Artrageous is a troupe of misfits artists, singers, dancer and musicians who started as friends doing street theatre in Vancouver. Together they started the All and Everything Theater, a non-profit Children’s Theater focusing on Children’s Entertainment, Street Theater and Life-sized Bunraku Puppetry. In the late 80’s on Christmas Day, their hand built theater building, with all their props and puppets, burnt to the ground. Instead of packing it in, they created a new act; this troupe has performed for the likes of Sir Richard Branson, Steve Forbes, General Colin Powell… and in venues and events all over the world from India to Thailand, Paris to Austria performing at over 2000+ events in their History. As people who live and breathe the Arts, Creativity, Community, and Inspiration, they created ARTrageous to pay tribute to their roots and share their passion with the world. A Show that focuses on all the things they believe in and everything that got them to this place. Art, Music, Theater, Singing, Dancing, Audience Interaction- all on one stage. All done as a team of friends seeing the world and sharing a love of the Arts. Imagine witnessing the creativity of an artist creating a masterpiece before your eyes in mere moments. Combined with captivating vocals, intricate choreography and exciting music, Artrageous takes you on a visual journey and a high energy ride of inspiration, creativity, and engagement. The ARTrageous troupe of artist, musicians, singers and dancers pay tribute to a variety of art forms, icons and musical genres throughout the evening. The result ~ A uniquely entertaining, masterpiece show culminating in a gallery of fabulous finished paintings. A signature of the Artrageous Troupe, from the very beginning of their long history, is interaction and engagement… so be prepared to be a part of the show. LaZoom Comedy: Mike Lebovitz (Saturday Night)
Sep 28 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm
LaZoom Room

Mike Lebovitz began his comedy career at the age of six with clowning classes at the local JCC. He’s been delighting crowds with his intoxicating brand of wild-eyed humor ever since. Mike’s irreverent bar-stool philosophy careens from topic to topic like a runaway freight train with some dubious couplings. Audiences have described the experience as “spontaneous,” “joyful’ and “slightly terrifying.”
Mike cut his teeth in Chicago (not as painful as it sounds), where he was a regular at Zanies Comedy Club, The Laugh Factory and Comedy Bar Chicago. He co-founded the popular showcase, Comedians You Should Know, which he brought to New York City in 2016. It has since become the weekly go-to spot to see comedy legends and up-and-comers rock the same mic.
Internationally, Mike has offended nostrils in Montreal as a “New Face” of the 2013 Just For Laughs, and he won The Montreux Comedy Festival competition in Switzerland. He’s been featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central, and HBO’s The Deuce. Look for his debut album, LEBO, in early 2019 on Stand Up Records.

Non Profits: Junior League 3rd Annual Volunteer Expo is Now Accepting Applications
Sep 29 all-day
accepting applications

The Junior League of Asheville, Inc. (JLA) will hold its third annual Volunteer Expo, on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Crowne Plaza Expo Center from 10am to 3pm. Modeled after a job fair, this free event will feature more than 70 local nonprofits looking to fill ongoing and future volunteer needs. Nonprofits in almost every area of community concern will be present at the event: health, poverty, legal aid, environmental stewardship, women’s issues, arts, civic leadership, technology, education and animal welfare.

Excitement for the Volunteer Expo continues to grow, with nonprofit participation growing year over year.  The 2019 event featured over 70 non-profits with attendance at well over 1,000 community members coming to network and sign up to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.

The 2020 Volunteer Expo will be accepting applications starting in September. Due to the increase in interest for booths at the Expo, this year the League plans to review all applications received instead of awarding booths on a first come first serve basis.  They hope this will ensure a good mix of volunteer opportunities in a variety of service areas as well as allow new nonprofits the chance to have a booth at the event.  There will be a silent auction fundraiser, Cheers to Volunteers, the evening before the Volunteer Expo from 6pm to 9pm at the Masonic Temple in downtown Asheville.  All community members are invited to attend both events. If you are a nonprofit interested in participating in the 2020 Volunteer Expo, please email us at [email protected].

