In the years following, they have expanded from Asheville NC, and regularly appear in Knoxville TN, Greenville SC, and other cities and mountain towns surrounding their home base.

JIM SWAYZEE
Jim Swayzee moved to Asheville in 2016 and has been performing in the WNC area ever since then. He writes melody-driven original folk rock songs and draws his influence from classic rock songwriters such as Neil Young, Jackson Browne, and even Tom Waits.

ANNIE MYERS

Annie Myers is a singer/songwriter with roots in folk country and classic americana music. Influenced by musical pillars such as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, and John Prine, Annie’s music reflects her love of storytelling through song.  Annie moved to Asheville via Philadelphia in 2012 and has been performing solo, as well as alongside Erin Kinard in folk rock duo “Rooster” ever since.

TRAIL RUNNING FILM FESTIVAL

The Trail Running Film Festival presented by Tera Pruett of Unstoppable Strength, Endurance & Adventure Coaching is back for 2024, and is making its way to Asheville, the southeast’s hub for trail running, hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, and outdoor adventure.

This event promises an inspiring night filled with films, community, and a celebration of the trail and ultra community. Independent filmmakers from around the world will showcase their work by bringing stories of adventure, inclusivity, wilderness, art, and diversity to the forefront.

The festival aims to capture the spirit of the trail running community, showcasing narratives from various perspectives. From those at the back of the pack to the party pacers, from individuals defying odds to those overcoming obstacles, and from record-breakers to those aiming for the fastest known time — the festival covers a spectrum of stories that resonate with the EVERYDAY ATHLETE.

Attendees can expect a diverse range of films that highlight the unique and inspiring journeys of individuals from all walks of life. Whether you’re a seasoned trail runner or someone just beginning their outdoor adventure, this festival provides a platform for everyone to connect, be inspired, and celebrate the incredible stories within the trail running community.

When Jeremy Pinnell released OH/KY in the summer of 2015 to stunned acclaim, it felt like an entire career compressed into one knock-out album. Hailed as, a “Mind-blowingly good” (Greg Vandy/KEXP) “ ”tutorial on classic country music” (Popmatters), Pinnell’s debut immediately differentiated as authentic and unflinching. Dogged touring through Europe and the States and celebrated radio sessions followed, cementing Pinnell’s position as a no-fuss master of his craft.

His 2017 album, Ties of Blood and Affection presented a canny lateral move. Instead of doubling down on the stark themes and values of his debut, the sophomore album found Pinnell finding comfort in his own skin, achieving the redemption only hinted at in his previous batch of haunted songs.

If the third time’s a charm, Pinnell is all shine and sparkle on Goodbye LA. Produced by Texan Jonathan Tyler, the tunes buff the wax and polish the chrome on Country music’s deeper roots. Rooted in his steady acoustic guitar, Pinnell’s songs are shot through with honest and classic elements. The rhythm section, all snap and shuffle, finds purpose in well-worn paths.  The pedal steel and Telecaster stingers arrive perfectly on cue, winking at JP’s world-wise couplets .  Here slippery organ insinuates gospel into the conversation.  You can feel the room breathe and get a sense of these musicians eyeballing each other as their performances are committed to tape.  And through it all comes this oaken identity, the devastating centerpiece of his work.  Honest and careworn, Jeremy’s voice can touch on wry, jubilant, and debauched – all in a single line.  At his best, Jeremy Pinnell chronicles the joy and sorrow of being human, which is the best that anyone could do.

TIME SAWYER

Time Sawyer’s name reflects the pull between the past and the future. The character Tom Sawyer evokes the rural background and love of home that the band shares. Time is a muse for songwriting; it’s the thread that runs through life, bringing new experiences and giving us a sense of urgency, while still connecting us with our past.

The folk-rock band has performed on the stages of some of the Southeast’s most iconic festivals, including Merlefest, Floydfest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Albino Skunk Music Festival, and Carolina in the Fall. They’ve shared bills with American Aquarium, John Craigie, Hiss Golden Messenger, Langhorne Slim, John Moreland, Steep Canyon Rangers, The Wood Brothers, Susto, and many more.

2024 Spring Litter Sweep

Participate in the 2024 Spring Sweep!

