White Flower Meditation led by Mani
Jul 20 @ 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Share Your Journey Counseling

Please join us as we learn about and practice the White Flower Meditation, as taught by Amma, known as the Hugging Saint.

The purpose of Amma’s White Flower Meditation is two-fold: To strengthen ourselves in health, peace and harmony and to spread light and positive energy to all corners of the earth.

We will begin with some instructions, as it will be easier to know the visualizations of the meditation ahead of time. A 10 minute breathing, grounding and calming practice and quiet time followed by a recording with Amma speaking and her Swami guiding the White Flower Mediation.

After the meditation, we will have time for sharing. Feel free to bring some treats to share but it is not necessary.

Aloha and Great Blessings, Mani

This event is free, however please keep this in mind: Being a meetup host costs $198.00 a year and we ask for donations to help cover these costs, so that these events can continue to take place for all of us. Thank you in advance for helping.

MIAMI GOLD

Miami Gold is based in Asheville, NC. The power trio have played with respected musicians and producers in a variety of live settings and recording studios.

Miami Gold is led by Joel Schantz, a guitarist, singer, and songwriter who fuses smart phrasing and intensity to create an emotionally and sonically engaging guitar style. As a frontman, Joel’s conversational musings and deadpan humor quickly establish a rapport with audiences. Joel has played with some of the luminaries of the rock world, as well as recorded 2 albums under the tutelage of legendary producer Tom Dowd (Allman Bros, Eric Clapton, Eagles, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Thelonious Monk, etc.) Joel’s brother, Ari, is the band’s drummer. His thunderous drive, skillful technique, keen sense of song construction, and attuned ear are a rare combination among rock drummers. After the meeting there is live acoustic music so stay and enjoy the vibe with your new friends! Put us down on your calendar for every third Third Thursday!

The first book is going to be called Disability Visibility.

Synopsis from the back cover: One in five people in the United States lives with a disability. Some disabilities are visible, others less apparent—but all are underrepresented in media and popular culture. Now, just in time for the thirtieth anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, activist Alice Wong brings together this urgent, galvanizing collection of contemporary essays by disabled people.

From Harriet McBryde Johnson’s account of her debate with Peter Singer over her own personhood to original pieces by authors like Keah Brown and Haben Girma; from blog posts, manifestos, and eulogies to Congressional testimonies, and beyond: this anthology gives a glimpse into the rich complexity of the disabled experience, highlighting the passions, talents, and everyday lives of this community. It invites readers to question their own understandings. It celebrates and documents disability culture in the now. It looks to the future and the past with hope and love. Intro to Next.js
Jul 20 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Biltmore Career Center

Join us July 20th for an introduction to Next.js.

What is Next.js? Let’s ask nextjs.org:

Used by some of the world’s largest companies, Next.js enables you to create full-stack web applications by extending the latest React features, and integrating powerful Rust-based JavaScript tooling for the fastest builds.

In this session, you will learn the pros and cons of using Next.js along with examples of what you can accomplish using the framework. We will give an overview of how a Next.js application is structured, demonstrate a production Next.js website, and build a Next.js website from a starter template.

Big thanks to the Biltmore HR Department who graciously gifted us use of their well-equipped training space. Biltmore Career Center is centrally located with tons of parking, ample snacks/beverages, and reliable Wi-Fi.

As you may know, Asheville JavaScript Meetup has been dormant since January 2020 and recently changed leadership. This session, if successful, will likely lead to more events. The JS world is too exciting to sit by idly – let’s have some fun! 🎉

Your hosts are Jennifer Hill, Front-End Web Developer, and Chad Evans, Web Enthusiast.

Note that Asheville JavaScript Meetup is an independent meetup group. Future events may be held at a different location with different sponsors.

GIVEAWAY: Two (2) Biltmore tickets will be awarded to two (2) lucky attendees – only if you RSVP and are present for the session. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

The creation of innovative, yet, traditionally steeped music is an ever elusive goal in this day and age. The Virginia Dare Devils’ mission to do just that is most certainly well under way. From their beginnings three years ago in the acoustic music hotbed of Asheville, NC, this group of friends has embarked upon an organic musical journey rooted in traditional melody and tone layered with improvisational solos and textured rhythms reminiscent of jams of the sixties, while tipping the cap to 30’s swing bands. Add gritty arrangements, plus big family-style vocals and you’re in for the real thing.

Big Freedia: Central City Tour
Jul 20 @ 7:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

– AGES 18+

BIG FREEDIA
New Orleans icon Big Freedia is dreaming of the future of bounce music. Over the past two decades, the Queen of Bounce has expanded the booming sounds of Southern rap on a string of high-energy, twerk-inducing projects, while showcasing her inimitable charisma on blockbuster hits by Drake and Beyoncé. But where some might rest on their laurels, the Queen Diva still sees plenty of opportunity to expand her empire.

“Bounce has been through many iterations—from Triggerman to Sissy to Cash Money Bounce—but my new single is something I call Bigga Bounce,” says Freedia, heralding this new chapter for the genre. “Welcome to Central City, y’all, where I pay homage to my city, my roots, hip-hop, and to the art of creating a new sound.”

The tireless mogul broke into television in 2013 with Fuse’s Big Freedia Bounces Back, released her memoir Big Freedia: God Save The Queen Diva in 2015, launched a cannabis line called Royal Bud in 2022, and is on track to open her very own Hotel Freedia in New Orleans in 2024.

In addition to promoting Central City Freestyle, and $100 Bill Ft. Ciara, the Queen Diva is gearing up to launch a new original series, Big Freedia Means Business, which will explore her prolific entrepreneurial endeavors. Visuals and even more new music are already in the works too. But in the greater scheme of things, Big Freedia hopes her voice and platform as an unapologetically authentic artist will inspire, especially at a time when the rights of LGBTQ+ people are under constant attack.

“We gotta keep pushing, and I hope this album speaks to my community and everyone who feels they don’t have a voice,” she adds. “I am living proof of why you don’t let yourself get dragged down. We keep going. We keep fighting.”
