Inspired by the music of the Pat Metheny Group, Steely Dan, George Winston, and Kansas, the Asheville-based, Robert Thomas Band has a unique style that defies a specific genre. Audiences will appreciate the smooth and seamless crossover effect the music takes, incorporating jazz, new age, prog rock, and Celtic styles. The keyboard/guitar infused compositions are “seriously” clever, yet familiar, delighting both jazz and non-jazz listeners.
In addition to hearing songs off the their most recent CD, ‘Urban Sunset’(Apple Music, iTunes, and Spotify), the band’s set list often includes covers by the likes of Sting, Bruce Hornsby, and Elton John.
Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at the Isis. Reservations are highly recommended.

Who says you can’t become a professional musician in your sixties?! Anyone who thinks that hasn’t met singer/songwriter, Bob Jordan, who just released his first CD of 13 original compositions, “If This Dream Stands” with an All-Star lineup for a band, recorded at the renowned Seclusion Hill Music with owner/ sound engineer Phil Ludwig!
Retired English professor, Bob Jordan, who’s played music all of his life, upon retirement set out to write the Great American Novel, but found that nothing came to mind. However, lyrics began to flow from him as if it was destiny, and wonderful original songs came shortly after!
If you like grassroots rock, country, and folk music, then you truly are going to enjoy Bob Jordan’s music! Think Johnny Cash meets Willie Nelson meets The Beatles meets Crosby, Stills, Nash , and you’ve got Bob’s music.
Bob has assembled a true all-star lineup for this project including:
-Bob Jordan, singer/songwriter/rhythm guitar
-Bryan McConnell, bass
-Bill Berg, drums
-Julie McConnell, backing vocals/percussion
-Kelly Jones, lead guitar/backing vocals
-Paul Rene McIntire, violin
-Jackson Dulaney, pedal steel/resonator guitar
-Taylor Pierson, piano
—————
A pianist and drummer before he picked up a guitar, Jordan had played in bands throughout his school years and into his 30s, but set aside professional ambitions to teach. Though he taught writing, it had not occurred to him to write songs until he retired.
Sitting in front of his computer, his first thought was that now he had time to write the Great American Novel. When nothing came to mind, he decided to give lyrics a try, adding the music later.
If This Dream Stands is a project managed and produced by McConnell’s Music. Julie and Bryan McConnell recruited veteran session musicians from the Asheville area for an album that includes 13 of Jordan’s songs, along with a reprise of the opening “Old Black Snake” featuring grandson Henry Stout on vocals.

As sculpted shards of guitar—tumbling, tolling, squalling—shower the jittery bounce of a piano on opener “Human,” it’s obvious that Reason in Decline, Archers of Loaf’s first album in 24 years, will be more than a nostalgic, low-impact reboot. When they emerged from North Carolina’s ’90s indie-punk incubator, the Archers’ hurtling, sly, gloriously dissonant roar was a mythologized touchstone of slacker-era refusal. But this, the distilled shudder of “Human” (as in “It’s hard to be human / When only death can set you free”), is an entirely different noise. In fact, it’s a startling revelation.
A few distinctions between 2022 Archers and the Clinton-era crew—whose “South Carolina” could be heard blaring out of Jordan Catalano’s car radio on ABC teen-angst epic My So-Called Life. First, guitarists Eric Bachmann and Eric Johnson, once headstrong smartasses inciting a series of artful pileups on the band’s four studio albums and EP, are now a fluidly complementary, sonically advanced unit. Notably, Johnson’s signature trebly lines peal clearly above the din instead of struggling to be heard. Second, singer-songwriter Bachmann, after throat surgery, relearned how to sing (this time from his diaphragm); as a result, he no longer howls like the angriest head cold on the Eastern Seaboard. And now, his lyrics balance righteous wrath with a complex tangle of adult perspective. He still spits bile, but it’s less likely to concern scene politics, music trends, or shady record labels thwarting the dreams of a young rock band.
Bachmann puts it bluntly: “What I really think about going back to the Archers and doing a new record is that the three other members of this band are awesome. It’s not about responding to the past or whatever our bullshit legacy is. I just wanted to work with these guys because I knew the chemistry we had and that we still have. I knew that was rare. I didn’t care what it ended up sounding like.”
Archers of Loaf’s first tour of duty ended after 1998’s White Trash Heroes. The album did not raise the band’s once touted commercial roof, and the members—Bachmann, Johnson, bassist Matt Gentling, and drummer Mark Price—were a bedraggled bunch of coulda-beens. Price was unable to play without extreme pain due to carpal tunnel syndrome. Bachmann itched to try a different musical approach. Everyone was tapped out in one way or another. Though the four remained good friends and convened for occasional reunion gigs (to support Merge’s 2011–12 album reissues, for instance), they never worked on new music. Gentling had joined Band of Horses; Johnson, now a criminal defense attorney in Asheville, North Carolina, contributed guitar to projects when he had the time. On his own, Bachmann thrived, releasing 11 albums
of atmospheric, folky rock/pop under his own name or “group” moniker Crooked Fingers. In recent years, he’d toured as a sideman/foil for torch-country star Neko Case.

