Being an artist can be a lonely endeavor. RAD Collabs seeks to inspire artists to leave behind solitary work habits, encourage new friendships and inspire imaginative art.
We put the word out to Asheville-area artists earlier this year and had an overwhelming response from painters, potters, metalsmiths, woodworkers and others who expressed an interest in working with glassblowers.
The work exhibited in this show will shine the light on these new partnerships. Come see the show and watch glassblowers in action all at the same time!

Join us for a fun and interactive story time designed for children ages 18 months to 3 years.
Join us at Eliada Home’s campus for a small group guided walking Farm Tour. Tours last approximately 1 hour. Participants will learn about outdoor and greenhouse growing practices, aquaponics, hydroponics, market gardening, corn maze production, and learn about our Animal Therapy program.
We will be meeting at the PARC building and walking to the different greenhouses, garden site, and a visit with our animals. Reservations required, tickets are $10 each visitor (to be collected at the time of the tour).
We recommend bringing the following: comfortable shoes for walking on pavement and grass, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. This tour is not handicap accessible and will require participants to climb stairs and walk on uneven ground.
We will begin out tour promptly at the starting time, so please arrive 5-10 min early to allow for parking and check-in. If you are running late or cannot make your tour, please email [email protected] or call #828-348-2287.
All proceeds from ticket sales from your farm tour go directly back to helping the Campus Farm Program grow more food for the children of Eliada!

Sister Ivy is the voice of the vine that weaves in and out of roots and open air, mixes with the weeds, and climbs to lofty vistas on the limbs of grand trees.
Visiting Asheville soon and looking for a fun way to fill your Friday night? The Asheville Drum Circle is a tradition unique to the area. While locals usually begin the beating of drums, tourists are welcome to join, dance, or simply take in the incredible atmosphere at any point.

The Asheville Drum Circle is a free event that’s open to all.
Music on Main is the annual Friday evening summer concert series at the Hendersonville Visitor Center. Each week, bring a chair, sit back and enjoy free live music! Every concert showcases a different band performing diverse line-up ranging from pop, oldies, rock, to contemporary music. The family-friendly event offers concessions such as hot dogs, ice cream, pretzels and lemonade for sale. Every Friday evening, the Carolina Mountain Car Club hosts a classic car show in conjunction with Music on Main. The car shows are located in front of the Wells Fargo between Barnwell and Caswell Streets, which will be closed to traffic.
This all-new event allows guests to enjoy stories around the campfire from interesting figures in the realms of science, conservation and environmental education, all while experiencing the wonder of Grandfather Mountain after dark.
This event costs $50 for general admission and $42 for members of Grandfather Mountain’s Bridge Club. Online registration begins July 19.
Buncombe County Election Services wants to see your designs for the ever-popular ‘I Voted’ sticker. “We rolled out a custom Buncombe County branded sticker for the mid-term primary election and so many people loved it, says Election Services Director Corinne Duncan. “We want to see how creative the community can get.” Break out your colored pens, roll up your sleeves, show your civic pride, and show us your best ‘I Voted,’ sticker design.
WHO: Any young person, ages 13-18 that is a resident of Buncombe County is eligible to participate.
WHAT: Design a logo that we will use to create 2-inch “I Voted” stickers and digital graphics that can be used for sharing for the Nov. 8, 2022 Mid-Term Election. I Voted must appear somewhere in the design, but the rest is up to you.
WHEN: Artwork will be collected until Sept. 2, 2022. The Buncombe County Board of Elections will select the top three designs and then – of course – we open the contest up to the community to vote on the top designs on our website at engage.buncombecounty.org. From Sept. 7-21 cast your vote for your favorite design. The winning artwork will be selected from the top vote getters and announced on Sept. 22, 2022. Stickers will be distributed during the General Election to all voters in Buncombe County.

Ethno is JM International’s program for folk, world and traditional music. Founded in 1990, it is aimed at young musicians (up to the age of 30) with a mission to revive and keep alive global cultural heritage.
Present today in over 40 countries and on all 6 continents, Ethno engages young people through a series of annual international music camps as well as workshops, concerts and tours, working together with schools, conservatories and other groups of youth to promote peace, tolerance and understanding.
Applications are open for the second edition of Ethno USA, from October 11-23 in beautiful Black Mountain, NC. We are so excited to be back there, and we hope you’ll join us.

If you’re behind on your water bill or afraid your water might get cut off, a new resource might be able to help you. On Jan. 4, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approved more than $450,000 in federal funding for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The initiative is aimed at preventing water disconnections and helping reconnect drinking and wastewater services.
The LIHWAP will be administered by Buncombe County-based Eblen Charities. The nonprofit will make payments directly to utilities on behalf of qualifying households. The program is slated to run through Sept. 30, 2023 or until funds are exhausted.
Eligibility requirements
Households that currently receive Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Work First services, or those that received Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) services from Oct. 1, 2020-Sept. 30, 2021, are automatically eligible to receive this benefit if their water services have been cut off or are in danger of being cut off.