The 2024 Spring Litter Sweep is taking place April 13-27. Traditionally scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September, Litter Sweep is the N.C. Department of Transportation’s biannual statewide roadside litter removal initiative. Residents throughout the state participate in local efforts to help clean up North Carolina’s roadways.

We invite you to lend a hand and enjoy physical and mental health benefits such as feeling a sense of accomplishment, getting exercise, enjoying the fresh air, meeting new people, and all that comes with living in cleaner surroundings.

Be sure to bring sunscreen, water, comfortable shoes, and work clothes that can get dirty. Gloves, safety vests, bags, and tools are provided.

How to Participate in Clean-Up Opportunities

Organize a DIY Community Clean Up

  • Asheville GreenWorks supports public clean ups as well as DIY cleanups, providing residents with supplies for roadside and neighborhood cleanups. More information regarding these events can be found on their website.

Auditions: Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps

Mainstage Auditions

Auditions are held over two nights, and you may choose either night to audition. Please fill out the Audition Form (per show) to secure an audition time. Walk-ups will be asked to fill out the audition form on site and will need to wait until the next available time slot.

For musical auditions: In general, come dressed to dance and prepared to sing 16 bars (30-45 seconds) of a musical theatre song, in the style of the musical. Depending on the show, you may be asked to bring sheet music to be played by an accompanist or you may be asked to bring a backing track (like a karaoke track on your phone) to play on a provided speaker. Please read each show’s audition requirements.

For non-musical auditions: Generally, you will be asked to memorize and prepare a monologue or to read pages from the script in front of the director, the stage manager, and another reader. Please read each show’s audition requirements.

About Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps: Prepare yourself for a whirlwind adventure of suspense and comedy with Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. This fast-paced play is a unique adaptation of the 1935 classic Hitchcock thriller film, infused with a healthy dose of Monty Python-style humor. The story revolves around the central character, Richard Hannay, who inadvertently gets tangled in a mysterious web of spies, murder, and love. Remarkably, the entire riveting narrative unfolds through the talents of just four actors, who collectively portray over 150 characters, masterfully switching roles with lightning speed. Brimming with clever references to Hitchcock’s filmography, wry British humor, and ingeniously crafted theatrical inventiveness, The 39 Steps promises a rollicking evening of entertainment that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats.

Code Purple: Emergency Weather Program

As cold weather moves into the region, many in our community turn their thoughts to the unhoused population and the additional hardships they face during winter months.

One of the most immediately responsive assets is the Code Purple program.

Driven by community organizations, this effort provides emergency shelter to people experiencing homelessness during freezing weather.

 

The Code Purple program kicks off this year on October 15, 2023 and runs through April 30, 2024. During that time members of the Homeless Coalition will determine when a Code Purple will go into effect. You can find details about the program in the Code Purple Manual

 

Exciting news about the expansion of services this year.

 

When a Code Purple Can be called. 

Code Purple emergency shelters and services are typically available at 32 degrees or below. A Code Purple may also be enacted this year when temperatures are 33-40 degrees with precipitation.

 

Additional Beds

ABCCM has 75 beds available between their Veterans Restoration Quarters and Transformation Village sites.

The Salvation Army will also participate this year, adding 16 new Code Purple beds for  people who are unhoused to seek shelter in extreme weather

A recorded message will be available at 828.398.6011 confirming that Code Purple is operational and providing information about shelter locations.

How is the City continuing to support this community-driven initiative?

  • The City of Asheville, once again, agreed to fund 50-thousand dollars of the Code Purple from this year in their annual budget.
  • ART buses will continue to over free rides to shelters for those in needs
  • Community Responders will assist in the transport of individuals on an “as needed” basis
  • The marquee at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center will post messaging indicating when a Code Purple will be or is in effect.

If you need to request supplies for the same or next day, please call 828-254-1776.

Organizing a litter cleanup with your friends, neighbors, co-workers, or other community members is easier than you may think! Asheville GreenWorks provides cleanup supplies and safety information, and will coordinate trash pick up as needed. Available supplies include safety vests, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, and SHARPs containers (upon request).

