The Center’s newest documentary film focuses on the iconic moonshiners. Rather than the stereotypes of lazy, drunken mountaineers, moonshiners were some of the most entrepeneurial and creative farmers in a community who not only provided a public service but helped to put food on the table for themselves and their communities. The stories are both heart-rending, funny and moving and open a window into the soul of the Southern Appalachian world that’s rapidly vanishing.
All screenings include live music by Apple Country String Band or Bandana Rhythm as well as a talk with the director and local moonshiners. The screening at North River Farms is drive-in theater event with a food truck.
This is a general admission event. Tickets vary by venue in order to maintain social distancing. As social distancing rules change, we will update this site which may make more (or even less) seats available. Right now, each site has limited capacity and tickets are expected to sell out quickly. As a special offer for our ticketbuyers, if you purchase the DVD along with your tickets, you get $5 off the DVD price and save the additional $5 shipping and handling. (Do not choose this option until after you’ve bought your tickets first or you will be charged a $5 processing fee to return your money.)
See venue information below for more details. This is a ticket-less event. Your name will be at the reservations table at the door at the time of the event. Outside venues are subject to weather dates if necessary. Your tickets are automatically good for these weather dates should the event not go on for the original date. All sales are final and tickets are non-refundable once purchased.
UPDATE: As things open up more, masks are optional at all venues, social distancing and masks are still encouraged. Thanks for your understanding!

Architectural works from past world’s fairs are aspirational visions. Most of these fantastical structures were meant to be temporary, but dozens of examples still remain. Some legacies from past fairs have lasted more than a century, like the iconic Eiffel Tower, while others have descended into neglect and ruin in a few decades. Yet, all of them represent the remnants of a fictional future that has been redefined by more pragmatic needs.
In Jade Doskow: Photographer of Lost Utopias, filmmaker Philip Shane follows architectural landscape photographer Jade Doskow on her 10-year quest to capture the monumental world’s fair echoes that remain worldwide. Lugging around her bulky, 4 × 5 large-format film camera, she travels to cities across the globe such as Paris, New York, Brussels, Montreal, Seville, Chicago, and Seattle. Rather than focus strictly on the subjects of her photos, Shane provides an insider’s look into the artist’s painstaking process of setting up precise vantage points for each building—taking a handful of frames at each location—then spending weeks or months on the digital-editing process, ever careful to highlight subtle shadings and color patterns to create the perfect, immaculate print. Jade Doskow: Photographer of Lost Utopias takes the viewer on a journey through the mind of an artist struggling to navigate between the practical demands of her personal life and the hyperidealistic relics of a future never fully realized.
Introduction and Q&A with Philip Shane, filmmaker, and Jade Doskow, photographer. Presented in conjunction with Intersections in American Art; sponsored by Tracey Morgan Gallery.

At the 1968 Olympics, US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists from the podium during the medal ceremony as the American anthem played. Though this choice radically impacted Smith—throwing his personal and professional life into disarray—the defiant gesture has reverberated throughout the decades, adopted by generations of civil rights activists in their fight for social justice. Fifty years later, in an attempt to unpack the full breadth of Smith’s sacrifice—and the myriad ways it continues to resonate in the current reckoning over the racial injustice that still plagues America—artist and filmmaker Glenn Kaino partners with the gold medalist to finally tell his story and to cement his legacy. As the two collaborate on a multidisciplinary art project, they connect with a new generation of activists. Featuring interviews with Megan Rapinoe, Colin Kaepernick, the late Congressman John Lewis, and Jesse Williams—who, along with John Legend, also executive-produced the film—Kaino and Afshin Shahidi’s With Drawn Arms is a testament to the courage of those willing to make their voices heard, no matter the cost.
Virtual introduction and Q&A with co-director Glenn Kaino and Whitney Richardson, associate curator. Presented in conjunction with Artistic Tribute: Representation of the Athlete, Golden Hour: Olympians Photographed by Walter Iooss Jr., and Precious Medals: Gold, Silver, Bronze
