Organic Growers School Apprentice Link database for Farming
Mar 27 all-day
Online w/ Organic Growers School

The Apprentice Link database connects people who are serious about learning the sustainable farming trade with farmers who are willing to teach them in an apprenticeship setting. Our programs’ emphasis is specifically in the Southern Appalachians, with a focus on farms that participate in local Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) programs.

To be included in this listing, Organic Growers School has vetted each farm to determine of the following criteria has been met:

  • Farms are actively engaged in the local community.
  • Farms are using organic and/or sustainable production methods. Organic Certification and other certifications are not required, but we do ask that farms and farmers are “in-the-know” and conscientiously practicing organic standards.
  • Farms are dedicated to training new farmers by providing education as a pinnacle element of their apprenticeship program.

As you all know too well, we all had to pivot last Spring due to COVID precautions. We’ll be keeping those same precautions in place this year:
* All attendees must wear masks and maintain 6 ft. distance from other gardeners/visitors.
* All plants are available on a sliding scale – if there’s a stick/label in it, then you pay from $3-$5/each…you get to decide.
* We’re using the honor system, so you pick out your plants, decide what you are going to pay, then either leave payment in donation bin or pay via CashApp.
* Green donation bin is located near the garden entrance by the turquoise tool shed. We accept cash or checks (payable to Hood Huggers International).
* Using CashApp? You’ll need to download the app and set up your account ahead of time, then click $, enter amount, click pay, and enter $HoodHuggers.
As always, we are grateful for your patronage/support, happy that our little plants get to find a home in our community, and will use the proceeds from the sale to support expanded programming in the Peace Gardens.

WNC Nature Center! Welcomes new members Samson and Bonita Red Foxes
Mar 27 @ 10:00 am – 3:30 pm
WNC Nature Center

red foxes

Welcome to your new home, Samson and Bonita!  The two red foxes will be joining the other residents of the WNC Nature Center and are coming to us from Izzie’s Pond Sanctuary in Liberty, S.C.

Samson and Bonita have something more in common than their new home.  They are both less than a year old and were both injured as a result of being caught in leg-hold traps and each has three legs, which means they would not be able to survive in the wild but can live safely in a zoo environment.

“The Nature Center has long provided excellent care for animals that, for one reason or another, could not live in the wild,” said WNC Nature Center Director Chris Gentile. “We are so excited to be able to welcome red foxes back to our Center.”

Come say “Hi!” to Samson and Bonita at the WNC Nature center beginning Feb. 11, when they’ll enter their new habitat for the first time.

Blacksmithing & Brews
Mar 27 @ 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Earthshine Lodge

Experience the basics of shaping hot steel with a hammer and anvil in our unforgettable Blacksmithing & Brews workshop. No experience is necessary as our instructor will guide you every step of the way in this basics of blacksmithing program, helping you work a piece of rough steel into a one of a kind, hand crafted knife form you can take home. After the workshop, you can enjoy a local brew on the front deck of our main lodge overlooking Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can take it easy, soaking up the mountain views while you sip, or work on refining your knife to transform its rugged, fresh-out-of-the-fire look to a smoother, cleaner finish. (We’ll provide the tools!)

Ages 13+ are welcome, but you must be at least 21 to be served beer. If you’re under 21, we’ll provide root beer or sparkling water. Each person participating will take home their own wrought iron crude knife form that can be used as a letter opener or simple spreading utensil.

Reservations are required to reserve your spot for the Blacksmithing & Brews experience.

Outdoor Stage: A Night of Funk and Friends
Mar 27 @ 5:30 pm
Salvage Station

A Night of Funk and Friends

Join us for a night of funk and friends as The Salvage Station welcomes an explosive lineup on Saturday March 27th! First off, masterminds Derrick Lee Johnson (Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band) and Ben Hovey (Pitbull) present Evil Note Lab.  ENL will start off the night with its groove inspired Ableton mashup of electronic and live instruments behind the lyrical stylings of The Foulmouth Jerk.  Right after that, Josh Blake brings his organic organ trio JBOT to the stage featuring Patrick Armitage on drums, Simon Thomas George on keys, and Marisa Blake on vocals.  Then, the classic Asheville hip-hop collective GFE, pioneers of the Asheville music scene and respected innovators of conscious hip-hop and will be emerging from their chamber to grace the Salvage Station audience with a rare performance.  GFE comes together for about one show a year, so you won’t want to miss this opportunity to soak in some of that God Force Energy.  To finish the nights musical onslaught, we have The Tuesday Night Funk Jam House Band, who is itching to play for folks after the pandemic forced their weekly live performances into hiatus.  This lineup will likely never be seen like this again, and the forecast for inter-set collaborations are high, so come on out for a one of a kind musical explosion of Asheville talent!
