Calendar of Events

This joint concert, Music Leads the Way, will celebrate the women’s suffrage movement, and feature the University Chorale and Reuter Center Singers, both directed by Chuck Taft, and the student musicians of UNC Asheville’s Wind Ensemble, directed by Fletcher Peacock, the university’s director of instrumental studies. The concert takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Lipinsky Auditorium, free and open to everyone.

Visitor Parking on the UNC Asheville Campus – Visitors may park in faculty/staff and non-resident lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.

UNC Asheville Department of Music Joint Concert with Reuter Center Singers

The UNC Asheville Department of Music in collaboration with the Reuter Center Singers presents Music Leads The Way, a concert honoring the enduring spirit of those who stood up and demanded the right to vote for women.  Music has always been an integral part of how we communicate with one another.  Whether marching, protesting, gathering in homes or reminiscing, songs like Walk Together Children, How Can I Keep from Singing, and March for the Women have knit the community together around a common cause.  Not only is the cause of Women’s Suffrage highlighted, but the role music plays in shaping our common experience.

The concert features the UNC Asheville Wind Ensemble, University Chorale, and Reuter Center Singers.

WHAT IT IS… An experience unlike anything you have ever dreamed imaginable. Described as “the closest to ABBA you’ll ever get,” Abba The Concert brings one of the 20^th century’s greatest pop groups back to life with their dazzling performances of all the groundbreaking Swedish act’s greatest hits, including “Mamma Mia,” “S.O.S,” “Waterloo,” “Dancing Queen,” and many more. They’ve sold out venues throughout the U.S. and achieved critical and popular acclaim for their energetic performances.

ABBA The Concert visits Brevard as part of its popular BMC Presents series, which brings a diverse range of non-classical artists to the festival stage. In 2020, the series will also host guitarist Bryan Sutton, folk legend Judy Collins, the bluegrass-inspired sounds of Woody Platt and Shannon Whitworth, and the return of award-winning banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck.

Works will inspire visitors to think about the beauty and fragility of plants and the natural world through various perspectives and printmaking techniques. All pieces are available for purchase and a portion of the sales will benefit The North Carolina Arboretum Society.

Founded in 2013, the Asheville Printmakers is an energetic group of artists dedicated to expressing ideas and imagery through the medium of print. The group encompasses a wide range of processes and content, including traditional methods, such as lithography, woodcut and screen printing, and contemporary photographic printing processes, such as carbon printing, platinum-palladium and photopolymer etching.

Described as “the pulse of the gods” by Hanover, Germany’s Neue Presse, YAMATO The Drummers of Japan erupt with a thunderous energy in their newest program, Jhonetsu, meaning “passion.” An Asheville fan favorite from seasons past, Yamato’s drummers modernize a centuries-old Taiko tradition to create a thrilling, high-energy ride full of heart-thumping rhythms and explosive beats. Yamato is internationally recognized for its exhilarating performances — described as “pure energy meets spiritual high,” by Edinburgh’s The Scotsman. Strength, spirit and sheer endurance shine through in Yamato’s drummers, whose passion for performance is both joyous and entertaining. This season, the drummers return with dozens of impressive instruments, including a massive, 1,100-pound Odaiko drum.

One morning near the end of August, Todd Snider was relaxing with a visitor on the back porch of his house just outside Nashville, drinking coffee and shooting the breeze while his dog, Cowboy Jim, took a nap nearby. After awhile, Snider said to his guest, “I’ve got an album’s worth of songs, and I think the songs are telling me to make a folk record.”

This was a surprising bit of news considering he had spent the last six years making rock albums of one kind or another. But Snider was feeling as if he had “maybe drifted too far from the shore.” He was feeling the pull to start over, to go back to what he was doing when he first began, to return to his roots as a folksinger.

If Snider needed any further evidence that was the direction he should pursue, he got it a half hour later. Back inside his home office, he checked his email and had one from his manager informing him he had just received an offer to play the 2019 Newport Folk Festival, an event he had never done.

Snider mentioned he had been listening to Woody Guthrie’s Library of Congress Recordings, then crossed the room to the turntable and put the needle down on side one of the record. “Woody Guthrie sometimes gets me reset on why you do a song, instead of how,” Snider explains of the man who has long been a touchstone for him. “When I was young, there was something about him that made me want to do it. So once or twice a year, I’ll go back to him, I’ll go back to the source.”

Guthrie famously had the words “This machine kills fascists” printed on his guitar, and on several of the songs on Snider’s new album, Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3, he squarely aims his guitar at the creeping fascism he sees in America. He had been wanting to make a political record since 2016, and although only half the songs lean in that direction, there is one constant throughout the album: a man, his guitar, and the truth.