3rd Annual Marcus King Band Family Reunion
Sep 29 @ 12:00 am – 3:59 am
Pisgah Brewing Company

FINAL ROUND OF ARTISTS ANNOUNCED!
3rd Annual Marcus King Band Family Reunion
Friday September 27 – Saturday September 28, 2019
Pisgah Brewing Company Black Mountain, NC
*******************************
Soulful rock explosion The Marcus King Band have announced the lineup for their third annual festival, The Marcus King Band Family Reunion, happening September 27 & 28, 2019 at Pisgah Brewing Company in Western North Carolina.

For initial lineup – alt-country pioneers Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, americana troubadour Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band, fiddle-playing songstress Amanda Shires, indie rockers FUTUREBIRDS, plus Los Coast, and Charlie Overbey Music & The Broken Arrows join festival namesake The Marcus King Band performing two sets over the multi-day event.

The second and final round of artist announcements include jamgrass stalwarts Yonder Mountain String Band, six-headed synthwave beast Doom Flamingo, the uniquely gifted guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Doyle Bramhall II, the feel good music of Andy Frasco & the U.N., and we also need some funk, so we’ll have the Nigel Hall Band joining us as well. Rounding out the lineup are Asheville based acts, Mimi Naja (of Fruition) and local legend Josh Blake’s Organ Trio (J.B.O.T.).

“Each year Family Reunion grows more and more while still maintaining the festival’s original concept,” says curator Marcus King. Family Reunion is about “bringing together our families – the brothers and sisters we’ve come to know on the road, for a weekend of breaking bread, making music, and fellowship. We hope to see all of YOU at the annual Family Reunion this year.”

The Marcus King Band Family Reunion returns to Pisgah Brewing Company, just 20 minutes east of Asheville, right when the mountain air begins to feel a little cooler and the leaves begin their colorful display. Previous years of Family Reunion have included performances from Blackberry Smoke, The Revivalists, Billy Strings, Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, and more. This year, the event continues in soulful swagger and will boast an even more sophisticated lineup of heavy hitters in the alt-country and americana genres. Acts will perform on two stages including the intimate, open-air indoor taproom stage and the naturally set outdoor stage featuring a Blue Ridge Mountain backdrop.

Marcus King comes from a long lineage of talented musicians and has been writing and performing onstage for half of his lifetime. He has been earning widespread acclaim as a guitar virtuoso with his band (The Marcus King Band), who recently released their third studio album Carolina Confessions, last fall. The 10-track LP, produced and mixed by #Grammy-award winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, @Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) topped #Americana charts nationwide and received critical acclaim from the likes of VICE Noisey (“astounding and triumphant”), NPR (“tenacious and vulnerable”), and more.

At only 23 years of age, King is already selling out venues and establishing himself as an “electrifying rock performer” (Rolling Stone). Just this past weekend, the band’s live-steamed three-night run at Brooklyn Bowl sold out in advance, and later this summer, the group will embark on a string of dates with multi-Grammy winner Chris Stapleton. King, who recently relocated to Nashville with his bandmates, has received nods for helping to bridge the gap between country music and rock n’ roll and continues to turn heads with his blistering brand of soulful rock.

The Orange Peel

RIDE
Show: 9pm
Doors: 8pm
$25 – $30
Ages 18+

Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/event/ride/

Andy Bell, Mark Gardener, Loz Colbert and Steve Queralt formed Ride in Oxford in 1988. A defining act of the shoegaze scene and signed to Creation Records in 1989, they went on to release four albums: ‘Nowhere’, ‘Going Blank Again’, ‘Carnival of Light’ and ‘Tarantula’.

