Join us for Summer Art Camp To Go! Sessions are available for K–12 students. Each weekly session includes several age-appropriate art projects using a variety of materials to engage students in an exploration of art through creativity and imagination. Enrollment is limited, and registration is required.Registration includes instructional videos for each project, art materials, and daily virtual classes. Virtual classes—beginning at 10am via Zoom—include time for inspiration, Q&A, and sharing. Streaming instructional videos and creative challenges are designed to provide hours of creative engagement at your own pace each day. Instinctive meditation means it’s natural and our bodies are wired to do it easily and efficiently. All we need to do is to set up the right conditions and our bodies will eagerly cooperate. Learn the skill set needed to meditate on your own even if you have a racing mind and little spare time.
Dropping into deep relaxation on a regular basis helps you to be calm in the face of overwhelm and urgency, can improve your health, and help you be more responsive and less reactive to challenges.

We’ll start with the basic principles of this approach. Then you will learn and practice some basic skills. This will be followed by a longer guided meditation where you can incorporate the basic skills. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions during the class.
A weekly Zoom drop-in class in instinctive meditation will run on Wednesdays from 10:00-11:00 am EST starting April 29 and running for 12 weeks.

the Spruce Pine location will also be able to preview artwork that will be featured in an upcoming
online auction to help raise funds lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep all visitors and staff
safe, visitors will be required to wear a face covering and sanitize their hands upon entering.
Toe River Arts has made great strides within the last few years to reassess programming and artistic
endeavors to ensure the organization is truly fulfilling its mission. The organization has wonderful
partners in both the town of Burnsville and Yancey County. Since 2006, Toe River Arts has occupied
office space and featured the work of local artists at 102 West Main Street in Burnsville. In July Toe
River Arts will turn the upper floor into artist studio spaces. Artists who are members of Toe River Arts
with studio space in the Burnsville location will have access to the gallery space, as well as unlimited
access to their studio space. Toe River Arts will feature artist demonstrations and continue to sell
artist’s work in the gift shop.

Join us for a live conversation with Marilyn Chase, author of the newly published biography of artist and BMC alumna Ruth Asawa Everything She Touched: The Life of Ruth Asawa.
Everything She Touched recounts the incredible life of American sculptor Ruth Asawa (1926–2013), a woman who wielded imagination and hope in the face of intolerance and who transformed everything she touched into art. This lively and compelling new book by journalist and author Marilyn Chase is the first biography of this major American artist.
Marilyn Chase is a journalist, author, and teacher. She spent over two decades at the Wall Street Journal, and her previous books include The Barbary Plague: The Black Death in Victorian San Francisco. As a continuing lecturer at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Chase now teaches reporting and writing to a new generation of journalists. She lives in San Francisco.

The popular FREE Art and Architecture Walking Tours offered by the Arts Council of Henderson County return for 2020. The 90-minute tour of the Historic West Side gathers at 6:00 pm in back of the Henderson County Library at 301 Washington Street. Tours are led by Doug Gelbert who has created over 400 architectural tours in towns across the United States and Canada. All tours are free of charge and no pre-registration is required. Just show up ready to walk. As always, dogs are welcome to accompany their well-behaved owners on the Art and Architectural Walking Tours.

Pisgah Legal Services Launches Campaign to Help Those Recently Unemployed Due to COVID-19 Find Health Insurance through Special Enrollment Process
Pisgah Legal Services (PLS), a nonprofit that provides free, civil legal aid in Western North Carolina, recently launched a targeted campaign to reach people recently unemployed due to COVID-19 who may have also lost their health insurance. Anyone who has experienced a qualifying life event in the past 60 days, including job loss, may qualify for Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance. Pisgah Legal Services offers free assistance and free information to help understand options for affordable health insurance. “The COVID-19 pandemic has left many people without jobs and with that, health insurance,” said Jim Barrett, Executive Director for Pisgah Legal Services. “Many of these people may qualify to file for health insurance through Special Enrollment and it’s our goal to help them understand their options.”
As recently as early May, NC had surpassed the one million mark for individual unemployment insurance benefit claims, as noted on the N.C. Division of Employment website. Almost one-quarter, or 20.3 percent of the 4.97 million North Carolinians listed in the state’s workforce as of mid-March have filed an unemployment insurance claim. “The need is great and will likely grow,” notes Barrett. “Pisgah Legal wants to make sure that no one misses health care coverage as a result of recent job loss.”
When qualifying for a special enrollment period, people do not have to wait until November for Open Enrollment; they can take advantage of options now. One Asheville resident, Christina, lost her job in March and with it, her insurance. She suffers from heart disease and without insurance, was unsure how she would afford her medicines. By working with Pisgah Legal Services, she was able to get a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan for less than $17/month. “Pisgah Legal took care of everything for me,” said Christina. She hopes others take advantage of this valuable, free service.
Pisgah Legal Services works with organizations in WNC to provide these services across the region. These organizations include: Blue Ridge Community Health Services, Council on Aging of Buncombe County, Legal Aid or North Carolina, Mountain Projects, Inc., and, Western Carolina Medical Society.

The Craft Futures Fund will fund up to $30,000 each month from May 2020 – October 2020 to support craft-based education projects. These one-time, unrestricted grants of $5,000 will be disbursed to craft-based education projects that envision and build new futures for craft.

In this camp we will be learning how to make several types of pots and will add details to give them their own personality! The focus will be on getting students comfortable using the wheel while having the creative freedom to turn their pots into fun characters along the way!

Toe River Arts will host BIG INK at its Spruce Pine gallery October 23-24, 2020
for a large-scale woodblock printmaking workshop. BIG INK, founded in 2012 by Lyell Castonguay
and Carand Burnet, and based in Newmarket, New Hampshire, provides opportunities for large-scale
woodblock printing workshops in host institutions. Big Ink’s mission is to inspire a greater public
appreciation of large-scale woodblock printmaking and to extend its practice as an artistic discipline.
Toe River Arts invites artists, high school students and recent high school graduates to apply to
participate in this workshop. Twelve artists and twelve students or recent high school graduates will
collaborate to carve woodblocks to be printed on BIG INK’s “The Big Tuna,” their large-scale,
traveling printing press. No previous knowledge of woodblock printing is necessary. The workshop
fee will be waived for students and supplies will be provided. Artists will be expected to pay a $100
workshop fee and pay supply costs, with Toe River Arts members receiving a discount.
The deadline to apply is July 1, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST. Chosen applicants will be notified July 22, at
which time they will be given material lists. Participants are encouraged to attend socially distanced
“Carving Nights.” Hosted by Toe River Arts and closed to the public, these meetings will give the
artists and students the opportunity and venue to work together on their carvings. Tentatively
scheduled for August, the exact dates and locations for these events will be determined based on the
appropriate social distancing requirements at that time.
While workshop participation is limited to 12 students and 12 artists, the printing process will be open
for the public to observe. If large gatherings are determined to be unsafe due to social distancing
requirements, a limit will be placed on how many people can observe in person, and/or arrangements
will be made for online viewing of the workshop.
This workshop will accompany Think BIG Prints, an exhibition of works by BIG INK artists, in the Toe
River Arts Spruce Pine Gallery’s upstairs ARC space September 11-October 24, 2020. A reception is
planned for October 9, 5-7 PM, but will be rescheduled or moved online if large gatherings are
deemed unsafe.