The award-winning Celtic duo of harpist Sue Richards and guitarist Robin Bullock, present CAROLINA CELTIC, a monthly concert series at White Horse. Carolina Celtic showcases Irish and Scottish musical traditions and explores their commonality with the Appalachian ballads and stories of the Carolina mountains.
Tonight’s Guest Performers are CAROLYN SURRICK and RONN McFARLANE
One would be hard pressed to find two musicians whose musical journeys have been more parallel (and hail from Maryland.) Both of these distinguished artists have been champions of their respective instruments for decades – McFarlane on lute and Surrick on viola da gamba. Both are compelling performers, consummate musicians, and both have immersed themselves in music from the Renaissance and Baroque, music from Ireland and Scotland, and also compose new works.
Individually, they have been awarded, acclaimed, celebrated, and now finally, they have become musical partners in an extraordinary journey. While it is true that they toured for decades, traveled thousands of miles, slept in hundreds of hotels rooms, have been on stage in some of the most prestigious concert halls in this country, and recorded dozens of CDs, this new and unexpected partnership has been remarkable in every way. Their musicianship is impeccable, the ease with which they play together is stunning, and their music making is a joy to behold.
They’ve just released a new holiday album featuring reimagined traditional Christmas favorites alongside new works
It is alchemy. While Ronn McFarlane, and Carolyn Surrick, have both had significant and brilliant careers, their remarkable partnership has led them to this newfound musical life —and that has led to a rethinking and recasting of what a holiday concert can be. Yes, there are favorite Christmas carols. Yes, there is virtuosity, and yes, there are unexpected musical surprises. But there is a journey here. There is wistful memory, there is shared history, there are new stories to tell, and there is joy—joy in the making of the music, joy in the celebration of the season, and joy in the sharing of it. The unspoken communication between these two master musicians is beautiful and deep.
The partnership of Ronn McFarlane, lute, and Carolyn Surrick, viola da gamba, is one of a shared musical passion. They are both well established in their fields, have toured extensively, and recorded numerous CDs. But most importantly, they compose, arrange, and are always available to think about old music in new ways. As musicians, they are eternally productive and irrepressibly imaginative. As performers, they are luminous.
Americana artist Julia Sanders’ new album Morning Star—produced by John James Tourville of The Deslondes—unfolds a meticulously arranged musical landscape anchored by transfixing vocals and a compact but thoughtful narrative style that calls to mind forebearers like Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris. On Morning Star, Sanders explores the complexities of transitions: from woman to mother, partners to parents, and free-wheelin’ musician to an adult with roots and responsibilities. The album is a poetic, often dark, yet silver-lined portrait of transformation and growth. With each track, Sanders explores a different facet—a career, a partner, a child—and the range of emotions they carry with them, from joy and pleasure to struggle, loneliness and self-doubt. Unafraid to address the complexities that walk hand in hand with the bliss of having children—such as the loss of autonomy and the fracturing of identity—Morning Star provides a much-needed soundtrack to the experience of matrescence—the physical, emotional and social transition to motherhood.

“After five long years of dealing with the pandemic, being locked out of America for a year, stopping my last tour to produce a documentary, and then diving right into the production of my new album Love Left 2, as well as putting together this amazing box set, nothing sounds better to me than getting out of my studio and back on the road in front of live audiences where I’ve always felt most comfortable,” said Feldman.
