Lord Nelson is original rock and roll from the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Drawing on a past of camp fire sing a-longs, barn parties, metal thrashing, and Unitarian hymnals, Kai Crowe-Getty (guitar, vocals), Bram Crowe-Getty (drums), Henry Jones (trombone, vocals), Adam Wilson (bass), and Taylor Vactor (guitar) play music with a sense of tradition and belonging.

After several years of touring the country, playing clubs, barns, festivals, and everything in between, Lord Nelson set out to take a batch of road tested songs into the studio, with a very simple goal in mind: make a record that sounds like a bar show. Using a converted barn to track the record, guitarist Calloway Jones and collaborator Ivan Barry engineered two sessions across a few weeks, and the bones of an album were fitted into a suit.

Program Summary

Brevard Music Center (BMC) presents The Brevard Project: Reimagining the Future of Orchestral Programming, a six-day intensive seminar and think-tank on orchestral programming intended for professionals and influencers in the orchestral field. Presented by Brevard Music Center in partnership with Bard College, the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the South Dakota Symphony, the University of Michigan School of Music, and Project Director Joseph Horowitz, The Brevard Project takes place July 11-16, 2022. The central goals of The Brevard Project are to re-evaluate the artistic mission of the American orchestra and to share the skills needed to curate a more comprehensive, more inclusive American orchestral repertoire.

Curriculum

The Brevard Project: Reimagining the Future of Orchestral Programing complements Brevard Music Center’s week-long “Dvořák’s Prophecy” festival from July 11-16 and is inspired by Joseph Horowitz’s acclaimed new book Dvořák’s Prophecy and the Vexed Fate of Black Classical Music. Part think-tank, part seminar, this inaugural Project gathering equips practitioners and scholars alike to begin to answer questions about the dense nexus of culture and race, of historical, political, and moral reckonings surrounding the story of American orchestral music. The central goals of this program are to re-evaluate the artistic mission of the American orchestra and to share the skills needed to curate a more comprehensive, more inclusive American orchestral repertoire. The Brevard Project is designed for conductors, artistic administrators, executive directors, community engagement specialists, conservatory students, and engaged orchestra Board members.

Moving forward requires a fresh and closer look at our musical past – and to the lagging formation of an American symphonic canon. A new narrative of American classical music will be proposed that explores timely and topical issues that impact present and future orchestral programming. Why did our repertoire remain so stubbornly Eurocentric? What can we learn from this history? What can be mined from the treasure trove of long-hidden indigenous and Black music that can help to pave the future?

Classroom sessions will be highly interactive, drawing upon first-hand accounts of humanities-infused approaches to programming and community engagement. Topics of exploration include creating a “new paradigm” for American orchestral repertoire, rethinking the concert experience, and redefining the role of the music director. Participants will be challenged to envision programming and organizational initiatives to promote symphonic events grounded in the American experience, past and present.

Calling all garden lovers! The North Carolina Arboretum’s annual outdoor plant sale is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever. Revitalize your garden and home when you shop with us this spring.

On Friday and Saturday, May 27 and 28, we’ll be offering an assortment of plants grown right here in the Arboretum’s Production Greenhouse — including many of the beautiful plants featured in our seasonal landscapes. We’re also partnering with over 20 local growers and businesses for a tailgate-style market offering an even greater selection of annuals, perennials, natives, houseplants, art, planters and natural products. Come explore and shop the seasonal delights of spring to the sounds of live music. The sale will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. daily.

The Plant Sale and Vendor Market will take place outdoors in the second bay of the Arboretum’s main parking lot. The Arboretum’s standard $16 parking fee applies for all non-members.

Join the Chamber in kicking off GRINDfest 2022 hosted by Black Wall Street AVL!

BLACK WALL STREET AVL, a North Carolina based non-profit organization, is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual GRINDfest  – a celebration of local Black business and entrepreneurship.  Black Wall Street starts, grows and expands businesses, owners and networks to Honor History and Build Wealth together.

GRINDfest is a free, 4-day festival that celebrates Black Business and entrepreneurship. A block-party style event will take place on 8 River Arts Place! This includes a weekend full of music, games, live performance, food, local vendors + learning, employment and partnership opportunities. The goal of the festival is to highlight the progress made by people of color while also connecting folks in the community. A long weekend of fun and excitement.