After a lengthy hiatus, Ride reformed in 2014. Comprised of Andy Bell, Mark Gardener, Loz Colbert, and Steve Queralt, the band sold out headline tours around the world to a plethora of critical acclaim, as well as show stopping turns at festivals including Coachella, Primavera and Field Day.

Produced by Erol Alkan, new album ‘Weather Diaries’ is packed with all the classic elements that made Ride one of the defining bands of the early ‘90s. Trembling distortion, beautiful harmonies, pounding rhythms, shimmering soundscapes and great songwriting all combine to make an album that’s ambitious in scope, timeless and thoroughly addictive. The album is out now through Wichita Recordings and sees the band reunited with label co-founders Dick Green and Mark Bowen, who worked with Ride during the band’s early years on Creation Records. It also brings the band back together with mixer Alan Moulder (Arctic Monkeys, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers) who mixed their seminal 1990 album ‘Nowhere’ and produced it’s follow up ‘Going Blank Again’.

SeepeopleS

The anti-genre indie pranksters SeepeopleS have been a band for 17 years. The band, which is the brainchild of bandleader/songwriter/producer Will Bradford, has released 5 full length albums and 2 EPs on their own imprint, RascalZRecordZ. It would be an accurate statement to say that there isn’t a single band on the planet that covers as much ground musically, or traverses through as many musical universes as SeepeopleS does. Musicians have long since taken notice and members of Morphine, Spearhead, Dave Matthews Band (Tim Reynolds), and even members of Parliament/Funkadelic and Lynyrd Skynyrd are featured on previous albums. All seven records were co-produced by Will Holland (Pixies, New Pornographers, Dead Can Dance) The band has toured ceaselessly, playing over 1500 shows in 46 states during their long career. Most importantly, SeepeopleS features songwriting that is the definition of timelessness and lyrically have been busy writing the most important musical anthems of our generation. It may be long after our lifetimes before this band gets their due, but they certainly will. Nothing this good can remain hidden forever.

As far as “hype” goes, the band was recently nominated for “Best Live Act” for the 2016 New England Music Awards. Other nominations include “Best New Artist” (Relix Magazine Awards 2007).The band has shared the stage and toured with such acts as Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Cracker, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Ben Harper, Kula Shaker, Presidents of the United States and have even had Jon Fishman (Phish) join the band for a SeepeopleS set during a Bernie Sanders rally. They have been featured in Pop Matters, Magnet, Exclaim, High Times, Relix. DRUM Magazine, Blue Walrus and now Daytrotter, to name a short few. Their music has been used on Judging Amy (TNT), The Gates (ABC), and in feature films such as ‘Canvasman,’ and ‘Wheels Over Paradise,’ as well as on the Discovery Channel and NASCAR broadcasts. They provided most of the music for the Headcount (voting registration) documentary ‘Call To Action’ and have played CMJ, SXSW, as well as a major music festivals’ Wakarusa and Allgood Music Festival.

Recently the band released their newest EP, ‘HATE’ in 2017 as well as a brand new video animated by Pete List (Celebrity Death Match/MTV, Marilyn Manson). The band has been on tour for the past couple years in support of their triple series of EP releases, ‘LOVE,’ ‘HATE,’ and ‘LIVE,’ which is scheduled for release this Christmas. All three EPs will be released digitally with some bonus tracks as ‘SeepeopleS LOVE HATE LIVE’ at that time as well.

LET’S BUILD THIS COMMUNITY!

Please join us every last Sunday of the month for our Local BARK Market, hosted by our friends at pleb Urban Winery. We will be featuring an array of locally made goods, rotating food trucks, delicious wine, donation based training booth, and of course some adoptable PUPS! A percentage of the proceeds will go directly towards helping the animals in our care.

We are still accepting new Vendors, so if you are interested in posting up, spending the day with like minded community, and are hoping to support our Woof Meow Rescue mission please reach out to [email protected]. More details on participating vendors coming soon.

We are looking forward to spending the day with you!
