Meadowlark Motel Live Music: Len Graham
Dec 10 @ 6:00 pm
Meadowlark Motel

Len Graham began his career in Newport Rhode Island in 1979 as a singer with the acoustic duo “Euphoria” who later became the managers for the critically acclaimed singer Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs. Ever restless, one day Len sold his MG spitfire and fled to the Rocky Mountain National Park where he hunkered down with his songwriting craft and joined the ever popular band “Load Limit.” Back to Connecticut where he and step-brother John Noble formed “Graham Noble,” a band that would join Toy Caldwell and the Marshall Tucker Band during their 1985 tour. After that Len went solo and “Lenny Graham and the Phoenix” would release an EP and be touted by many a record label. He did eventually sign with an independent label in 1987.
Later that year an appearance on “You Can Be a Star”, the first of many a talent show to come, would put him in touch with the Nashville music scene. On to Michigan and a second meeting with drummer Kenny Aronoff, who at the time was with John Cougar Mellencamp, helped him inch closer to realizing his dream. Then with everything in place including management teams on both coasts and after an appearance at the infamous “Bluebird Cafe” in Nashville and a chance encounter with David Olney who was later known as the grandfather of Americana music, Len just walked away.
He kept on honing his craft and releasing his music through his publishing company “Summer Boy Music.” With songs from his double album “Chronicles” now streaming all throughout Europe and America, Len is now content to be retired and nestled here in the Smoky Mountains, performing solo and with the trio “Smoky Blue Rain.” Come and enjoy some songs and many a story from our now native son, Len Graham.
Tickets are $10 for music only; $15 for music + BBQ dinner.

Songwriter Night with Alexa Rose, Hannah Kaminer, + Kirsten Maxwell
Dec 10 @ 8:30 pm
Isis Music Hall-Main stage

Virginia-born singer-songwriter Alexa Rose creates her own style of modern folk. Her distinctive vocal sound has bits of Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, and Gilliam Welch. Her earnest, well-crafted songs explore timeless topics. It is American roots music that blends some of the mountains with modern country and a little rock and roll.

Hannah Kaminer is a folk/Americana artist based in Asheville, NC. Raised in small towns in western North Carolina, she fuses echoes of Appalachian traditions with wistful, Americana-style songwriting. Her songs have been recognized in the finals of the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest (MerleFest 2019), with a Regional Artist Project Grant from a coalition of NC arts councils, and by Asheville’s Brown Bag Songwriting Competition (winning grand prize and crowd favorite).

Kirsten Maxwell is New York native, turned nomadic singer/songwriter. Often compared to artists like Eva Cassidy and Joni Mitchell, Maxwell is known for her vocal agility. Her vast repertoire, which includes everything from folk classics to jazz standards, is only a compliment to her award winning original songs. Maxwell has opened for Melissa Etheridge, Tanya Tucker, The Bacon Brothers, and Robert Klein. She was last seen touring with legendary singer/songwriter Judy Collins, who calls her performances a “sheer joy”.

Come enjoy an evening of live music, food and drinks at Isis Music Hall.  Advanced Reservations are highly recommended.

Chris Pureka
Dec 11 @ 7:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

It’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Her music has straddled the folk, americana and indie rock genres over the course of her 20 year career, and over that time, her bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth.

Chris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and her flair as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic, she has shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, The Cowboy Junkies, Haley Heynderickx, and Ani DiFranco. She has had her songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters, Covert Affairs and Shameless and well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film, The Royal Road. Along the way, Chris has remained truly independent, selling nearly 50,000 albums through her own label, Sad Rabbit Records.

JOHN-ALLISON WEISS
Known for their gritty, melodic indie pop songwriting, John-Allison Weiss emerged at the end of the 2000s as an early crowd-funding hero with a strong D.I.Y. ethos that has defined them throughout their career. After establishing themselves among the punk underground, they became a staple of the Warped Tour and released highly rated albums like 2013’s Say What You Mean and 2015’s New Love. Touring with everyone from Lou Reed to Letters to Cleo, Weiss has also collaborated as a songwriter with artists including Tegan Quin and Kevin Devine. Following a live album and 2021’s Death Valley Demos EP, they signed with Get Better Records and issued the singles “Different Now” and “Feels Like Hell” from their upcoming album ‘The Long Way’ out February 17th.

Bill Kirchen and His Silent Knights: Honky Tonk Holiday Show
Dec 12 @ 8:00 pm
The Grey Eagle

Forget the “Nutcracker” and “Handel’s Messiah.” For a real taste of seasonal cheer, nothing says joy to the world like Bill Kirchen singing “Daddy’s Drinkin’ Up Our Christmas!”
Bill Kirchen and his Silent Knights will make a stop on their annual Honky Tonk Holiday Tour at the Grey Eagle in Asheville on Monday 12/12.  Featured is a sleigh-full of rarely heard holiday numbers from the blues, rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk bags: “Silent Surfin’ Night,” “Truckin’ Trees for Christmas,” “Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy” and more. But be ye not afraid, there’ll be so much more than holiday songs of questionable taste; you can count on a truckload of dieselbilly classics, rockers, and country weepers to take the edge off the holiday fuss. So mark your calendars and check ’em twice – Santa Claus is back in town!
Bill Kirchen is touring with Jack Saunders on bass and Rick Richards on drums.
Guitar Player Magazine dubbed Bill Kirchen the “Titan of the Telecaster.” Rolling Stone said he’s “an American treasure” and “one of our best.” No matter what you call him, Kirchen is a founding father of the Americana movement, now at the peak of his impressive career.

Kirchen was originally known as co-founder and lead guitarist of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, one of the first and only rock-n-roll bands to infuse their honky-tonk sound with pure, blood-and-guts country roots and western swing. It was Kirchen’s scorching guitar licks that helped define their sound and drove their hit, “Hot Rod Lincoln,” into the Top Ten in 1972, a song that eventually took on a post-Cody life of its own. Today, Kirchen’s extended version of “Hot Rod Lincoln” is his universally loved signature masterpiece, a pumped-up joyride through the last 60 years of guitar-god history, described as “epic” by Rolling Stone.
In 2001, Kirchen received a Grammy nomination for his instrumental “Poultry in Motion.” The following year he was inducted into the Washington Area Music Association Hall of Fame, neatly sandwiched between John Phillip Sousa and Dave Grohl. Kirchen has recorded and/or played guitar live with a who’s who of Americana and Roots Rock ‘N’ Roll, among them Gene Vincent, Link Wray, Bo Diddley, Hazel Dickens, Doug Sahm, Hoyt Axton, Emmylou Harris, Maria Muldaur, Dan Hicks, and Nick Lowe. Bill is pretty sure that he is the only person to have, in a single year, stood on stage and played with both Ralph Stanley and Elvis Costello.
