A peer-reviewed open-access digital publication of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center (BMCM+AC). The Journal seeks to host diverse works by writers and artists of varied backgrounds. We welcome academic articles, essays, reviews, poetry, images and forms of artistic expression.

The latest issue of the Journal of Black Mountain College Studies is now online! Volume 10: Chance I Dance is an exploration of dance and performance at Black Mountain College featuring artists and interpreters of work both past and contemporary. The issue is replete with fascinating videos and photographs, as well as articles and poetry.

We welcome you to submit proposals and submissions for upcoming issues. At the moment, submissions we have already received are leading us to focus the next issue on pedagogies and practices of writing at BMC, and we can accept more contributions related to that theme.

Poetry, images, reviews, academic articles, essays, memoirs, archival material, and media are most welcome. We strongly suggest sending us an abstract or a proposal before you proceed to develop a finished submission. • To Artists – We could not do this without you! We are continuing to accept art, and you can read more here.
  • To VIP Insiders – Please stay tuned for a rescheduled date. We plan to hold this portion of our event once we have rescheduled.
  • To Community Partners – Ya rock! We are so thankful for your support and look forward to continued collaboration.

Please stay tuned! We will update you all as soon as we have additional information about our rescheduled date. In the meantime, please take care of yourself and your families. You can read more about protecting yourself here.

Hey Asheville,

It’s time to get Nasty, again!

VIP Insider preview starts at 5 pm
Open to the public from 6 pm – 9 pm

Hi-Wire is making a special brew to commemorate the event, and donating a portion of the proceeds back to Planned Parenthood! There will be local vendors selling feminist-inspired art, and we have an exciting text to give challenge gift for the evening!

  • New to 2020! For $35, become a VIP Insider and come early to enjoy a complimentary champagne and kombucha reception. Enjoy an EXCLUSIVE preview of the art being sold, browse the market vendors, and bid on silent auction pieces. Reserve your space here!
  • General Admission is FREE to the public and doors open at 6 pm. Enjoy complimentary nibbles! Art Show pieces will range from $1-$200 and silent auction bidding will start at $250
  • Know a local artist you would like to see at the event? Artist Submissions are still being accepted! For our general art show, we request all pieces priced at $200 and less. This year will also include a silent auction for art that could go for more than $200. To submit a piece, click here or forward this email to your favorite artists!

“The Cruel Truth” exhibit Cancelled
Mar 30 all-day
Revolve Gallery

“The Cruel Truth” is a solo exhibit of new paintings by George Terry McDonald. Opening Party March 6, 7 to 10 pm. He is a bard for our age, presenting populist legends in surreal and ironic narratives. From Tom Dooley to Michael Bennett, JFK to 45, he chronicles the death, and stubborn life of American mythologies. Blending the content of outsider art with the technique of a master draftsman, expressionist brushwork, and photorealist detail, he extolls the underdog and turns americana inside out.

Brass Monkey Photography Free Online Classes
Mar 30 all-day
Brass Monkey Photography Online

Hi everyone! I hope that you are staying safe (and sane) in this unprecedented time? I’d like to offer a FREE online class, (absolutely no catch) on getting the most out of your camera.

Do you have a digital camera that you only use in Automatic mode and would like to get more out of it? Have you ever wondered what the different settings are and how they could help you when taking portraits or landscape photographs?

I’d like to set up a few beginner sessions to go over the basics. I will create 60-90 minute segments (via video link) and will look at:

– Aperture
– ISO
– Shutter Speed
– How different lenses impact your photo
– And many more topics

They’ll be in bite size chunks that are more manageable and give you an opportunity to review your notes prior to the next class. The class will be interactive at points too – it’s not just me talking to you via a pre-recorded message. Let’s have some fun together and have you using your camera more this spring/summer!

Respond below and let me know. Please RSVP within 24 hours of the start of each class.

Thanks!

Natasha
