Voices in the Laurel Youth Choirs is accepting registration for their annual music camp. This
year’s theme is “Be the Change,” with many changes in the format of the activities. Covid 19
has forced many changes in the way things are done all over the world. Recent racial tensions
have inspired a call for change in human relations. In response to these changes in the world,
Rising 6th– 12th graders will have camp July 20 – 24, from 10 am – Noon on Zoom.

Then, Be the Change Camp for rising 1st
– 5th graders will be July 27 – 31 from 10 am – Noon on Zoom.

Friday July 24th our Ask a Scientist segment will feature Carlee Jackson. Originally from Detroit, MI, Carlee moved to Florida and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Florida Atlantic University in 2016. Ever since she read her first book on sharks at 6 years old, she has been obsessed with learning more about these animals.

Currently, she is a graduate student pursuing her Master’s in Marine Biology at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Carlee’s research thesis is titled, “Examining the effects of provisioning tourism on nurse sharks in Caye Caulker, Belize.” She also is a Marine Turtle Specialist at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, conducting sea turtle nesting surveys along Boca Raton beaches, assisting with medical procedures and husbandry in the sea turtle rehabilitation center. In her free time she enjoys going SCUBA diving and snorkeling at nearby reefs.

The Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store will begin accepting merchandise donations for resell from the public on Tuesday, June 30^th. Donations will only be accepted on Tuesdays and Fridays between the hours of 10:30am-4:00pm. The Thrift Store remains open for shopping with the reduced hours of 10:30am-4:30pm, Tuesday-Saturday, and with a limited shopper capacity.

Donations will need to be able to unloaded without staff assistance and placed into the appropriately labeled bin to ensure a contact-free drop-off. This will also assist with ensuring that all items can be properly transported and quarantined before processing and placement for resell in the store. During drop-offs all donors are asked to practice physical distancing and wear a mask following state mandates. Donated items will be quarantined before processing by staff and volunteers to ensure that all items are safe for resell.

Staff and volunteers continue to adhere to additional cleaning, sanitizing, scheduling, and social distancing practices as recommended by the CDC and current safety regulations. The number of customers allowed in the store remains limited to reduce the risk of exposure. Markers are placed to designate 6ft spaced waiting areas for shoppers to enter the store or for waiting in line for check-out. Customers, as well as staff and volunteers, are required to wear a mask while on Thrift Store premises and shopping and follow CDC recommendations.

All customers will be required to follow the procedures listed below:

• Store hours are adjusted; keep an eye on the website and Facebook page for current hours.
• The number of customers allowed in the store is limited. Please expect a wait and be patient with other shoppers while waiting, and our staff and volunteers managing the entrance and exit.
• Practice social distancing while shopping or waiting in line. Markers will be placed for checkout and entry lines.
• Shields are installed at checkout locations for the safety of our customers, volunteers, and staff.
• Hand sanitizer stations are available for customers, volunteers, and staff at stations located at each door.
• Anyone exhibiting signs of illness is asked to stay home, including staff and volunteers.
• Follow CDC recommendations at all times:
  • Three W’s: Wear a cloth mask, Wait 6’ apart and Wash your hands!

Pool will open for two sessions Monday-Saturday, closing between sessions for a sanitation period that includes wiping down all common touch points. Sunday hours include one session. Admission for each session is $3 per guest. Due to limited capacity, guests are highly encouraged to purchase tickets online. If a pool is unable to open for any reason or is forced to close within the first hour of operation, all guests will receive a raincheck via the email address provided when purchasing the original ticket. Booking are currently available through July 10.

Help a neighbor by donating blood! As the need for blood donations continues, Asheville Outlets will host a blood donation drive in partnership with the American Red Cross, Friday, July 24th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to Famous Footwear. The American Red Cross is now testing all blood, platelet, and plasma donations for the COVID-19 antibody. Red Cross donors can expect to receive the results of their antibody test within 7 to 10 days through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or on the donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org. Donors are asked to register in advance, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/give and entering the sponsor code Ashevilleoutlets. The American Red Cross will establish additional safety guidelines to ensure all donors are socially distanced.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that the coronavirus (COVID-19) does not pose any known risk to blood donors during the donation process or from attending blood drives. For more information, visit ShopAshevilleOutlets.com.

While the COVID-19 pandemic prevented National Players from traveling the U.S. and completing Tour 71, that didn’t stop America’s longest-running theatre company from bringing theatre to their fans. Through this recorded preview performance of Shakespeare’s female-driven comedy As You Like It, which combines classic elements of romance and hidden identities, NP continues its mission of making theatre more accessible. In this classic romantic comedy about gender roles, losing oneself, and discovering oneself anew, Rosalind, banished from the only home she’s ever known, assumes the identity of a man and escapes to the Forest of Arden with her cousin Celia and their fool Touchstone. While there, they run into other exiled folks from the old court, including the dashing and brave Orlando, who won Rosalind’s heart prior to her banishment, but he was too tongue tied to express his love in return. Determined to woo him, Rosalind persuades Orlando in her male disguise to win her heart. For only if Orlando loves her as a man will Rosalind know he truly loves her. National Players meld classic language with contemporary staging of Shakespeare’s imaginative tale about city folk venturing into the woods.

Lyndsay Pruett, Drew Matulich & Matt Purinton

Lyndsay Pruett’s daily life is a constant toss up of genres. As a member of the Jon Stickley trio, she gets to employ just about all of them, including bluegrass, swing, classical, Latin styles, country, and hip hop. Stylistically, she manages to compliment others’ music and add striking color to it through her improvisations and textural playing. Multi-instrumentalist Drew Matulich has toured the country playing music professionally with Billy Strings for two years and was fortunate to have shared the stage with the likes of David Grisman, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Cody Kilby, Sierra Hull and some of best in bluegrass. Matt Purinton has been a member of Greenville, SC based West End String Band for more than a decade. Heavily influenced by Sam Bush, Matt’s dynamic mandolin style is sure to get your attention.

Joshua Messick is a national hammered dulcimer champion. Nobody is more fluid on the instrument. Nobody asks more of the hammered dulcimer and certainly nobody else gets such a response. Joshua introduces the instrument to places it didn’t know it belonged and makes both the dulcimer and the music sound like they’ve known each other forever. The live stream Josh will present for White Horse Live on Fri. July 24 will be especially important. Josh will premiere material from his new solo LP, Pure Hammered Dulcimer.  A combination of original compositions and timeless songs, the LP is yet another step in Joshua’s journey. The first track, “DulciForte” in and of itself is a dazzling piece of music, taking the instrument and Josh even a big step further.
