Asheville Art Museum
Join us for one or both afternoons of art-filled fun. Students in grades 1–4 spend their time creating art of all kinds. All supplies and a snack are provided. Students are encouraged to wear clothes that can get messy. Preregistration is required; register online now, or call 828.253.3227 x124 for more information or to register by phone.
Come watch the big game at Salvage! We will have $4 drafts, $3 well drinks, and 1/2 off all of our appetizers all day!

Soft pastel is the purest medium for painting vibrant colors. In this four-part class, explore color, texture, and design to create beautiful finished artworks. Practice blending, layering, and a variety of strokes and techniques, in addition to color theory, design, and individual expression.
Instructor Terrilynn Dubreuil has over 30 years’ experience encouraging people of all ages and abilities to realize they can be creative with helpful techniques and energy. With an undergraduate degree and graduate studies in fine art, she teaches most media through approaches that help newbies to more experienced artists, and everyone in between.
Adult Studio
The Museum’s studio program for adults offers a core curriculum in drawing, painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional media, and also explores the intersections between them. Local and visiting artists help students of all levels and abilities develop skills in media that reflect techniques and themes featured in the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions. Classes meet for 3–12 weeks, and are designed for anyone interested in exploring specific media in depth; daylong workshops introduce new media or processes. Shapeshifters brings together the works of two acclaimed regional artists, Cherokee-based Joshua Adams and Atlanta-based Jiha Moon, who use masks and other objects to explore culture, material, and representation, particularly in the contemporary American South.
The Library Advisory Board has vacancies for three members, one to represent each district in Buncombe County. | Asheville Mardi Gras Parade February 23 |
 The 13th annual Asheville Mardi Gras parade will take place on February 23 in South Slope and we’re looking for parade day volunteers. The Asheville Mardi Gras parade is an all-inclusive, family friendly, full-color spectacle that is fun, entertaining, full of music, floats, dancing and celebrating. Spectators receive beads and candy and the photo opportunities are always amazing.
Details include: * About 20-25 volunteers needed for this rain or shine event.
*Setting up, manning and breaking down street barricades
*Assisting with krewe and float line up and timing as the parade begins
*Identifying parked cars that might need to be towed and checking for obstacles to smooth crowd control along the parade route.
*Coordinating with the Parade Logistics manager and city police
*Carrying 1 or 2 parade banners (Costumes optional but always encouraged!)
*Assisting with end of parade float disbursement
*Trash pick up following the parade set up and marching route. This is mostly paper trash and beads. It’s rarely more than a few bags total.
*Returning barricades, cones, etc. to the post-parade collection point
Confirmed Volunteer perks include $10 gift card to Vortex Donuts & Coffee and a free beer at Catawba. Possibly more perks to come!

We’re bringing back our White Zombie 5k for the second year. To kick off registration, we’re throwing a party on Feb. 6! We’ll offer a $5 registration discount to the 5k; a neighborhood fun run; and zombie-fun galore: from drinks to merchandise. The White Zombie 5k (on May 30 during AVL Beer Week) benefits MANNA FoodBank. $5/ registration goes to MANNA.

The Asheville Truffle Experience will kick off at 5:00pm on Friday February 7th, at the Benjamin Walls Gallery at 38 Broadway, with a welcome tasting featuring multiple truffled appetizers by Chef Anthony Cerrato, truffled ice cream by Ultimate, music by Aoife Clancy and Bill Elliott of Celtic ConFusion, wines by Benjamin Walls, and a chance to mingle and share stories with other true truffle aficionados.
Saturday morning, February 8th will begin with a Truffle Panel Seminar, and will feature several experts in the field of truffle history, cultivation, and usage. Saturday afternoon will continue with a culinary demo & tasting, followed by a Truffle Market at the Haywood Park Hotel Atrium, featuring truffle products, services, and seedlings, and lots of other cool trivia.
On Saturday evening, Chef Peter Crockett of Isa’s Bistro will provide guests with a selection of provocative dishes including Truffle-studded bone marrow parfait, Savory truffle honey-glazed bear claw, Truffle agnolotti with pork trotter consommé, Passion fruit granité, and a Black truffle trio of macaroon, mini chocolate éclair, and ice cream.
On Sunday, February 9th, we will head out to the truffle orchard at the Mountain Research Station in Waynesville, overseen by Dr. Jeanine Davis and Leonora Stefanile. There, we will witness a Lagotto romagnolo in action (Monza, accompanied by her trainer Lois Martin of the Truffle Dog Company), observe the brulée that has formed around host trees which have recently achieved their first production, and—with luck—unearth a few fresh specimens of Tuber melanosporum.
