Few Independence Day images are as iconically American as a community band playing on the village green. From the legendary Sousa Band to talented amateur ensembles, symphonic bands have tackled instrumental repertoire ranging from stirring marches to orchestral transcriptions to celebrate our national holiday.
Located right across the street from Black Mountain’s picturesque Town Square, the patio of the White Horse Black Mountain is a prime vantage point for viewing the town’s firework display following a rafter-raising, soul-stirring concert by the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band on Tuesday, July 4.
Founded in 1990 as a way of reuniting Enka High School alumni with their band director, the community band is the result of the high level of interest area residents had in being part of a wind ensemble like they played in in college and high school.
Through many changes of membership and directors, a core group persevered, raising standards by remaining small and choosing members by invitation or audition. Today, the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band is a 43-piece ensemble made up of skilled amateur and professional musicians.
David Wilken, the current musical director, is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University. He earned his master of music in jazz studies from DePaul University and his doctor of arts in trombone performance from Ball State University. He’s held teaching positions at several colleges and universities and is currently an instructor of music at Western Carolina University.
The YWCA recently learned that our aging HVAC system can no longer reliably heat and cool our building. This means more than discomfort for members and staff – we are required to maintain a consistent and healthy temperature in the building for the well-being and safety of the children in our childcare programs. We are asking for your help to address the immediate need for $60k to replace the first five of our 24 HVAC units and ensure that both of our Childcare programs can continue to provide accessible childcare to working families and the work of the YWCA can continue without disruption.
LEAF SUMMER CAMPS
IN FULL SWING!LEAF Schools & Streets invites your students to join us at LEAF Global Arts for summer camp. We are offering multiple camps which will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LEAF Global Arts at 19 Eagle Street in Downtown Asheville.
Scholarships are available! Qualifications include:
- Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch
- Two of more siblings attending the same week of camp
- Students registering for 4+ LEAF Summer Camps in 2023 (must pay in full)

Snacks will be provided, and students should bring a peanut free bagged lunch and a water bottle to camp each day, and wear clothes and shoes they can move in.
In addition to the main focus of the camp, each week will explore elements of theater art, music, and dance from around the world.

PAUL EDELMAN
Nearly born on the airplane from Columbus to Philly, The Jangling Sparrow has cultivated a passionate, loyal following with provocative lyrics and moving performances.
To date, Paul has shared bills with Scott Miller, Robert Earl Kean, James McMurtry, Neko Case, Big Sandy, Langhorne Slim, Patty Larkin, Drive-by Truckers, The Sadies, Slim Cessna, Bottle Rockets, Grayson Capps, among many others.
Paul Edelman has worked with some of the industries greatest names, he has recorded with Jimmy Johnson (founder Muscle Shoals Studio), Nashville session staple drummer, Martin Parker (Ricky Scaggs, Alison Krauss, Patti Loveless) and keyboardist Steve Fordham (Mavis Staples).
Paul relocated to Asheville, N.C. In 2008 where he quickly grabbed winner of the Flat Rock Music Festival songwriter competition

the Asheville Guitar Bar, a discussion series provides deeper understanding
and greater enjoyment of classic albums and recording artists. Led by
Asheville author and music journalist Bill Kopp, Music to Your Ears is an
interactive experience that shines a light on important music and people.
Music to Your Ears is a 90-minute conversation, held at the Guitar Bar, a
music magnet in Asheville’s historic River Arts District. The July 5 event is a
listening party and discussion focusing on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders
from Mars, the classic 1972 album from David Bowie.
David Bowie was already some eight-plus into his career as a musician and
recording artist when he created the landmark album The Rise and Fall of
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The 1972 LP – his fifth – represented an artistic breakthrough. Though he had
already scored hit albums and singles in the UK and the United States, Ziggy Stardust brought him to prominence globally. The
album’s loose concept centering around a cosmic rock ‘n’ roller gave rise to a compelling stage show, with Bowie adopting the
first of a succession of onstage personae. And the music on Ziggy Stardust – from the hit single “Starman” to beloved tracks
like “Suffragette City” and the album’s title track – influenced glam rock and the punk movement that was soon to come.
More than a half-century after its release, Ziggy Stardust continues to amaze and inspire listeners. Most recently, D.A.
Pennebaker’s concert film from Bowie’s 1973 tour in support of the album has been re-released to theaters, renewing interest
in the million-selling music. A timeless album, Ziggy Stardust sounds as fresh and vital today as it did 50-plus years ago.
Now there’s an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate Ziggy Stardust with fellow music lovers. Author and music journalist
Bill Kopp will be joined by Mark Casson – singer, musician and songwriter for The Cheeksters as well as long-time leader of
tribute group Wham Bam Bowie Band – for an evening of listening and conversation about Ziggy Stardust. Casson may even
sing and play a song or two from the classic album. The evening is the latest installment of the popular “Music to Your Ears’
discussion series, hosted by Asheville guitar Bar and sponsored by AshevilleFM.
Join host and music journalist Bill Kopp for an evening in discussion with Mark Casson about David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
We’ll listen to key tracks from the album, and encourage questions from the audience.