What Is Outpace Hunger?
Looking for a way to make a real impact this spring and summer? Feed people while pursuing your passion through Outpace Hunger, an action-based fundraising campaign that turns a favorite activity into meals!
For decades, MANNA FoodBank has been working to outpace hunger and food insecurity all across 16 counties of Western North Carolina, including the Qualla Boundary. The 2022 campaign runs May 1 through September 30, and we invite you join the growing community of folks who are Outpacing Hunger alongside of us!
How It Works
Participating in Outpace Hunger is easy!
You decide your level of commitment, so every participant can create their own path to helping provide food to our community. Participants also decide how, when, and where they complete their goal, any time now through the campaign end on September 30.
Outpace Hunger participants:
(1) Register to be a part of MANNA’s Outpace Hunger community. The $20 registration fee includes a t-shirt for you and provides 80 MEALS for neighbors facing food insecurity in WNC.
(2) Choose a favorite activity (run, walk, roll, stroll, hike, bike, paddle, climb, float, skate, golf, and everything in between!) to complete individually, or as a family/group/team.
(3) Set a goal to reach. This can be an activity-related goal, a fundraising goal, or both.
(4) Invite friends and family to support your fundraising efforts through your own, personalized Outpace Hunger webpage.
Whether running a 5K, walking your neighborhood, hiking the Mountains to Sea trail, or paddling the French Broad River, Outpace Hunger participants play a vital part in ensuring our WNC neighbors have access to healthy food.

Financial Empowerment for Women
Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World® – Building Resources for a Better Life. YWCA’s Getting Ahead program aims to provide financial empowerment for low-income women of all ages and backgrounds to make choices that positively impact themselves, their families and their community.
Knowledge is Power
A series of “kitchen table” discussions that investigate the causes of poverty, the hidden rules of class, and resources needed by all. Participants will assess individual situations as well as the condition of our community to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

17th Annual Come to Leicester Artist Studio Tour: 10 AM – 5 PM, August 20-21. Artists in the small community of Leicester, NC open their studios to the public for this free, self-guided tour. Visitors choose their own tour stops using detailed brochures with maps and signs along the route directing to the individual stops. Visitors will find many types of fine art and crafts, including brooms, pottery, paintings, iron work, jewelry, fiber, stained glass, mosaic, enamel, and mixed media. Join Asheville GreenWorks for a cleanup of the Swannanoa River. Come to this fun and challenging section ready to remove large items, tires, and other trash from this waterway. Volunteers must be 13+ years old for this cleanup.
Please be prepared by dressing appropriately: bathing suits, shorts, quick dry clothing, river shoes or old sneakers. NO flip flops, slides, or heavy clothing like jeans. Bring sun protection and water. All other supplies and gear including boats, life vests, gloves, and trash bags will be provided.

Meet in the grassy field past John B Lewis soccer complex (see attachment). Look for a GreenWorks representative to direct you for parking. We will shuttle from here to the put in, and work downstream to finish back at parked vehicles.
TFAC invites all artists: painters, sculptors, writers, performers & more — to a casual weekly drop-in gathering on Saturday mornings at 9 AM to share your works in progress, alert others, and chat about art and what’s happening in your community.
The first weekly Coffee is Saturday, August 20 at 9 am.

Are you interested in earning money while helping support the democratic process? If so, Buncombe County Election Services is looking for poll workers to help with Early Voting (Oct.20-Nov.5) and Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8. It’s a rewarding way to help our community while supplementing your income. If this sound interesting, read on to learn more about the perks of working the polls, eligibility requirements, pay scales, and more.
Perks of Working the Polls:
- Meaningful work
- No prior experience needed
- Option to work one full day or shifts for two weeks
- Earn extra money
- Great team atmosphere
- Build highly transferrable skills
- Doesn’t impact unemployment benefits (Per Session Law 2020-71, any person that is receiving unemployment may work as a poll worker without any effect on their unemployment benefits)
- Opportunities for students, people looking for supplemental incomes, and retirees with flexible schedules
“Our poll workers are the backbone of safe and fair elections,” said Corinne Duncan, Director of Elections. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to offer our Buncombe County voters the best experience at the polls, regardless of if they vote early or on Election Day.”
Through the Student Assistant Program, students who will be at least 17 years old by Election Day (Nov. 8) can work as assistants. Use the Student Election Assistant Application.
To be eligible you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a registered voter of Buncombe County (Unaffiliated voters will be considered)
- Be comfortable and confident using a laptop
- Be able to sit or stand for long periods of time while working with voters
- Be able to put aside all political activity and conversation on social media and in person for a two-week period over early voting and election day.
- Be able to lift 25 pounds
Early Voting
During Early Voting (Oct.20-Nov.5), each location is staffed with a Captain and a team of workers. Captains make $14/hour and workers make $12/hour. Working during Early Voting requires a minimum commitment of 17 days, including weekend shifts and mandatory paid training. The captain carries the most responsibility with duties including voting location access, task delegation, reconciliation, equipment troubleshooting, and voting process/election law familiarity.

Election Day
Each of our 80 precincts is staffed with three judges and a number of assistants. Election Day workers receive a lump sum payment (see below) which includes payment to attend the mandatory four-hour training session. Everyone is required to work the entirety of Election Day on Nov. 8, which typically runs from 6 a.m-9 p.m. Precincts are located throughout the county, and we do our best to assign you to a precinct near your home.