Please review the attached documents and contact [email protected] with any questions. Your supplies will be available for pickup on the date you’ve requested at Asheville GreenWorks’ office at 2 Sulphur Springs Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

Get Involved: Join the 911 Strategic Visioning Work Group

Buncombe County’s Consolidated 911 Center is looking to complete the membership of the Strategic Visioning Workgroup with a community member at large. As part of our ongoing commitment to service to the community the Strategic Visioning Workgroup will meet quarterly to provide:

  • Provide feedback on various reports, studies, plans, etc. prepared for the Department of Public Safety Communications; and
  • Discuss and evaluate public safety communications operational performance, protocols and procedures that support an effective 911 center.
  • Provide feedback for any matter of relevance requested by County Management.

The CSC membership includes:

Representatives from all of the agencies that we serve, as well as leadership from the Public Safety Communications department and one community member at large.

Mile High Swinging Bridge

One of the top highlights and memories of visits to Grandfather Mountain nature park is walking across the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge. Since 1952, visitors have “oohed” and “aahed” at the bridge’s 360-degree panoramic views. America’s highest suspension footbridge gives easy access to the spectacular views atop Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak, elevation 5,305 feet.

The 228-foot suspension bridge spans an 80-foot chasm at more than one mile in elevation (hence the name!). To reach the Mile High Swinging Bridge, drive the two-mile, winding scenic road up the mountain to the summit parking area by the Top Shop. Climb 50 stairs adjacent to the parking area or inside the Top Shop to reach the short pathway to the bridge. Also, an elevator in the Top Shop takes you to the third floor for a level walk to the bridge.

Top Shop

Located adjacent to the Bridge, the Top Shop features a gift shop, snacks, restrooms, elevator and second-floor exhibition area. Also get the latest park information and trail maps. Read more.

Accessibility

Inside the Top Shop, an elevator makes the Mile High Swinging Bridge accessible to people with mobility challenges, including those in wheelchairs. From the Top Shop, there is a paved 50-yard path to the bridge. Read more about our accessibility.

Tickets & Hours

Walking across the Mile High Swinging Bridge is included in your Grandfather Mountain admission ticket that includes many other things to do in our nature park. Buy tickets online and book a reservation time to enter the park. You do not need a separate reservation for the bridge. It’s open, weather permitting, every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. See hours.

Nearby Hiking Trails

Trailheads to many of the Grandfather Mountain hiking trails are located near the Swinging Bridge. In fact, the 0.4 mile Bridge Trail takes you beneath the bridge, starting from the Black Rock parking area just below the summit. For details on our nearby trails, go to our Hiking Guide.

Bridge Tips & Tidbits

  • Does it really swing? Very little — unlike the original one. Today’s bridge is made of steel and reinforced with cables and springs. It has railings on the sides to ensure safety.
  • We suggest you wear rubber-soled shoes and walk with care when crossing the rocks on the far side of the bridge.
  • If heights give you pause, you can still enjoy Blue Ridge Mountain views from the ground before you reach the bridge and even from the parking area.
  • Due to periodic extreme weather conditions at the bridge, it closes when there is area lightning, high wind or icy conditions.
  • The official U.S. Weather Service Reporting Station atop the Mile High Swinging Bridge has provided daily weather observations since 1955. The temperature is usually 10 to 20 degrees cooler than in the flatlands you see below. It’s also one of the windiest locations in North Carolina, with a 124-mph record set in winter 2019. Learn more about our weather.
  • Pets are allowed on the bridge if well behaved and on a leash.
  • Photographs and videos to remember your visit are encouraged. Be mindful of sharp drop-offs along the Linville Peak ridge. Drones are not allowed. See our photography policies.
  • The Singing Bridge? When the wind blows, the Mile High Swinging Bridge “sings” in the same way as a harmonica.
  • In April through October, join Grandfather’s expert naturalists by the Bridge for Interpretive Talks about the our unique weather, climate, flora and fauna. Read more.
  • Need driving directions? The address for Grandfather Mountain’s entrance gate is 2050 Blowing Rock Highway, Linville, NC 28646 (click link for Google Maps). There are no shuttles, so you must have your own vehicle to explore our nature park. No RVs longer than 28 feet in length or hinged vehicles are allowed through the Entrance Gate. See detailed directions.