Founded in 1991, we are Warren Wilson College’s educational program of summer folk arts workshops held on our campus in the Swannanoa Valley near Asheville in the heart of North Carolina’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
Each year, we offer a variety of week-long programs in various forms of folk music and dance over a five-week period in July and August, taught by some of the finest folk artists and instructors in the world.

Join us on Thursday, July 6th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery, located downtown on Biltmore Ave, for an exclusive preview party of their upcoming gallery opening, Summer Salon, on July 7th! This event is hosted by Michael Manes (co-owner/Executive Dir.) and Blair Guggenheim (Asst. Dir.), two dynamic young professionals who run the gallery.
The Summer Salon exhibition will be showcasing vibrant new works by a selection of esteemed BS1 artists. This diverse group exhibition features artists working in various mediums, including glass, painting, collage, basketry, metal, and mixed media sculpture. Come celebrate and explore the unique styles, techniques, and concepts expressed in the artists’ latest creations.
The Summer Salon will be held on the main level gallery, featuring works by talented artists such as Alex Bernstein, Robert Burch, Clay Burnette, Thomas Campbell, Andrew Hayes, Duy Huynh, Isaac Payne, Jeremy Russell, and Jon Sours. Their captivating pieces will be on display from July 7th to August 23rd, 2023.
During the preview party, we’ll provide complimentary drinks and food for you to enjoy as you immerse yourself in the artistic ambiance of one of Asheville’s finest galleries. It’s an excellent opportunity to network, meet new people, and appreciate the local art scene. There is no specific dress code, but most attendees will likely be coming from work in business attire.

For this year’s Pritchard Park Songwriter Series, the Asheville Association is teaming up with Paloma Madre who are best known for bringing Asheville the wildly successful, international concept, Open Folk. Each week will feature two world class songwriters from our community playing introspective and honest tunes about life in the 21st century. Pritchard Park will once again be filled with the sweet sounding songs of heartbreak, true love, heavy loss, and lots and lots of goofin. It’s a guaranteed good time that won’t cost you a dime!!
Lettuce & Steel Pulse will be performing LIVE on the Outdoor Stage at Salvage Station on July 6th, 2023 along with Makua Rothman! Doors open at 5:30PM and the music starts at 6:30PM. An open jam session follows. Drop-ins are welcome and encouraged for a suggested donation of $10.

Wanna hear the best local music and drink the best local beers? Hop aboard LaZoom’s Purple Bus and rock out with a local band while we take you on a journey to Asheville’s premiere local breweries.
The Scatterlings are a four-piece acoustic/Americana band based in Asheville, North Carolina. The members share a fondness for songs about heartbreak, whiskey, and killings, although they promise they are actually all very peaceful people. Many of their original songs offer masterful personal storytelling, while others are steeped deep in local history. The Scatterlings are: Elfy Kornfeld on lead vocals and baritone ukulele, Terrell Jones on upright bass and harmony vocals, Brad Pope on guitar and mandolin, and Kevin Gary on guitar, mandolin, and fiddle.

APPALACHIAN RENEGADES
The beats of the Friday Night Drum Circle have been rocking Pritchard Park for decades and the circle has become so popular that it is featured in magazines and TV commercials.
The Friday Night Music series will present the familiar 50’s and 60’s
classic rock and beach music from a host of different bands. Food vendors like Babbles Ice
Cream, Blue Ridge Hospitality and Eggs Up Grill will provide a some spice. The Carolina
Mountain Car Club will participate as in years past.

Curry is an original roots rock singer/songwriter from Bloomington, Illinois, who is well- known for his incredible guitar-playing abilities. This talent has earned him opening touring slots with The Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, Steve Miller Band, Journey and more.
