Dave’s family is proud and honored to create the Dave Hart Scholarship Fund in honor of his dedication to, and passion for the students and families he served and adored. The funds will be used to support full and partial scholarships for Studio 52 students beginning this fall. You can click below to donate or you can mail your donation to PO Box 310, Flat Rock, NC. 28731. Please include Dave Hart Scholarship in memo-line / letter.
Equity underlies everything we do. We serve immigrants, low-wealth, and disadvantaged individuals of every age. We know that literacy is the primary determinant of health, employment, income levels, and constructive self-expression. In 2017, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) found that sixty percent of children nationwide are not reading proficiently. Without intervention children who do not read proficiently become adults with low literacy and the cycle continues. Our one-on-one and small group tutoring is free and based on students’ schedules, making it accessible to those who would otherwise be unable to afford or attend traditional classroom settings.
Our Ideal Volunteer Tutor
The ideal volunteer tutor is someone seeking to make a one-year commitment of two hours per week to help someone else make the change of a lifetime. For our volunteer tutors, an education background is helpful, but not necessary. The most important qualities are patience, an open mind, and resourcefulness. Tutors also need to be non-judgmental and sensitive to cultural differences. A GED or high school diploma is required. Ideal tutors enjoy seeing concrete outcomes from their efforts and sharing in the life-changing successes of others. See our full tutor position description here.

Bowls” fundraiser has once again been postponed and with a different format. The fundraiser
was originally set for March 29, and then pushed back to September 27, 2020. Now organizers
have decided to honor only current ticket holders to an event on Saturday, October 3, 2020.
There will be no food or beverages served or any further ticket sales. Original ticket purchasers
will be contacted to pick up a hand-crafted bowl made by a local pottery artist at The Episcopal
Church of St. John in the Wilderness, 1905 Greenville Hwy, Flat Rock.
The traditional Empty Bowls event plans to return in the future.

Virtual Zoom lab session in the morning and socially distanced stream side demonstration at the Big Ivy River in the afternoon!
Have fun sampling local streams for water quality! This regional effort trains adults (17+) in water quality monitoring methods. Topics covered include: basic stream ecology, how to report water quality problems, aquatic insect identification, and field sampling skills. No experience necessary. Donations accepted to defray materials cost (not required for participation).
After training, volunteers work in small groups with a Group Leader to sample sites in Haywood, Madison, Buncombe, Yancey, and Mitchell counties in the spring and fall each year. Fall Sampling Start Date TBA!

Hard 2 Recycle is headed to Henderson County for the first time on Saturday, October 10th 10am-2pm. This event will be held in the TEDC Overflow Lot at Blue Ridge Community. We need volunteers to help run this event smoothly! Volunteers will be required to wear masks and follow physical distancing guidelines. PPE will be provided. Register to volunteer and join our Info Session on Wednesday October 7th at 10am via Zoom.

Funds raised during this year’s Drums & Dragons will allow Blue Ridge Health to greatly improve medical treatment options for low-income families, help The Community Table prevent families in Jackson County from going to bed hungry, and allow developmentally challenged adults to thrive with the help of caring Staff of the Irene Wortham Center. Your generosity will also help St. Gerard House improve their capacity to serve children with autism, allow caregivers respite while their family members attend MountainCare’s Adult Day services, and provide low-cost temporary housing at the Rathbun House, the only Hospitality House in the region, for non-Buncombe area residents whose families are undergoing medical treatment in nearby hospitals. If you are interested in volunteering, there is an ongoing need for volunteers at the Thrift Store! Positions range from one time to regularly occurring shifts, across a range of positions. All proceeds from purchases at the Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store go directly to helping animals at Blue Ridge Humane Society with housing, medical care, routine vet care and vaccinations, and more, as they are on their journey to a new, loving home.

The Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store is operated by the Blue Ridge Humane Society with proceeds directly helping animals in our care. Our store is almost entirely volunteer run. The Thrift Store is located at 1214 Greenville Highway, Hendersonville, NC, and is open 9:30am-4:30pm,Tuesday-Saturday. The store sells gently used donated items, including clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, furniture, linens, “boutique” items from upscale designer fashions, antiques, crafting supplies, as well as a limited selection of electronics.