The ribbon cutting/kickoff will feature Brian Hamilton, the founder of Brian Hamilton Foundation and its program, Inmates to Entrepreneurs. Come enjoy drinks, snacks and help kickoff this year’s festival.

At its core, The Moon and You is a charismatic husband-and-wife team. Melissa Hyman plays cello and bass, Ryan Furstenberg plays guitar and banjo. Whatever you might assume based on their gorgeous vocal blend and heartfelt lyrics, this ain’t your basic folk duo! With a rotating cast of talented friends to add unexpected instrumentation to their lineup, The Moon and You never plays the same show twice. This ever-evolving, expandable / collapsible model means the band is constantly reinventing itself in ways both surprising and satisfying.

Whatever the lineup, the Moon and You sound is always warm and inviting, atmospheric and playful. Both Hyman and Furstenberg are well developed songwriters with distinctive voices. Their songs range in style from classic to quirky. Lyrics-driven and intellectual with a keen ear for arrangement, they make music perfectly suited to a listening room or a pair of good headphones.

Since 2015 The Moon and You has put out two live EPs and four full-length studio albums. These range stylistically from summery rock and roll to dark and brooding, string-heavy arrangements to 2019’s Big Mystery, a sweet and earthy album of lullabies for people of all ages. Their most recent release Asteroids (digital only release, October 2020) really crystalizes their signature blend of sophisticated Americana, wild goofy romps and dreamy, psychedelic soundscapes. Furstenberg and Hyman are currently at work on a new, collaborative record with their besties in Fwuit! (former members of Moves, which was once a regionally beloved rock band called Holy Ghost Tent Revival), release date TBD. At once excitingly inventive and cozily familiar, the Moon & You never stops pushing the creative envelope and evolving a sound all their own.

Hailing from the gritty heart of the Industrial Revolution — Worcester, Massachusetts — the Ash & Eric (formerly ‘The Promise is Hope’) find consolation in discovering beauty from the challenges of being artists in the most stubbornly independent cities in the north east. Never shying away from life’s hard edges, their musings reflect the hope and pain we all experience sung in voices as vulnerable and honest as their lyrics. The pre-pandemic brain child of JP “Jangles” Pennington and Sean “Bubs” Richardson, BadRabbit has grown by leaps and bounds in 2021. After recruiting rhythm-section veterans Jes “Clutch” Bradley, Brent ‘Dr. Detroit’ Fleury, and finally Cate “Don’t Call Me ‘Kate’ ” Bradley on the keys, JP and Sean quickly dropped all their pandemic songs on the others, and faster than a jackrabbit on a date, they got to work. The result so-far has been some of the most wide-ranging, satisfying and just plain fun songs they’ve ever collaborated on.

Songwriter and Arkansas son JP is all about three things – family, music and “doing redneck shit”. Oh, and whiskey. And he’s good at all four of ‘em! Inspired by the Beatles at a young age, his knack for innovative and authentic lyrics is remarkable, by any standard.

Put on the musical path by his own percussionist father (Edward Bradley), drummer and Tallahassee boy Jes keeps the rest of these guys in line and on time. Onstage and off, he’s the kind of guy who’s always got your back. A huge Stevie Wonder fan, he’s never at a loss for coming up with a killer beat.

Avowed Deadhead and songwriter, Sean learned to smoke some mean-ass ribs in his hometown of Memphis, which is also where he learned to shred that guitar! His taste in and knowledge of reggae is impeccable, and for the record… he’s pretty damn good at whiskey too.

Hailing from the one and only Motown, Brent first picked up a bass at age 13 and quickly and unexpectedly turned into a Metalhead. Exposed daily, growing up to jazz, classical, big band, folk and even opera by his father, he has developed a style the band likes to call… “interesting”.

Armed with an incredible voice and a really cool-ass keyboard, nobody works harder than Cate. Blessed with a natural talent for vocal harmonies and an abiding love for Patsy Cline, she is the linchpin of BadRabbit. Not to mention she makes the best damn cheese dip you ever tasted!
