Music at the Vineyard – The Paper Crowns

Join us Friday, March 31 at Burntshirt Vineyards Tasting Room & Winery for live music at the vineyard with The Paper Crowns! The Paper Crowns are the multi-instrument, genre-crossing power duo of Spiro and Nicole Nicolopoulos. They are earning their reputation as the genuine article as a band on the cutting edge of modern roots music. Their musical chemistry is a gumbo of music genres. Mixing Appalachian folk, bluegrass, delta blues, acid rock, and more, they cook up a sound all their own. As a duo, they have a full band sound with drums, bass, guitars, banjos, and live looping, on-the-spot compositions. Their mix of modern and traditional performance creates a captivating intensity, yet always honors their intimacy and emotional rawness as a duo.

Their music has found placement in major network TV campaigns and online ad campaigns, including the Olympic Games and Pepsi. The Paper Crowns have been featured on various local and regional radio stations including Asheville FM, WBTV Charlotte, and 98.1 The River. The dynamic duo will be at Burntshirt Vineyards Hendersonville Friday from 3-6 PM. Come on down to the vineyard for an afternoon of amazing music, fabulous wines, and good times!

New Media Student Juried Exhibition Opening Reception and Keynote Address by Ayodamola Tanimowo Okunseinde

Visiting lecturer and New York-based new media artist Ayodamola Tanimowo Okunseinde will offer a keynote address for the opening reception of the 2023 New Media Student Juried Exhibition at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31 in Owen Hall, room 102.

Following Okunseinde’s keynote, the exhibition’s opening reception will take place at 5:45 p.m. in the New Media Gallery in Owen Hall.

Okunseinde, also known as ayo, is a Nigerian-American artist, designer and anthropologist living and working in New York. His works range from painting and speculative design to physically interactive works and wearable technology. His residency participation includes ITP’s S.I.R., IDEO’s Fortnight, The Laundromat Project and Eyebeam, and he has exhibited and presented at the 11th Shanghai Biennale, Tribeca Storyscapes and EYEO Festival, among others. He is the co-founder and director of the Iyapo Repository, a resource library that houses a collection of digital and physical artifacts created to affirm and project the future of people of African descent.

Visitors may park in faculty/staff and All Permit lots from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Visitors are not permitted to park in resident student lots at any time.

Songs From The Road Band is an Asheville, North Carolina based bluegrass supergroup featuring Mark Schimick (mandolin), Charles Humphrey III (bass), Sam Wharton (guitar), James Schlender (fiddle), and Gabe Epstein (banjo). The band takes flight with virtuosic  picking, singing, and grammy award winning songwriting.  Several of their most recent singles have gone to the top of the Bluegrass Today Grassicana chart. They have 6 studio albums available at all musical outlets.

Red Clay Revival
Born in the soul-basted countryside of Alabama, and brought to the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains to marinade and mature, Red Clay Revival delivers an experience that reshapes the parameters of “roots music” as its known. Songsmith extraordinaire, Doug McElvy, lays a solid foundation at the epicenter of Red Clay’s musical magnitude. McElvy’s skillful, heart-driven compositions are orbitted by the most noteabble and virtuosic musicians in the industy today. For the 2012 full-length debut, “Barefoot,” McElvy teams with resophonic guitar guru, Billy Cardine, as creative consultant and coproducer. The album features collaborations with decorated pros, such as; Keller Williams, Larry and Jenny Keel, and Tim carbone of Rail Road Earth. “Barefoot” received stellar reviews and accolades from industry peers, and listeners alike. The title track earned a spot on Relix Magazine’s widely distributed July-August 2012 compilation disc. For the 2014 EP, “Chilly,” McElvy and Cardine again pair in production, recruiting the talents of world class violinist, Casey Driessen, and beat master Jeff Sipe for backing elements. “Chilly” delivers nothing short of pure musical gold. Red Clay Revival’s powerful live performance harnesses an energy that electrifies any room, leaving audiences with an embedded musical experience.

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits are much more than a professional hockey franchise playing in Upstate South Carolina; it is truly Greenville’s hockey team. Formerly known as the Road Warriors, the club rebranded to the Swamp Rabbits on August 26, 2015 in an effort to really ingrain itself in the fabric of the community. The name is inherently Greenville – specific to the city and unique in the sports world.

It’s the electrifying energy and unstoppable passion of Swamp Rabbits fans inside The Well combined with the award-winning game presentation that make attending a Swamp Rabbits game the BEST fan experience in the ECHL! Hendersonville Theatre is dedicated to the development of local playwrights, and to the production of innovative new work. Join us as we present our first production developed here in Hendersonville. This world premiere of a new play has been specifically chosen for our audience and our region.

She plays the piano with her own swingy rhythmic bounce, injecting shades of jazz, rock, hip hop, and poetry, all with a theatrical flair. Deeply soulful, with her power belt, she sings of self-love, open-mindedness, and the holiness of everything.

Amy is the Creatrix of House of Love & Light, an online spiritual community that began at the beginning of quarantine. Deeply involved with the New Thought and Positive Music world, as well as the LGBTQ+ community, she plays at conferences, Spiritual Centers, venues and festivals all over the country.  Amy’s new recording is her 12th independent CD, “Big Bang Breaks” a powerful collection of uplifting gems.

With a rollicking, Southern rock-infused version of Americana, LoneHollow remains true to the tradition of country storytelling. Both members of the duo grew up surrounded by music, which is part of the bond that brought them together after they each moved to Nashville. Rylie’s dad plays guitar and mandolin, one in a long line of musicians himself, and Damon’s dad taught him to play guitar after receiving one as a Christmas gift. The two met after attending a post-college intensive music business program and began writing songs together.