Join us for an artful afternoon on the plaza! In conjunction with American Perspectives, we welcome artists Kimberly English, Casey Engel, and Nora Mosrie. Drop by the plaza in front of the museum to enjoy artist demonstrations in weaving, quilting, and corn husk dolls. Come inside the atrium to listen to live music by folk musicians Madeline Dierauf, Gabe Nassar-McMillan, Liam Coker, and Claire Hoke.

About the artists:
- Kimberly English is an artist and educator living and working in Asheville, North Carolina. She earned her BFA in Fibers as a Distinguished Scholar from Savannah College of Art and Design, and her MFA in Studio Art from University of North Carolina subsequently. Kimberly’s practice seeks to recontextualize everyday cloth, exploring themes central to the history of the production of cloth, its labor force, and the local impact of a global economy. Her work has been exhibited widely, most recently through Slouch Gallery, Vox Populi, and the Ackland Museum at UNC Chapel Hill.
- Casey Engel is an interdisciplinary artist primarily working in printmaking, ceramics and textiles. In 2015, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Printmedia from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since graduating, she has worked at various fine art print shops throughout Chicago as well as Western North Carolina; such as, Chicago Printmakers Collaborative, Starshaped Press, the Evanston Art Center, and Starfangled Press. She was the Gallery Manager and a Studio Assistant at Odyssey ClayWorks and teaches there. Casey has exhibited throughout Western North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Washington and Chicago and is represented by Blue Spiral 1.
About the musicians:
- Madeline Dierauf is a Western North Carolina fiddler who grew up listening to old-time Appalachian Music. For the past 12 years, she has played the fiddle, starting with bluegrass and Irish music, before fully committing to the old-time tradition. She has learned from local musicians such as Beanie O’Dell, Emily Schaad, and Nicky Sanders of the Steep Canyon Rangers. The fiddle has taken her to stages varying from Wilkesboro’s Merlefest to the Atlanta St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and she recently won first prize at the South Carolina State Old-time Fiddle Competition. In 2020, she released her debut EP, Walk On By, which features original and traditional songs.
- Claire Hoke is a singer songwriter born and raised on North Carolina land and music. She’s been performing around WNC since 2018 in various groupings and these days finds herself settling into playing her tunes solo. Drawing inspiration from artists like James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, and Sarah Jarosz, Claire weaves her innermost musings into the fabric of her fingerstyle and open tuning driven music. She uses songwriting to express things that are honest, uncomfortable, and sometimes left unsaid
- Gabriel Nassar-McMillan is a multimedia artist and musician based in Asheville and a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina, Asheville with a Bachelor’s degree in New Media. Through this major he was able to explore his love for both music and video, and worked closely with artists in the UNCA Department of Music on local performances and studio recordings. Gabriel is a self-taught musician and has been composing his own melodies since he was first able to write, even recording this work at a young age. He finds American acoustic folk music to be an intriguing blend of minimalism and emotional honesty, a combination which has influenced his own writings and has left songs stuck in his head for countless hours, some of which he will be performing at this event.
- William (Liam) Coker is a musician and recent graduate of the University of North Carolina, Asheville with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Music and Jazz. In addition to these genres Liam plays a wide variety of music, including Bluegrass. He contributes guitar and banjo to his local ensemble, and they perform traditional folk music as well as historical Bluegrass compositions. As a guitar player of ten years, Liam remains fully committed to his passion for playing and brings joy to his friends, family, and audiences through his music.
COMMUNITY EVENTS
Community events are offered during the year in conjunction with the Museum’s Collection, exhibitions, and other special events. Activities may include performances, guided tours, demonstrations, or hands-on studio projects. Community events are open to all ages and abilities; no reservations required.
Every other Sunday we will enjoy biking together on designated paths around the Asheville area. Our journeys will end with a visit to a local hostelry where we will imbibe and converse with kindness and goodwill. Bring water and an open heart. Diversity is encouraged.
Buncombe County Election Services wants to see your designs for the ever-popular ‘I Voted’ sticker. “We rolled out a custom Buncombe County branded sticker for the mid-term primary election and so many people loved it, says Election Services Director Corinne Duncan. “We want to see how creative the community can get.” Break out your colored pens, roll up your sleeves, show your civic pride, and show us your best ‘I Voted,’ sticker design.
WHO: Any young person, ages 13-18 that is a resident of Buncombe County is eligible to participate.
WHAT: Design a logo that we will use to create 2-inch “I Voted” stickers and digital graphics that can be used for sharing for the Nov. 8, 2022 Mid-Term Election. I Voted must appear somewhere in the design, but the rest is up to you.
WHEN: Artwork will be collected until Sept. 2, 2022. The Buncombe County Board of Elections will select the top three designs and then – of course – we open the contest up to the community to vote on the top designs on our website at engage.buncombecounty.org. From Sept. 7-21 cast your vote for your favorite design. The winning artwork will be selected from the top vote getters and announced on Sept. 22, 2022. Stickers will be distributed during the General Election to all voters in Buncombe County.
