Explore Grandfather Mountain after hours with your own personal guides. You’ll discover some of the park’s nighttime wonders, while stopping at its most significant sites. Watch a stunning Grandfather sunset, and experience the mountain as never before!
Meet at entrance gate at 8 PM. In-park transportation is provided. Next stop is atop Grandfather Mountain and its world-famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, where you explore and observe sunset from a mile high. Meanwhile, park educators will be on hand to discuss the unique flora and crepuscular (active during twilight) fauna that call Grandfather home.
Next stop is a visit lower on the mountain to take a brief, guided night hike. Encounter and learn about such nocturnal creatures as owls, salamanders, fireflies and more. Limited to 24 participants.

This event is accessible for those in a wheelchair. Grandfather Mountain’s vehicle fleet includes a 12–seat shuttle that has a 1,000 lb. What to Bring?
Much of your time will be spent outdoors and all programs are held rain, snow or shine. You should be prepared for a variety of mountain weather conditions and temperatures. Appropriate clothing, equipment, and footwear are very important. You’ll need a jacket on many summer evenings!

Jody Carroll McMurrian was born on April 5 1968 in an area called the San Joaquin Delta of California. It’s a vast water filled area where the Antioch River, the Old River, The San Joaquin River and the Sacramento River all meet up to pour into the San Francisco Bay. His family hails from the hills of Buffalo Valley Oklahoma via Arkansas on his fathers side and Amarillo Texas on his mothers side.
Jody Carroll grew up hearing whispers of old American music on the radio or from his fathers guitar. His father started him off with a couple Willie Nelson songs and plenty of AM country radio. His grandfather, who also played guitar when he was young, had come from the remote rural Buffalo Valley hills of Oklahoma 20 years earlier with his family in tow. He and his brothers had been running whiskey in those hills one to many times and had been effectively asked to leave the state by the law. JC’s grandfather left town and made his way over to California and then up to the bay area for work in the ship yards of Port Chicago. Jody grew up in the 70’s and 80’s working on the families Northern California farm, building barns, riding horses, drawing, learning music from old blues, folk, Rock and Soul records.
His first guitar was his father’s steel guitar that had languished for many years up in the attic until he found it. After secretly playing it for a while, he asked his father to teach him some old folk tunes that he had played in his early years and some lap slide licks. He took to it like a fish devouring all he could learn from the family record collection. After many years of playing in garage rock bands, he happened upon the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music and the recordings of Robert Johnson. That sealed the deal as it where, he took off into the back woods of old weird America and never looked back.

Together for just over a year, they have played contemporary art museums, all ages venues, open mics, and house parties.

Lifeguard is a punk-band-power-trio. Emerging out of the young and exciting windy city DIY scene with the likes of Horsegirl, Post Office Winter, and Friko, Lifeguard have become a part of a cultural moment. Though the members are all still in high school, they are on the forefront of a younger generation taking old music, understanding what made it great, applying it to their art and pushing it in the future. This isn’t a nostalgia act, this is a band for now, distilling lessons learned from SST, Dischord and Sub Pop and channeling it into fury and anxiety for the modern world. – Joe Trainor
After some folk/country directions on their 2021 EP, Big Fall, Philadelphia country band rock band Florry is back with their Dear Life debut, the four song Sweet Guitar Solos. Whoever gave them those directions did a pretty good job because on their new EP they definitely seem like they’ve gotten to where they needed to be.
Culled from various outtakes recorded between 2021 and 2022, the band slips and slides from a four-piece lineup to a seven-piece band with two- three guitars, fiddle, pedal steel, and vocal accompaniment. The band does a lot of things, such as raggedy alt country, cowpunk, and country rock, but mostly they have fun.
On an electric version of 2021 track Big Fall is frontwoman Francie Medosch, bassist Jared Radichel, second guitarist John Murray, and drummer Joey Sullivan. When I Kicked You Out of the Band (I Wasn’t Kicking You Out Of My Life) sees the band add vocal accompanist/acoustic guitar player Victoria Rose and fiddle player Will Henriksen, with Murray on lap steel. The band finally lands on their current lineup with Cowgirl in a Ditch, with Murray back on guitar and Sam Silbert on pedal steel. The band also covers Lisa’s Birthday from the Drive-By Truckers.

We accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length, your piece may be grouped with another show, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public, and artists receive a stipend for their performance, rather than relying on door sales.

Budget cuts, increased testing requirements, and narrowing of curricula have significantly impacted school districts’ ability to provide inclusive, high-quality visual and performing arts experiences. And, while some families are able to subsidize children’s exposure to performing, visual, and fine arts experiences, students living in poverty face numerous systemic barriers which make such access nearly, if not entirely, impossible.
The Arts for Schools grant helps nonprofit arts organizations and qualified teaching artists in Buncombe County provide arts focused performances, workshops, residencies, and field trips for students attending K-12 public schools in Buncombe County. Priority is given to proposals benefiting economically disadvantaged schools and/or underserved communities, ensuring that students from all demographics receive the benefits of these programs. Multicultural programs will also receive priority. Grants range from $500-$1,000.

Our Community and Economic Development staff is addressing housing in Asheville by looking at what we call “missing middle housing”. “Missing middle housing” refers to housing types, such as duplexes, triplexes, or townhomes, that can be said to have largely been missing from the residential housing market over the last 70 years. You can describe middle residential as housing types that live in the middle of two common and well-known housing options: Single-family homes and large-scale multi-family housing apartment buildings.

