Learn the basics of colorwork in this two hour workshop! This workshop comes with a copy of the beautiful Foliole Cowl pattern by Christina Danaee, and 20% off our Ranger DK yarns. During the workshop, you’ll work through as much of the Foliole cowl as possible with guidance from the teacher, Emilie Gate. By the end of the class you’ll have the skills you’ll need to finish your cowl on your own, and the skills for any other pattern that involves colorwork.
About the teacher
Emilie works for Echoview selling their Yarn to Shops around the country. She has been knitting for several years and loves to help others learn how to knit, grow in their skills, and be stretched in new ways. When she isn’t knitting she can be found with her four boys or raising their herd of Miniature Dairy Goats on their Mini Farm in Candler.
Come learn the basics of felt painting and needle techniques to create 2D felt wall hangings. We will demonstrate how to create wet felted batts as a base, the quickest way to start a 2D project. Then, we will needle tack merino, alpaca, angora and other types of wool to create a 2D painting of whatever your heart desires. Finally, we’ll run them through Echoview’s Felt Loom to quickly finish the project, a process that would take hours needling by hand! All supplies are included, but feel free to bring your own wool or roving if you’d like.
About the teacher:
Yoko is a felter, spinner, knitter, gardener and mother to many rabbits and ducks, including 8 Angoras who share their wool for lots of fiber fun. She has been an artist her entire life and rarely follows a given pattern, preferring to find a medium and make it her own. Working at Echoview with all the roving around her, she took up felt work and hasn’t looked back. She’s constantly on the lookout for new fibers, techniques and creative friends – whether chatting at craft night or cruising the isles of local craft events. She has taught a variety of art mediums to makers from babies to hospice patients over the years and enjoys bringing out the creative side in everyone!
What: Public informational meeting and casual Anniversary Reception, with speakers on a wide range of environmental justice and water issues, including coal ash, safe and affordable water for low income residents, testing wells for contamination, missed opportunities to stop GenX pollution, and climate and Environmental Justice. Anniversary cake and refreshments will be served.

celebration of local art when once a year artists across Henderson County
open their doors and invite the public behind the scenes to experience
their creative process. Meet the artists and see their latest work; find
special buys; view demonstrations of their craft. Original works in painting,
sculpture, pottery, jewelry, fiber arts, metal arts, woodworking and glass will
be offered by over 60 artists in 40 studios in the towns of Flat Rock, Tuxedo,

You can help fill it—at MANNA FoodBank’s 18th annual Empty Bowls!
Empty Bowls is a unique and memorable event that celebrates community, art, and collaboration, while bringing awareness to the very real problem of hunger in Western North Carolina.
Guests select a bowl hand-made by local artisans and enjoy a seasonal meal of delicious soups, breads, desserts, and coffee. To complement the experience, local musicians provide fabulous live music. The souvenir bowl guests take home reminds them of the many WNC families that are currently struggling with hunger.
Almost every part of the event is donated, including the event space, food, beverages, and local pottery and art. This allows MANNA to use event proceeds for our food distribution and nutrition programs, which serve the more than 100,000 food-insecure households across our 16-county service area. Every dollar raised can help provide food for 3.5 meals!
Adult Ticket: $40 (includes a meal and a souvenir bowl handmade by a local artist)
Child Ticket, ages 12 and under: $10 (includes a meal and a souvenir kid’s bowl)

In 2019 The Utopian Seed Project took on a wide range of crop and variety trials, including an
entirely different 50 varieties of okra to 2018. Those varieties plus Swofford’s four, will form the
54 variety taste test. “We don’t think there has ever been an okra taste test on this scale,” says
Smith. “It’s going to be pretty exciting.” By collaborating with another food-focused organization,
The People’s Seed, the okra taste test is able to reach the chef network of the Triangle area,
another food-rich region of North Carolina.
Will the same varieties perform well in all three regions? Will the Turkish variety win for a
second year running? Can anyone imagine so much okra in one place?
All these questions and more will be answered on Sept 25.

Hickory Nut Gap Farm and the National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC) have joined together to celebrate all those interested in pursuing a career in agriculture.
On Thursday, September 26th from 5pm to 9pm, all new and future farmers are invited to spend the evening enjoying a buffet of farm-raised bbq, drinks, and fellowship. To start the evening, attendees will enjoy a guided square dancing icebreaker, followed by live music by Bull Moose Party and finally an update from the NYFC on their tireless efforts on capitol hill lobbying for young farmers.
“With the average age of farm owners in the U.S. approaching 60 and all of the food-related challenges ahead of us in the coming decades it can often feel hopeless and daunting to be involved with agriculture in the 21st century. But the truth is, there is hope, there are more and more young and beginning farmers joining our food system every day; but with such a decentralized form of production, these young farmers often don’t have many options to connect with each other, network, and feel encouraged,” says Hickory Nut Gap farm director, Asher Wright. “Here at HNG we have a great event space and kitchen with the capacity to host an event, and so we are very excited to welcome the next generation of producers to our farm to connect with each other and be assured that nobody is alone in this industry.”

“Minimalia: The Commonwealth of Sentiments.” is a new photographic exhibit of dream-like, surreal experimentations and poetry by Oğuz Erdur, assistant professor of anthropology at UNC Asheville, from Istanbul, Turkey. The collection of micro-photography images were made with a lensbaby lens. Lensbaby is a line of camera lenses for SLR cameras that combine a simple lens with a bellows or ball and socket mechanism for use in special-effect photography, often used in selective focus photography and bokeh effects. Featuring a hybrid collection of poems, photographic close-ups and prose reflections, the exhibition centers on themes of existential angst and the quest for meaning. Erdur will also be reading his poetry at the exhibit opening.
Joey Sheehan began his study in clay over 14 years ago when he received a BFA in ceramics from Virginia Tech. He completed a 2 year residency at the Odyssey Center and another year there as the studio technician, and has been making pots in Western North Carolina ever since. Sheehan is extremely interested in classical shapes and forms but with a contemporary look at surface. He works to build a relationship between the shape, function, and surface of each piece while also telling a story of the firing process. His work has been shown all over the eastern US and he is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the Piedmont Craftsman.