Their debut EP under Torrez Music Group garnered considerable attention in the world of Americana and they are on the rise, catching ears, and turning heads, everywhere they go.

Biltmore Ave Parking Garage
The Biltmore Avenue parking garage will temporarily close March 25 to April 8 due to construction of the adjacent Moxy Hotel. This closure is to ensure safety.

The Biltmore Avenue Garage will be temporarily closed for 15 days beginning March 25, 2023, through April 8, 2023, for the second phase of the Moxy Hotel construction. The garage will temporarily close to all parking customers to ensure the community’s safety. The closure will impact a total of 412 parking spaces. The construction contractor will provide parking garage security for the duration of the garage closure.
 
The Moxy Hotel, a 115-unit, 7-story building, is currently being constructed on the south side of the Biltmore Avenue Parking Garage. To accommodate hotel construction, renovations to the Biltmore Parking Garage are required. The garage’s construction needed to renovate was initiated in January 2023 with a two-phase approach. The first phase was completed on February 8, 2023, 22 days ahead of schedule.
Parking arrangements for the City’s Monthly parking accounts
 
Access cards for the City’s monthly parking accounts in the Biltmore Avenue Parking Garage will be reprogrammed to allow access into the following parking areas during the 15-day closure period:
 
  • Harrah’s Cherokee Center parking garage
  • Rankin Street parking garage
  • Wall Street parking garage
  • Parking lot is located at 50 Asheland Avenue (adjacent to the Transit Center)
 
Monthly parking account holders at the Biltmore Avenue Parking Garage will also receive a 50% credit to their accounts on March 1, 2023, for the inconvenience. Monthly parking account holders have been notified via email and text message alerts.
 
Parking arrangements for hourly parkers
 
The City strives for minimal disruption during this closure. Several alternate free and fee-based parking options are available through the City of Asheville in the downtown area, including monthly parking garage passes, lots and street options starting at $30 per month. About the STORY/ARTS RESIDENCY

Story Parlor’s residencies exist to champion the creative work of locally-based artists and art groups hailing from BIPOC, LGTBQIA+, and other historically marginalized communities in the quest to amplify and bridge together the diverse fabric of voices in Asheville.

Specifically, the Story/Arts residency aims to provide a platform that showcases the transformative and healing powers of storytelling through all art mediums, while tending to the core values of Story Parlor’s mission, which include:

• Connecting audiences and artists from varying creative backgrounds and interests

• Informing, inspiring, and invigorating through the arts

• Promoting and fostering self-inquiry and mindfulness

• Cultivating creative exchange and cultural insight

• Fostering authenticity and inclusiveness

In addition to public performances and/or workshops, artists-in-residence receive dedicated rehearsal time in the space; an artist stipend; creativity coaching sessions; marketing and promotion; and more.

Applications for the 2023 summer residency are below and due no later than April 30, with preference given to applicants who cross disciplines, embrace collaboration, and present a residency proposal that embodies the core elements of storytelling through all art forms.

This short survey should take less than ten minutes to complete and will ask residents and businesses to share their experiences with these products, what actions they would like to see the City take and what kind of support would be necessary to reduce the consumption of these single-use plastic products.

The survey will remain open through April 30 and results will inform City Staff’s recommendation on next steps to City Council in October, 2023. Staff will also share results and any additional engagement opportunities with the community on the project page.

The City of Asheville, in partnership with Buncombe County and the Natural Resources Defense Council, is offering a FREE Food Scrap Drop-Off program in two locations for all Buncombe County residents.  This organic matter will be collected and turned into good clean compost, keeping it OUT of our landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in cooperation with the IRS, NC Department of Revenue, Buncombe County Library System, and Council on Aging, Inc. will offer free tax preparations for taxpayers of low and moderate income, with special attention to those aged 60 and older.

You will need an appointment to speak with a tax help aide. At your appointment, you can drop off your tax documents and you’ll be given another appointment in about 2 weeks to pick up your paperwork and completed tax form.

How it works

  1. Pick up a tax record envelope and instructions at Black Mountain, West Asheville, Weaverville, or Pack Library during library hours.
  2. Complete the Intake/Interview Booklet in your envelope by answering all questions. Then sign and date the last 3 pages.  Place all your tax forms and any information relating to your tax return in your envelope.
  3. Make an appointment to drop off your Tax Record Envelope and meet with a Tax-Aide volunteer.

Mondays and Thursdays, appointments are available between 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

An AARP volunteer will contact you to set up your appointment. You can pick up a tax packet at the library. Pack Memorial Library

Wednesdays, appointments are available between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

To make an appointment on Wednesday at Pack Library, email [email protected] with your name and phone number. An AARP volunteer will contact you to set up your appointment. If you don’t have access to email, the staff at the library can email AARP for you. You can pick up your tax packet at the library. At your appointment, a tax volunteer will check all documents and give you a follow-up appointment to pick up your completed tax return and documents.

Saturdays, appointments are available between 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

To make an appointment for Saturday tax help at Pack Library, email [email protected]. At your appointment, a tax volunteer will check all documents and give you a follow-up appointment to pick up your completed tax return and documents. This tax help is provided by UNCA. Saturday tax help ends on April 1 and there will be no tax help on February 18.

Weaverville Library and Weaverville First Baptist Church

Thursdays, appointments are available between 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

You can pick up your tax packet at the library. At your appointment, a tax volunteer will check all documents and give you a follow-up appointment to pick up your completed tax return and documents.

West Asheville Library

Tuesdays, appointments are available between 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

If you don’t have access to email, the staff at the library can email AARP for you. You can pick up your tax packet at the library. At your appointment, a tax volunteer will check all documents and give you a follow-up appointment to pick up your completed tax return and documents in 1 or 2 weeks.

Tax help will start on Feb. 1 and end on April 15.