Attend a workshop : August 4, 2023
Another approaching engagement opportunity will be a public workshop to be held next month. The free workshop will be an open-house format where attendees can drop in anytime between 4 – 7 p.m. on August 4th at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center’s Banquet Hall (87 Haywood Street, Asheville, NC 28801). Attendees will learn more about missing middle housing and how it can help to expand housing choice, increase entry-level home ownership opportunities, help homeowners to build generational wealth and passive income, and enable local ownership and neighborhood-driven investment.
The workshop is a family-friendly event that will include a series of stations for participants to learn and discuss specific housing-related topics. At each station there will be an opportunity to give feedback that will help guide the final Missing Middle Housing report. This report will ultimately make recommendations to help Asheville prioritize next steps for regulatory changes and strategies that support more housing choices in Asheville. Topics that will be highlighted at the workshop include:

Be a Community Scientist by Participating in NC State Tick Study

Are you a community scientist itching to contribute to a North Carolina study? NC State University is conducting a study about human exposure to ticks in North Carolina and is partnering with Buncombe County Public Health to help distribute tick collection kits.
Participants should be 18 years or older and would be required to collect ticks, complete a survey, and send their findings via mail.
The study will evaluate a community science approach to tick surveillance and exposure risk in North Carolina.
Study Details
Participants will only submit ticks pulled off of themselves (not animals)
Each tick kit should come from the same time and location, use different kits for other times and locations
No information will be shared and participants will not be identified from their responses
Kits will be sent back to researchers in a provided return envelope
There is no pay for participation
Tick kits can be picked up at 30 Valley Street in Asheville. Each kit will include a postage-paid envelope, two collection vials, instructions for collecting ticks, and a survey for participants to complete.
NCSU cannot provide information on pathogens that may be within the tick nor medical advice or recommendations.

The Chamber Music Society of the Carolinas (CMS Carolinas), formerly the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival, was founded in 1970 by Lili Kraus, one of the foremost pianists of the time.
CMS Carolinas is a beloved chamber music festival fostering shared experiences of joy, creativity and transcendence through world-class chamber music. In a series of twelve concerts during the month of July, CMS Carolinas is pleased to share exceptional classical music performances with a wide audience in three magnificent venues – Asheville, NC; Waynesville, NC; and Greenville, SC.
Musicians
CMS Carolinas is able to welcome widely beloved and internationally acclaimed musicians from all over the world to its annual four-week season. These musicians come to the mountains of North Carolina each year to collaborate with each other and share their passion with the audiences.

City of Asheville implements changes to leaf bag collection beginning August 1

The City of Asheville is committed to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing plastic waste.
As part of these efforts, the City will be implementing a new ordinance, effective August 1, 2023, that prohibits the use of plastic bags for brush and leaf collection.
This regulation is in accordance with the Asheville Code of Ordinances, Chapter 15 §38(h). To assist with this transition, the City has provided paper yard waste bags for residents to sample. These are available at multiple locations. Reusable containers marked yard waste are also possible options. For more information regarding the change, visit the City’s website.
The City has provided information on alternative disposal methods on its website. One of the simplest and most efficient ways to manage loose leaves is through composting. Residents can use a mulching mower to run over the leaves, allowing them to compost directly into the lawn. Another option is to rake the leaves into a compost pile, which will decompose over time and serve as a beneficial soil additive for gardening purposes. Our Farm Beginnings Program is specifically designed for those who are just starting out in the farming industry. Whether you dream of owning your own farm or are eager to cultivate your agricultural skills, this program is tailor-made for you. Over the course of 12 months, we will provide you with comprehensive training, hands-on experience, and invaluable mentorship from seasoned farmers. You’ll learn everything from sustainable farming practices to business planning, setting you up for success right from the beginning. This 12-month program runs from October 2023 to September 2024.
For established farm businesses seeking to enhance their operations and expand their horizons, our Journeyperson Program is the perfect fit. This program is specifically crafted to assist farmers who have been in the industry for at least 3 years and are ready to take their businesses to new heights. Through a combination of advanced workshops, one-on-one coaching, and networking opportunities, we will help you refine your existing skills, explore innovative farming techniques, and connect with industry experts. Join us on this transformative journey as we support you every step of the way. This 12-month program starts in November 2023 and ends in November 2024.

Food Scraps Drop Off
The City of Asheville, in partnership with Buncombe County and the Natural Resources Defense Council, is offering a FREE Food Scrap Drop-Off program in two locations for all Buncombe County residents. This organic matter will be collected and turned into good clean compost, keeping it OUT of our landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Need a handy kitchen countertop food scrap bin? Let us know on the registration form! We’ll be having bin giveaways at city and county facilities and would love to give you one.

Since 1977, the N.C. Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. The program distributes funds for the arts in all 100 counties of the state primarily through partnerships with local arts councils. Grassroots Arts Program funds may be used for expenditures to conduct quality arts programs or operate an arts organization.

Need Help With Water Bills? New Water Assistance Program Could Offer Help.

If you’re behind on your water bill or afraid your water might get cut off, a new resource might be able to help you. On Jan. 4, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners approved more than $450,000 in federal funding for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The initiative is aimed at preventing water disconnections and helping reconnect drinking and wastewater services.
The LIHWAP will be administered by Buncombe County-based Eblen Charities. The nonprofit will make payments directly to utilities on behalf of qualifying households. The program is slated to run through Sept. 30, 2023 or until funds are exhausted.
Eligibility requirements
Households that currently receive Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Work First services, or those that received Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) services from Oct. 1, 2020-Sept. 30, 2021, are automatically eligible to receive this benefit if their water services have been cut off or are in danger of being cut off.