Mile High Swinging Bridge History

Former North Carolina Tourism Director Charles J. Parker coined the name “Mile High Swinging Bridge” at the Bridge’s dedication in 1952. The term “mile high” refers to the structure’s elevation above sea level (5,280 feet). The term “swinging” refers to the fact that suspension bridges are free to sway.

The original 1952 bridge was designed by Charles Hartmann Jr. of Greensboro, N.C. It was fabricated in Greensboro and then reassembled on top of the Mountain. Erecting the bridge took three weeks, a process slowed by inclement weather created by a hurricane off the North Carolina coast. Cost was $15,000. It was dedicated on Sept. 2, 1952 by North Carolina Gov. William B. Umstead.

The bridge was rebuilt in 1999 using the original towers. The cables, floor boards and side rails were all replaced using galvanized steel. One of the main advantages of the modern building materials is that they do not have to be painted. Now, Grandfather Mountain employees will not have to hang out over the gorge to paint the span. It was redesigned by Sutton, Kennerly & Associates Engineering of Asheville, N.C., and rebuilt by Taylor & Murphy Construction Company of Asheville. The cost of rebuilding was $300,000.

Tickets for our 2024 Table for Three raffle will go on sale March 15, 2024! Table for Three is MANNA’s partnership with the Asheville-area’s nationally-recognized independent restaurant scene. You could win an incredible grand prize: a meal for two at 52 of the Asheville-area’s top local restaurants. That’s a year’s worth of dining out at a value of more than $3,000!

The best part is that each ticket supports MANNA’s vital work to provide food to Western North Carolina neighbors struggling to make ends meet. With every ticket sold, we can provide enough food to feed one person a daily meal … for more than an entire year. That’s why we call it Table for Three!

TICKETS ARE $124

Table for Three raffle tickets are $124 each. This is a very intentional ticket price: $124 is what it costs MANNA to feed one person a meal a day for more than one year. With every ticket purchased, you help set the table for a neighbor facing food insecurity.

THE GRAND PRIZE

The winner will receive gift certificates to 52 different Asheville-area restaurants. The gift certificates are transferrable, so you can share them with friends and family, give them as client gifts, or, of course, use them all yourself!

Gift certificates do not include tax or gratuity and cannot be used for alcohol. Some restaurants may limit use during holidays or special events. Certificates can be used for dine-in or carry-out service in cases where the restaurant offers the carry-out option.

THE WINNER

A single winner will be drawn via livestream on MANNA’s Facebook page on or before Friday, May 15. All raffle ticket holders will be notified in advance of the exact day and time of the drawing. Ticketholders do not need to be tuned into the livestream to win. The winner will be asked to come to MANNA (on a day and time following the drawing, and agreed upon by the winner and MANNA), to claim their prize. And then … let the dining begin!

THE FINE PRINT

Tickets are $124 each. The drawing will take place on/before May 15, 2024, via livestream on MANNA’s Facebook page. Only 500 tickets will be sold. This is a fundraising project, and all ticket sales benefit MANNA FoodBank. Tickets may be sold to MANNA employees, board members, and other affiliated individuals. The Table for Three Raffle is open only to those who are 18 years of age or older as of March 14, 2023, and who possess a valid government-issued ID. Ticketholders do not need to be tuned in to the livestream to win. According to Internal Revenue Service regulations, no portion of the raffle ticket purchase qualifies as a tax-deductible donation.

Each year, AgSouth Farm Credit supports non-profit organizations and farmers markets with grants of up to $5,000 to help in their endeavors and to further the future of agriculture in our region of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Grant Mission & Objectives

The AgSouth Growing Our Communities Grant’s mission is to build strong partnerships and alliances, leveraging the resources within our grant program to preserve and promote the farmer, the family, and our communities. The grant has three main objectives:

  • Invest in the future of agriculture.
  • Enhance and impact the quality of life in the AgSouth territory.
  • Be recognized as a leading corporate citizen in the AgSouth territory.

