Gravitation-
Formed along the reaches of the Great Dismal Swamp, Gravitation’s sound is melodic vocals, intricate and hard-hitting guitar riffs and throbbing tempo variations with a heavy dose of today’s rock/metal grind. With a voice likened to a fallen angel, lead-singer Meghan Powell was featured in several local bands in northeastern NC in her early teens. During her high-school years she immersed herself in the local theatre and music scenes. With a load of natural talent, guitarist Chris Herrin began playing on a public stage when he was only fifteen years old. He was the lead guitarist for a number of local cover bands before finding his hard rock niche with Meghan and Karl. Drummer Karl Gupton, originally from Claremont, Virginia, played the Tidewater/RVA music scene for many years in bands like Last Call and J.C. Possum. Influenced by a gamut of musical genres, Gravitation formed in 2010 when the members met while working on another musical project. By a combination of hard work and extreme luck, Gravitation met legendary rock guitarist and producer John LeCompt in October 2015. In a collaborative effort with LeCompt on bass guitar, Gravitation recorded Accelerate, their first EP at Red Room Studios in April 2016. Their debut full length album is set to be released in 2018.

ILLITERATE LIGHT (HARRISONBURG, VA)
Formed in the summer of 2015, Illiterate Light transcends expectations of the typical rock duo. Jeff Gorman elevates his gritty guitar melodies and honest lyricism by stomping out thunderous synth bass with his feet as Jake Cochran layers lush vocal harmony and explodes with body convulsing energy around his minimalist standing drum kit. Gorman and Cochran’s incessant writing, commanding live performance, and constant touring promise a bright future as they work with Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings of Leon, Chris Stapleton), Adrian Olsen (Foxygen, Natalie Prass), among others. Their new single “Better Than I Used To” is currently on NPR’s “Heavy Rotation: Ten Hot Summer Songs Public Radio Can’t Stop Playing.”
Spanning the better part of a decade, the creative evolution between Gorman and Cochran is far from typical. The duo has run an organic farm in the Shenandoah Valley, toured the mid-Atlantic by bicycle in several acoustic bands, and lived in small communities while pursuing modes of alternative education. Their eclectic background is mirrored in their sound and lyricism, floating between pools of postmodern confusion and rivers of vibrant optimism. Though shaped by the eclectic music scene of their hometown Harrisonburg VA, the duo has grown immensely through immersion in the thriving alternative scenes in both Richmond VA and Nashville TN.
LANDON ELLIOTT (Richmond, VA)
With a commanding voice that floats between the spirits of Chris Stapleton and Thrice, singer/songwriter Landon Elliott delivers earworm melodies and sobering lyrics drawn from his upbringing in small-town North Carolina to his move to Richmond in 2013. Elliott is ever in search of the human common denominator, pushing and pulling on stories with hooks and guitar riffs that call to mind early Kings of Leon recordings and Bruce Springsteen sonics. His debut LP will be released in early 2019 on American Paradox Records.
CLINT ROBERTS (Boone, NC)
Americana Singer/Songwriter from Western North Carolina. Starting fresh with new EP “Where The Heart Is”
JON CHARLES DWYER (Asheville, NC)

Well it’s mountain song weekend and we are hosting the after party both nights!!!
Pretty Little Goat is grassroots music at its finest. The band formed in 2013 through their common grounding in the deep well of local tradition found in the mountains of Western North Carolina. As young lovers of old-time music, Pretty Little Goat began winning string band competitions right away. Over the last four years the Goats have collaborated with many well respected local musicians including Jamie Laval, Blake Ellege, members of the Steep Canyon Rangers, Jeff Sipe, Jonathan Grey of Jump Little Children and many others.
Members of the band are dedicated mentors to the next generation of musicians. Always looking for new and exciting ways to inspire young people, they have been deeply involved in the local JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program, music camps, schools and more.
Pretty Little Goat sees traditional music is a living art form; vibrant and evolving. Their debut self-titled album released in 2016 presents unique interpretations of old-time songs and tunes along with original material. The band is working towards another album of mostly original material. Stay tuned!
Pretty Little Goat’s distinct lineup makes them stand out in the world of string music. Mallory Carter plays washboard like nobody you’ve ever seen. JT Linville is an exceptionally tasteful bassist. Owen Grooms plunks the banjo like water rolling over rocks. Josh Carter presents a unique mandolin style that is accentuated by the absence of a guitar in this string band. Come see for yourself!

From the writing team behind last year’s smash sensation The Dixie Swim Club. In this rollicking comedy, four friends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their Senior Prom: to be in each other’s weddings, and hilarity ensues. If you’ve ever elbowed a stranger to catch a bride’s bouquet or have been forced to wear the world’s ugliest bridesmaid dress, this deliriously funny play by Jones Hope Wooten is definitely for you…and your dearly beloved.

The Biltmore Estate has been planning the largest exhibition in its historic gardens for almost a decade. And finally, last week, Chihuly at Biltmore opened with a mega installation of glass sculptures from the famous artist Dale Chihuly. Tens of thousands of glass pieces from all around the world reside in 14 locations around the Estate (which is the very first large-scale N.C. Chihuly installation).
The exhibition is up from now until Oct. 7th, free admission with a Biltmore day pass (and free for annual pass holders). Chihuly at Nightis a special, ongoing event where the glass sculptures are lit up, plus live music in the gardens + a wine bar. Tickets are $37.50 for kids + range from $65 – 75 for adults ($10 discount for pass holders).
Three new works were blown just for Biltmore, and 6 new compositions were put together.
This exhibit showcases the work of three leading fiber artists who explore Western North Carolina’s mountains, meadows and marshes using fabrics and fibers. Their quilted wall art offers a link to familiar images of this region, echoing the Arboretum’s role of connecting people with plants. Through their diverse styles, construction methods and subject matter, artists Mary Stori, Judy Simmons and Kate Weston add a contemporary twist to the area’s rich and storied quilt-making tradition. Their exhibit features pieces of varying sizes, from large focal-point wall hangings to medium-sized wall art to small work suitable for tabletop display. All pieces are for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The North Carolina Arboretum Society.
About the Artists
Mary Stori
From her home in Clyde, N.C., Mary creates botanical and organic themed art quilts using artisian-made, hand-dyed cotton, linen, silk and rayon fabrics. She also utilizes hand-felted and hand-dyed wool as rich backdrops, offering texture and depth to her work. Bead embellishment is another one of her trademarks. Learn more on her website.
Judy Simmons
Judy creates her own fabric in her Fletcher, N.C. studio using surface design techniques, including fabric marbling, dyeing, color lifting and silk screening. Much of the imagery in her work utilizes her own photography printed on fabric. To learn more about Judy, please click here.
Kate Weston
From her home in Statesville, N.C., Kate focuses on the creation of complex cloth through the application of dye, paint and embellishment, such as fabric overlay or manipulation and the application of non-fiber materials. Coupled with skillful machine quilting, Kate’s works create and stunning interplay of color and texture. Please visit Kate’s website to learn more.

Many other organizations and galleries across WNC are also hosting glass-focused events, programs and exhibitions during the region’s Summer of Glass celebration, which coincides with a new exhibition at Biltmore of multi-media artist Dale Chihuly’s monumental glass sculptures.
