You’ve asked for it, and this session we are pleased to announce that a live model, figurative sculpture class will be returning to Odyssey ClayWorks! Working from a live model each week, students will hone their understanding of basic anatomy, proportions and the mechanics of movement in 3 dimensions. In this intermediate level class, we will use the potter’s wheel to create our forms, then focus on creating a unique surface that reflects your individuality. Through demonstrations and practice on our own test tiles, we will cover surface design including mishima (slip inlay), painting, and sgraffito carving. There will also be a heavy emphasis on handle making, as we seek to create forms that are both beautiful, and easy to use.

Would you rather spend your time doing just about ANYTHING else, even cleaning your studio? Then this is the class for you! Join Gabriel each Friday as he demystifies the techniques that will help you learn to love the glazing process, achieve more dynamic results, and get your work noticed. Looking for something fun and creative to do after school? In this 5-week class, kids will learn how to center clay on the potter’s wheel, pull up the walls and form a variety of shapes including bowls, cups and plates. A little hand building will be involved as we embellish our pottery with handles and decoration. At the end we will paint and glaze all of our creations making them food safe and durable. Class includes one on one instruction and the room to grow and experiment with clay. Tuition is $225.

Have you ever wanted to scale up the size of your work, but weren’t sure how? The sky is the limit in this class, so let’s go big! Join Mac McCusker as you learn to make large, freestanding floor vases with slabs and coils. You can then theme your piece by adding imagery to the leather hard clay. Demonstrations will include experimenting with carving, additive methods, surface design, sgraffito, underglazes, and the use of decals to achieve a visually stunning finished piece. All skill levels are welcome.

Surface Showcase: Newsprint Image Transfer with Molly Morning-glory

Join Molly Morning-glory this September to learn the secrets of this simple method for printing on clay! Molly will demonstrate how to use newsprint, underglaze, and slip to transfer your original imagery onto slabs, which can then be used to create any number of fantastic forms. We will have lots of time to practice, troubleshoot, and really get this method down. Bring sketches, inspirational quotes, and your favorite imagery to transfer. You’ll leave this weekend feeling inspired and motivated to make new work!

The Squirrel Nut Zippers began their musical journey in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990’s, as a musician’s escape from the cookie cutter world of modern rock radio at the time. Jimbo Mathus along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience. Between 1995-2000 the Squirrel Nut Zippers sold over three million albums. Their watershed album, Hot (1996) was recorded in the heat of New Orleans, fueled by a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old world jazz. This passion mixed with klezmer, blues and random bits of contemporary musical leanings became the bands signature style. At the time, there were few other bands inhabiting this space. The album would eventually break free of any “jazz” stereotypes and land on commercial radio, taking the band to remarkable heights for what was essentially an anti-establishment sound. Years later and through chronicles of every kind, the band has emerged from a lengthy recording hiatus, invigorated, invested, and rejuvenated. “It’s not a reunion, it’s a revival” has been the battle cry for Mathus since reforming the group in 2016. With an all-star cast of New Orleans musicians, the band breathed new life in to the old material, and inspired Mathus to return to the studio to reignite the band’s unique, enigmatic sound.

Join Asheville School for a dance technique and repertory workshop with NC Dance Festival Touring Artists Kristen Taylor Duncan and Megan Mazarick. Open to students in 8th – 12th grade.
The NC Dance Festival is an annual festival produced by the Dance Project that aims to support the creation of new choreography and the presentation of high-quality repertory, build and strengthen relationships between dance artists within North Carolina and provide access to and education about modern and contemporary dance to audiences and students. The festival presents work by some of the best modern dance choreographers in the state. This year, the festival has performances in Asheville, Durham, Charlotte and Greensboro.

In conjunction with the NC Dance Festival Asheville performances, the Asheville School Fine Arts Program will host “Moving with Makers,” a dance technique and repertory workshop featuring two NC Dance Festival artists on Saturday, September 29, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for area students in eighth through twelfth grades. The workshop will take place in the Walker Arts Center’s Graham Theater on Asheville School’s campus.

Students are invited to join NC Dance Festival artists Kristin Taylor Duncan and Megan Mazarick for an afternoon of movement. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a technique class and learn selected repertory while gathering insight into the artists’ choreographic approaches.

This class pairs with the NC Dance Festival’s opening show, which will take place at the BeBe Theater in Asheville on Friday, September 28. The show will feature the work of four NC Dance Festival artists, including Duncan and Mazarick. By pairing the workshop with the evening performances, students will gain a deeper perspective into the world of working artists.