Applications

The AgSouth Growing Our Communities Grant operates on an application-based grant system. Grants will be awarded for up to $5,000 per organization per year. To be considered for funding, organizations’ values and purpose must align with the grant program’s mission. Applications must be submitted online. You will be asked to attach a copy of your organization’s W9 to the application prior to submission. Incomplete applications cannot be accepted. Please make sure you complete all fields prior to submission.

Project Guidance
As part of the application, organizations must submit a project the grant will help fund. Examples of previously funded projects include but are not limited to:

•    Providing farmers market programming for children
•    Purchasing fans for a livestock arena to help cool the animals
•    Developing a comprehensive chick hatching program to give tools and resources to those wanting to raise backyard flocks
•    Opening a demonstration farm in conjunction with a local school district
•    Purchasing grain bin rescue equipment for fire and rescue teams
•    Funding a bee-keeping education program for vulnerable youths
•    Purchasing an irrigation system at a local Farmers Market
•    Expanding a local church garden space and adding fencing
•    Hosting an annual agricultural event
•    Purchasing a cargo trailer to transport livestock equipment
•    Building a school greenhouse

Eligibility Considerations

Grants will be considered for programs only in the 147 counties and geographic areas where AgSouth Farm Credit conducts business. Grants will only be awarded to non-profit organizations and farmers markets and will not be awarded to individuals or private farms.

Funding Cycle

Grant applications will be accepted from April 1 to June 30th, 2024. Proposals will be reviewed and grants will be awarded in Nov-Dec of 2024. Funds awarded maybe utilized by recipients during the 2025 calendar year.

The 2025 Grant Application period is now open. Applications can be received from April 1 to June 30th, 2024.

The Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning: adultone-week courses

Want to learn how to process old clothing into pulp to make paper? Weave on a loom using local fiber? Forage and identify wild mushrooms?

The Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning at Warren Wilson College is offering a full lineup of one-week courses for adult learners this May and July. These intensive short courses take place on the college campus (701 Warren Wilson Rd.), and are taught by Warren Wilson faculty and staff, local artisans and craft folk. Course topics include painting, podcasting, knitting, film making, natural history, fiber arts, birding, mushroom foraging, and fine woodworking, among many others.

“The Mountain Institute for Lifelong Learning is a vessel for community building, exploration, adventure, place-based learning, and the ignition of new passion for lifelong learners,” said Anna Welton, associate dean of community and global engagement at Warren Wilson. “These courses highlight the unique strengths of Warren Wilson College, which has been a hub of experiential learning since its founding as the Asheville Farm School in 1894.”

The Racial Justice Challenge

The action component of UJJI, the YWCA Racial Justice Challenge, is also returning this April. The Racial Justice Challenge will begin this year on April 1 and conclude on April 29, and will focus on Bodily Autonomy, Women’s Financial Empowerment, Gun Violence, and Transportation. The YWCA Racial Justice Challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership. The Challenge works to foster personal reflection, encourage social responsibility, and motivate participants to identify and act on ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.

For four weeks, daily challenge activities (reading an article, listening to a podcast, reflecting on personal experience, etc.) are posted in the Challenge app and on the website, allowing participants to connect with one another, discover how racial and social injustice impact our communities, and identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination.   • Responses to this Call for Artists (CFA) will be reviewed by an Artist Selection Panel and up to three semi-finalists will be asked to submit proposals. Semi-finalists will be paid a $500 honorarium.

New Park Pavilion Reservation Software

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is announcing the launch of its new online reservation system for park pavilions.

ACTIVENet, the new online reservation system, allows for a hassle-free user experience for Buncombe County park visitors. With just a few clicks, visitors can make and cancel reservations from the comfort of their home, in addition to checking real-time availability of the pavilions. Park pavilions are located at Lake Jullian, Charles D. Owen, and the Buncombe County Sports Park. Field rental is also available through this new portal.

Key takeaways of the new reservation system include: 

Seamless Interface: The user-friendly layout of the reservation system allows for hassle-free bookings and cancelations.

Real-time Park Pavilion Availability: Users are able to check the availability of the park pavilions at their favorite park, and on their preferred date and time.

Secure Payment: ACTIVENet’s secure payment portal ensures data protection and encryption with Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliant technology.

Email confirmations: Once a reservation is made or canceled, users will receive a confirmation email with the details of their booking.
