Blue Ridge Orchestra presents “Musique Ménage”
Mar 8 @ 7:00 pm
Carolina Day School, Upper School Auditorium

Music Ménage features a chamber ensemble of select orchestra musicians and the return of multi-talented vocalists from the Opera Theatre at UNC Greensboro.

BRO Music Director Milton Crotts and Opera Theatre Director David Holley promise an evening of elegant opera music including selections from Mozart’s comedic masterpiece The Impresario, “Chi il bel sogno” from Puccini’s La Rondine, and “Morro, ma prima in grazia” from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera about the assassination of Swedish King Gustav III.  The program features iconic songs sung by the title characters of three beloved French operas: Bizet’s Carmen sings the defiant and challenging “Habanera”; Massenet’s Manon performs her celebratory “Gavotte”; Lakme and her servant girl Mallika sing the hauntingly beautiful “Flower Duet” by Leo Delibes. The emotional tenor aria “La Serenata”, the “Intermezzo” from Cavalleria Rusticana, and the “Meditation” from Thais are among the many other highlights of these intimate concerts.

The Thursday evening salon in the Governor’s graceful mountain retreat will be accompanied by wine and delectables. Fortunate attendees will have an opportunity to mingle with the gifted performers on both evenings. The Orchestra is delighted to extend its collaboration with the UNC Greensboro Opera Theatre as part of its ongoing mission to promote connections that enhance the musical experiences of WNC audiences. UNC Greensboro is renowned for its Opera Theatre program – UNCG productions have earned seven first-place awards in the National Opera Association’s annual competition and its graduates perform with celebrated opera companies across the country. Our exclusive performances help make these musical partnerships possible.

Few independent bands have had a career as varied and unpredictable as the indie pop sextet Sub-Radio. Founded in Washington DC by a group of childhood friends, the band released a series of EPs between 2018 and 2020, blending the pop-punk they grew up on with the indie-pop stylings of WALK THE MOON and The 1975. Forced online by the COVID-19 pandemic, they found enormous viral success on Reddit and TikTok in 2021, streaming their high-energy live performances to more than 20 million viewers and driving a huge new audience to their single “Flashback”. The band signed with indie label Th3rd Brain in early 2022 and released their latest EP, Past Selves in February of 2023. In support of the new release, Sub-Radio announced The Past Selves Tour which kicks off in August of 2023.MOONTOWER

Raunchy Little Musical
Mar 8 @ 7:30 pm
Hendersonville Theatre

Approximate Run Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes
Rating: Mature due to adult situations, humor, and language

Breaking the glass ceiling for Amy Schumer, Joan Rivers and The Marvelous Mrs. Masel, Belle Barth was the original irreverent female comic, Queen of the Borscht Belt, deflating anyone who dared take sex too seriously. Raunchy Little Musical – Belle Barth is Back! is an hilarious and heartfelt show that chronicles the launch of the 50s Queen of Crass. It is an evening with this pioneer of edgy comedy anchored by an original score by Grammy-nominated composer Ilya Levinson, with plenty of Belle’s jokes and songs that topped the charts of the “adults only” record section… the “party records” your parents played when you were sent to bed. Inspired by her Jewish comedian father, Belle, a classically trained pianist, defined the odds (and her mother’s wishes for a career at Carnegie Hall). She rose to the top of a very limited genre of performers playing to packed clubs worldwide in an era when “women ain’t comics” culminating in a sold-out appearance at Carnegie Hall..her greatest success and yet her demise.

Jimmy Ferraro (Producer/Director) Jimmy is a theatrical stage director with over 100 productions to his credit, most recently My Big Fat Italian Wedding Murder which ran for 2 years in Florida and most recently in Chicago. He also produced and directed the hit New York premiere of Raunchy Little Musical…Belle Barth is Back!, scheduled to open at The Hendersonville Theatre in June and in Chicago in the Fall.

His credits as a producer and director are an outgrowth of decades as a professional performer throughout the U.S. and overseas, including Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theatre. He made his Broadway debut in Fiddler On The Roof, directed by Jerome Robbins. Jimmy appeared in two Broadway national tours of Fiddler, with over 3000 performances to his credit. He starred as Tevye, (his signature role), in Fiddler in the 2012 National Tour, (winning Broadway World’s Best Actor in a Musical Award). He is also known  throughout the country for his roles as Sancho Panza in Man Of La Mancha, Nicely-Nicely in Guys And Dolls, each of which he has played more than 1000  performances and as Edna in . Jimmy and his wife, Broadway actress Dee Etta Rowe, now make their home in Hendersonville.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred
Mar 9 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Sigal Music Museum
Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

An Evening of Folk Music with Tina + Her Pony
Mar 9 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Story Parlor

“If you’re looking for some sweet tunes to swaddle yourself in as they carry you gently into spring, look no further than Tina and Her Pony’s latest record Marigolds.” -Arend Lee Jessurun, Country Everwhere.com
On Marigolds — and on stage in support of the record — Collins is aided in her musical vision by a celebrated coterie of Western North Carolina musicians. Melissa Hyman plays electric bass and sings backup; Ryan Furstenberg plays electric guitar and also sings. (Hyman and Furstenberg are a married couple who also tour and record with their own popular group, The Moon and You.) The quartet is rounded out by Ross Montsinger, who’s also behind the drum kit for another WNC group, Dulci Ellenberger Band.
Collins’ life experiences — relocating, having relationships and groups start and eventually end — and the lessons she’s learned along the way find expression in Tina and Her Pony’s original songs. “The goal is to move people to emotion,” she says. She notes that several of the songs on Marigolds address the visceral emotion of grief. “But there are also songs of rebirth,” she adds, then sums up her perspective in three words: “Nothing is forever.”
These days, her lyrics have a less literal and more universal quality. “I’ve been working on saying more with fewer words,” she says.

ALL AGES
STANDING ROOM ONLYBIT BRIGADE PERFORMS “NINJA GAIDEN” + “DOUBLE DRAGON” LIVE

Bit Brigade performs rock covers of full NES game soundtracks as their gamer speed runs the game live on stage.

“When was the last time you attended a live music performance with a genuine element of risk involved? And no, going to a Gwar show with a white t-shirt on doesn’t count. When Bit Brigade takes the stage your mind will frantically oscillate between “Oh! Agh!! Please don’t die!!” and “YES! He’s doing it!!” Combining the dread and daring of a live video game speed run with the spot-on technique of a live band covering the musical accompaniment to everything you’re seeing on-screen in real time, Bit Brigade will have you swinging between the two mediums. From thrashing about to live renditions of your favorite stage themes, fingers yearning to the sky in a rock ‘n roll parody of sea anemones seeming to silently plead, “Please, feed us more fretboard pyrotechnics!,” to being locked in stock-still rapture as the infallible maestro of the d-pad, Noah McCarthy, takes on the final boss and risks his video game life under the threat of intense peer scorn (or the reward of night-long glory and a credits score). No matter the outcome, Bit Brigade must play on until the deed is done – which it always is – on the first (and last) try. Once Noah’s NES buzzes on, there’s no turning back.” – Metalhead Mike of The Shizz, summer 2011
