“Dressing for the Occasion” offers visitors a window into the style, culture, and feel of mid-century America. The family’s clothing and accessories weave together the roles of Carl Sandburg as a prominent writer, celebrity, father, and husband. This temporary exhibit offers an exciting opportunity for the public to view objects that are normally in storage or in the possession of Sandburg family members. Tours of the Sandburg Home are offered daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Tickets are available first come, first served, each day from the visitor information area in the ground level of the Sandburg Home.

Nearly every room in the historically furnished house museum will be included in the exhibit. Visitors will see the characteristic scarves Carl Sandburg wore as he played his guitar and sang folk songs to entertain his family and guests, the dress Lilian Sandburg wore to meet President Lyndon B. Johnson, and many other mid-century pieces worn by the Sandburgs and their daughters. Historic photographs, paired with the clothing, will provide context.

The Buncombe County Public Library system is supporting Asheville writers during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) by offering quiet writing spaces, raffle prizes, and a NaNoWriMo NoMo’ party in early December.

NaNoWriMo is a writing challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel during the thirty days of November. It began in 1999 and is supported by an international nonprofit organization of the same name.

The Black Mountain Library, Leicester Library, Pack Library, North Asheville Library, South Buncombe Library, and West Asheville Library will all be offering quiet spaces for writers to work on their 50,000 word count goal throughout the month. Some branches will offer tea, coffee and snacks as well. The Pack Library Youth Services department will host a Teen Writer’s Café every Friday afternoon. “We wanted to have a space at a library in the county every day where a writer could come plug in their laptop or pull out their notebook and chip away at their word count with no interruptions,” Anna Booraem, Branch Manager of the South Buncombe Library, says.

Each time a writer comes to one of the library writing spaces to work on their novel in November, they will be entered into a raffle for prizes to be given away at the NanoWrimo NoMo’ party. The raffle prizes will include treats from local businesses, including Dynamite Coffee, as well as some official NaNoWriMo swag.

The NaNoWriMo NoMo’ party will be held at the Lord Auditorium in the Pack Library on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 2-3:30 pm. The party is for any writer who participated in NaNoWriMo. There will be food, activities and opportunities to meet other writers, as well as a “micro mic” that will give each writer a chance to read one paragraph from their novel to the group.

Explore just how far back our fiber art roots go by viewing centuries old textiles alongside contemporary works. Partnering archives reveal the cultural impact cloth and making have played in our region, while local makers of today continue to investigate place, process, and storytelling through the manipulation of fibrous materials. Techniques include weaving, embroidery, appliqué, natural dyeing, pulled-work, bobbin lace, and quilting.

ATS® Level 1 – Dance Fundamentals
This is an on-going class series. You’ll learn the basic system of ATS® in a fun and supportive environment. Dance Fundamentals will have you dancing ATS® in your very first class! Each one hour class is divided into two sections.

1. Drill it – Learn the basic movements of ATS® with minimal verbal instruction and lots of following along, committing the steps to muscle memory with a fun workout-style drills.
2. Dance it – Experience the magic of ATS® and learn how to use the basic steps to dance with partners in a duet, trio, and quartet formations.

You can start this on-going class series at anytime and drop-in for drills and review.

ATS® (American Tribal Style) Belly Dance is an improv tribal style belly dance that is universal worldwide with every move having a certain cue with a leader and followers in a duet, trio, or quartet formation that is always changing leads. The beauty of ATS® is a strong Flamenco influence, along with India and North Africa dance, combined into tribal style belly dance. If you know ATS® you can dance with anyone in the world that also knows ATS®, even just meeting for the first time!

Bio
Michelle has been dancing ATS® (American Tribal Style) since 2006. She has taken countless ATS® workshop classes around the United States to further her education, knowledge, and skill of ATS®. Michelle received her ATS® Teaching Certification in 2015, and had her own troupe, Mystique Mountain Tribal Belly Dance, in Charlotte before moving to the Black Mountain area.

The ACW Cat Pantry will be set up at the Thrift Hound to hand out cat food, litter, non prescription flea and worm medication, and other donations we may have available. Each month on the 2nd Tuesday, and 4th Saturday, as the calendar allows.

The community is invited to attend Voter ID Public Seminars. Beginning in 2020, voters will be required to provide photo identification before they vote. This includes both in-person and by-mail voting, with some exceptions. The Buncombe County Board of Elections is teaming up with the libraries to hold educational seminars about voter photo identification requirements. The seminars are free and open to the public.

Each month, we are honored to be a community partner to a local non-profit that is working to make Asheville a better place. Over the past year we have supported the following non-profits who are making a difference in our community: Pisgah Legal Services, Mountain Child Advocacy Center, Asheville City Schools Foundation, Helpmate, The Montford Players, Asheville Choral Society, Asheville Symphony, BeLoved, Food Connection, The Montford Neighborhood Association, Immediate Theatre Project, The Asheville Humane Society, Western North Carolina Aids Project, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.

Great food in Montford and when diners leave donations for the Literacy Council, Chiesa will match up to $500!

Chiesa (Italian for church) is a quaint Italian restaurant featuring generations of family recipes, house-made pasta, and local ingredients. Located in the historic Montford neighborhood, Chiesa (pronounced kee-ay-sa) is housed in a building that has been at the center of the community for over one hundred years, serving as the local grocery store, then as a church, and since 2014, the neighborhood Italian restaurant. In true pub fashion, The White Horse has hosts a traditional Irish style session every Tuesday night. Sessions are in many ways the heart and soul of Irish traditional music, a place for players to share tunes and socialize. It’s not a performance, but rather an informal situation in which listeners are welcome to participate, whether offering encouragement, singing along on a chorus, or asking questions about the music and instruments. White Horse sessions regularly draws players from as far away as Waynesville, Cullowhee, Rutherfordton and even Clayton, Georgia.

We’ve been talking to the folks from Bardic Alchemy, a Celtic Rock band from Asheville and they’ve agreed to play at Triskelion as many Tuesdays as they can come down to the Brewery.

Bardic Alchemy is a brand new element in the Celtic Rock world. This trio, based in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Connell Sanderson, guitarist Nick Marcone and percussionist and vocalist Tyler Watts.

Bardic Alchemy is best described as a psychedelic trip into a musical world that is heavily inspired by the Celtic musical traditions…run through various effects pedals. Everything from soothing, mellifluously reverberating whistle melodies supported by groovy guitar lines and thumping djembe beats to high energy dance tunes on the Scottish and Irish pipes to three part vocal harmonies and even improvised pieces, Bardic Alchemy is a surprisingly dynamic and unpredictable musical journey.

Silkroad musicians and composers hail from more than 20 countries, drawing on a rich tapestry of traditions to create a new musical language — a uniquely engaging and accessible encounter between the foreign and the familiar that reflects our many-layered contemporary identities. The Los Angeles Times said Silkroad’s “vision of international cooperation is not what we read in our daily news reports. Theirs is the better world available if we, like these extraordinary musicians, agree to make it one.”

Appearing in many configurations and settings, the Silkroad Ensemble has performed in more than 100 cities in over 30 countries and recorded seven albums. Its 2016 release, Sing Me Home, won the Grammy® Award for Best World Music Album. The Music of Strangers, a documentary about the ensemble directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015 and was released worldwide in 2016.
