts are finally making music on their own. Their forth-coming debut EP marks the first chapter in their journey together, and the release of the title track “Put All Your Troubles Away” will take you along with them to uncharted musical territories.

PATIO SHOW: Asheville Junction

Asheville Junction is one of Asheville’s newest bluegrass/Americana bands, playing fun and lively music right out the gate. Our shows feature female and male vocals and harmonies, hot fiddlin’ and instrumentals, beautiful ballads, beloved standards, unique covers and originals. There’s a lot going on at the Asheville Junction! Folks find themselves singing, clapping, stomping or laughing along to our music before they know it.

Tierra Raiti, lead singer and fiery fiddler for the band, has been noticed as a formidable rising musician and invited to appear on the Woodsongs International Radio Show in March 2022. Tierra was a featured singer and player on an album she cut when she was 14 years old, Galax to Toledo Tracks. Recordings from this album have been played in roots and Americana radio shows around the world. Still in high school, Tierra is a phenomenally accomplished and versatile singer and fiddler, having won numerous fiddle contests and violin competitions, as well as singing competitions and scholarships ranging from jazz to classical to country.

Asheville Junction formed when mother-daughter duo Tierra and Maria Raiti moved to Asheville from Ohio and joined up with long-time local musicians Brad Pope on upright bass, Tim Comstock on mandolin and Frank Eastes ringing out the 5-string banjo. As a newly formed band with experienced and talented musicians and sounds, we are excited and honored that we’re scheduled to play at many of the region’s established community events, breweries and music venues in our first year.

Steve James is an original roots music adept whose guitar, mandolin, singing and writing have made him familiar around the world to those whose inner soundtrack resonates to real folk and blues. Steve’s musical journey of over half a century started in New York where childhood playthings included Leadbelly 78s and his Dad’s dusty guitar. That trip led from the lofts of the Lower East Side to the hills of Tennessee, Memphis and the deeper South where the young autodidact got pointed in the right direction by elder wizards like Sam McGee and Furry Lewis who told him: “Get your own song!” Settling in Texas, Steve employed what he’d learned during his journeywork on stage and in the studio to become known as “an underground legend” at home and to embark on world travels that continue to the present. Taking the “pass it on” covenant that comes with learning real roots music seriously, he has participated in literally hundreds of music workshops and camps and created numerous books and video lessons for guitar and mandolin. Also experienced as a luthier, Steve, who now calls Seattle home, devotes his down time to the repair and restoration of vintage instruments and has acted as a product rep and design consultant for Collings and National, the makers of his signature model guitar.

HART Theatre presents The Music Man
Jul 30 @ 7:30 pm
