Sigal Music Museum’s current special exhibition, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred, highlights items from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, which hails from all over the world. Showing November 2023 – May 2024, Worlds Apart uses a diverse range of historical instruments, objects, and visuals to bring together musical narratives from seemingly disparate parts of the globe.

 

Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred aims to increase public access to historical instruments from around the world and improve visitors’ understanding of musical traditions at the global level. Expanding beyond the typical parameters of the Western musical canon, Worlds Apart seeks to expose audiences to musical instruments and customs that are often overlooked or exotified. The instruments and other exhibit materials will offer visitors new perspectives on global music and a chance to consider how music is used for prayer and leisure in cultures around the world. By celebrating these stories, the museum intends to further its mission to collect and preserve historical musical instruments, objects, and information, which engage and enrich people of all ages through exhibits, performances, and experiential programs.

 

Displaying various objects from the JoAnn and Frank Edwinn Collection, Worlds Apart: Musical Instruments from Secular to Sacred focuses on international musical instruments and cultures, celebrating rites and traditions with ancient histories and contemporary legacies. Frank Edwinn, a successful basso in the mid-20th century, studied and toured internationally, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he taught music at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Throughout his life, he purchased various objects from around the world, aiming to expose students, and himself, to the wide and wonderful world of musical instruments. This impressive collection occupies a unique position for educating audiences unfamiliar with the vast scope of global music.

And, UNCA’s Ramsey Library Special Collections is now processing the Edwinn’s papers and a few recordings that will be accessible next semester!

Kieran Kane’s seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music. A successful solo artist, collaborator, and songwriter (with songs recorded by Alan Jackson, John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and many more), Kieran is a musician’s musician: his playing is always understated, always groove-oriented, and always serving the song.

If Rayna Gellert seems a preternaturally gifted songwriter, it’s because she’s seen farther into the old songs than most. Growing up in a musical family, she turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age, becoming a prodigious fiddler and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl. An in-demand collaborator, she has toured and recorded with artists such as Scott Miller, Abigail Washburn, Toubab Krewe, and Robyn Hitchcock.

Kieran and Rayna first met, fittingly, at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, which led to their cowriting songs for Kieran’s solo album Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning). They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records), which they also co-produced. Their first duo album, The Ledges, was released in February of 2018 on Dead Reckoning Records, followed up quickly by 2019’s When the Sun Goes Down.

In 2022, this “unlikely musical couple” released The Flowers That Bloom in Spring, which finds the duo digging deeper into their exploration of minimalist writing and recording.

Fans of either artist will recognize the musical kindred-spiritedness in their restrained and roots-oriented approach to both songs and arrangements.

Music and Dance Workshop is a live, interactive 60-minute immersive class for young people (ages 0-7) and their adults. The class include Mr. Ryan’s original poems, songs, and a few classic covers. Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, Emily Musolino has been crafting a unique combination of soul inspired, powerhouse vocals for nearly two decades. Influenced as a child by iconic female vocalists Etta James and Janis Joplin, Musolino’s music emits a dynamic combination of blues and shredding rock guitar with hints of jazz and classic outlaw country that only those with a mastery in music composition can create. Traversing addiction, discrimination, and growing up LGBT in the southeast, Musolino finds strength for her recovery in songwriting that culminates in authentic, pure music infused with strong feminist and queer positive messaging.

After graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2012, Emily moved back home to Durham, North Carolina where she built her own recording studio, Blue Moose Studios. She quickly found her talents recruited by Dark Water Rising and spent the following 4 years performing over 200 shows a year, perfecting her sound. In 2017, she transitioned to focus primarily on her solo work, fronting the Emily Musolino band and releasing three albums of original material.

Joanne Shaw Taylor, initially discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16, has over the years, carved out an impressive niche for herself in the world of blues-rock. After witnessing her incredible guitar playing, Stewart immediately invited her to join his supergroup, D.U.P, setting the wheels in motion for a flourishing musical career. Her prodigious talent on the guitar earned her accolades from several industry giants, including Jimmy Cliff, Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Wonder, and Annie Lennox.

Now in her 30s, Joanne has emerged as one of the most coveted guitarists in the rock domain. Her debut album, “White Sugar” (2009), released on Ruf Records, showcased her soulful voice and exceptional songwriting ability, heralding the arrival of a new luminary in the blues-rock arena. This was followed by a series of critically acclaimed albums: “Diamonds In The Dirt” (2010), “Almost Always Never” (2012), featuring the UK radio hit “Soul Station,” and a live album, “Songs From The Road” (2013), which marked her final release with Ruf Records.

Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith produced her seventh album, “The Blues Album,” on Bonamassa’s independent label, KTBA Records, in 2021.  The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. In 2022, she released her first live DVD and her second No. 1 Billboard Blues album, “Blues From The Heart Live,” which led to her TV debut on Public Television (PBS). Later in 2022, Joanne released her eighth studio album, “Nobody’s Fool,” with collaborations from Joe Bonamassa, Dave Stewart, Tina Guo, and Carmen Vandenburg.

Throughout 2023 and into 2024, Joanne will continue to tour nationally and internationally while her live performances will still be broadcast on PBS stations across the country.
