With over 175 regional and national artists—each handpicked and personally invited to the event— this show promises to surprise and entrance you. Visitors can interact with artisans, see live art demos, purchase beautiful artwork, or simply enjoy the craftsmanship behind each piece. When in need of a break, art lovers can also relax, get a drink or snack, listen to live music and log into the Internet at the new Art Patron Lounge area. At a moment when the rights of immigrants are under constant attack, a more complete story of immigration needs to be told to address the harms perpetuated by immigration enforcement practices and policies that extend beyond the crisis at the border. Whether it’s through raids, people being picked up at courthouses, or being forced to take sanctuary – families are being targeted and separated across the country.

This fall, Muddy Sneakers will host Asheville’s only screening of Mountainfilm on Tour for the third year, debuting at a new downtown location. The 2019 edition of Mountainfilm will take place Saturday, Nov. 23 at The Orange Peel in Asheville, offering a chance for the community to come together to celebrate connection to the natural world and support a regional outdoor science education program.
The evening will feature a selection of culturally rich, adventure-packed, and inspiring documentary films curated from the Mountainfilm festival in Telluride, Colo. This year’s lineup includes thoughtful storytelling and dazzling cinematography exploring themes connected to Mountainfilm’s mission: using the power of film, art, and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world.
A Mountainfilm presenter will guide the audience through the program, providing insight on the films, filmmakers, and subjects. Doors open at 6 p.m.; films start at 7 p.m. All proceeds benefit programming at Muddy Sneakers, a Brevard-based nonprofit that introduces a growing number of students across the state to the joy of learning outside.

The Friends of Fairview Library welcome Robin Russell Gaiser, author of ‘Open for Lunch’, on Tuesday, January 7th at 7pm.

In her book, Gaiser writes of her encounters with a dozen strangers in casual lunch spots from upstate New York to Asheville, North Carolina. She began these encounters almost by chance when she invited someone in line with her at a Subway restaurant to share her table. But as she pursued such encounters over the years, she gradually became “the reporter reporting on myself. Soon the stunning stories of my lunch mates took me deeply into my own narrative.”
