The Moonshiners Reunion + Mountain Music Festival
Oct 7 all-day
Plum Hollow

Moonshiners Reunion

The Moonshiners Reunion & Mountain Music Festival is ALWAYS held the first full weekend in October!

(Thursday, Friday, and Saturday)

Dedicated to keeping the moonshining spirit alive, the Moonshiner’s Reunion is one of the Appalachian region’s most authentic annual folk music celebrations. The gates open at noon on Thursday. Check back here often for more details!

This event is the inspiration of musician Barney Barnwell, whose career path was as winding and steeped in local color as the Moonshiner’s trail leading to the copper pot corn whisky still. Listening to tales of the Moonshiners of the 30’s and 40’s, many of them relatives, Barney saluted these outlaws of yesteryear by writing and performing songs about their ways, myths, and unique contributions. Barnwell was also instrumental in getting South Carolina Educational Television to film a documentary on moonshining in the foothills, featuring none other than the Barnwell Clan. We are dedicated to keeping his memory, his music and his tales alive with this festival, so join us for a weekend you will never forget!

Plum Hollow Farm (also known as Woodstick), which lies near South Carolina’s “Dark Corners”, one of America’s moonshining hot spots, provides a unique and beautiful setting for the festival. A covered bandstand and gentle hillside sets the stage for laying on a quilt and getting comfortable when the music begins. Bring your lawn chair, your tent, your RV. Just remember no glass of any kind is allowed!

Want to know how to get to Plum Hollow? Click Here For Directions.

Camping

The surrounding woods are always popular for camping, whether it be an RV or a tepee, and everyone is encouraged to bring their instruments so they can join in the “all night pickin’” as in years past. Although we don’t have hook-ups we do have a shower house and camping is included in the price of the ticket. Absolutely NO pets of any kind, glass containers, 4/wheelers, modified golf carts, drones or fireworks allowed. Campsites are first come, first serve, except for Sponsors and Bands and some select spots at the “Top of the Hill”. If you are interested in a reserved campsite these must be paid in advance. Please call (864) 357-0222 or (864) 585-0780 for more information or to reserve your spot today! No one will be allowed into the festival until the gates open at noon on Thursday (except sponsors, bands or press).

No one will be allowed into the festival until the gates open at noon on Thursday, except sponsors and bands.

We also have rustic cabins for rent. Festival sponsors or bands have first choice but after that it’s a first come first serve basis. Some cabins will sleep 6 to a room, while other cabin suites include hand carved double beds and only sleep 2. Whether you are looking for privacy with a cabin suite or want to spend the weekend with a group in the regular cabins, each one rents for $100.00 per night and must be rented for all 3 nights. Please call (864) 357-0222 for availability. Also, see our media gallery for photos of the cabins.

Golf Carts

If anyone is interested in renting a golf cart for the Moonshiners Reunion, please contact Brittany at Golf Cart Services. Although we are not affiliated with them, they’re our official vendor of golf carts. PLEASE make sure you rent a cart with working lights. We do not allow golf carts to be used at night without working lights. Please call (864) 574-4616. Ext. 209

Vendors

The only vendors accepted at the Moonshiners Reunion are exhibitors/vendors of true Southern Heritage articles, such as broom making, wood carving, soap making, pottery, etc. These Folk artisans are strongly encouraged to bring their wares, and may set up and sell for $150.00 & the price of a gate ticket. Also must set up arrangements at least one week in advance. There are no electrical hookups for vendors so you must be self-contained. Vendors are allowed to set-up in the concert area if you wish, but you must be set-up before Thursday evening and plan on staying all weekend. No vehicles are allowed in or out of the concert area after the festival begins. If you are needing more details please feel free to call us at (864) 357-0222.

Tickets

Ticket price is per person and includes camping, parking and all concerts. Ticket prices are for all ages. Tickets may be purchased at the gate. Sponsors & Bands are welcome to come early any time the week of event. Just call in advance to let us know so we can arrange for someone to help you.

** NOTE: we do not manufacture, distribute or sell any alcohol (moonshine) at our venue

Once Again, we thank everyone who participates in making this such a memorable event. Where else can you enjoy moonshining folklore and great music while surrounded by great friends and the Blue Ridge Mountains!

From spectacular circus-inspired performances to stirring, emotionally-charged songs, “Pippin” unfolds as an exploration of the highs and lows of glory, love, and ambition. John Devlin and Christylez Bacon: Music for Our Moment
Oct 8 @ 3:00 pm
Peace Concert Hall

John Devlin, conductor
Christylez Bacon, beatbox and rap
Caroline Shaw: Entr’acte
Evan Meier/Christylez Bacon: Migrations in Rhythm: A Concerto for Beatbox and Rhyme
Dmitry Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5

Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte is a Haydn-inspired strings-rich piece that will pull you in. It’s what critic James Bennett called “juicy and ebullient…culminating with a succession of full-bellied chords that I may one day make my ringtone.”

Washington DC native and Duke Ellington School for the Arts alum beatboxer Christylez Bacon has created something totally new with this intersection of symphonic and hip hop tradition. You may have seen this Grammy nominee onstage with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center.  He says, “The music is the lure and the lyric is the education that will destroy the many barriers that prevent us from recognizing our connections with each other.”

Soviet composer Dmitry Shostakovich premiered his fifth symphony in 1937 to overwhelming acclaim, with the audience standing to applaud for more than 40 minutes. This darkly dramatic work is the best one to start with if you’re experiencing Shosty (as musicians have nick-named him) for the first time. A simple internet search will reveal more details of the political turmoil surrounding Shostakovich’s previous compositions and the safety he reclaimed after writing this symphony, so do yourself a favor and dig in to what it was like to be an artist in 1930s Leningrad.

TINA MCGUIRE THEATER

Kyshona has always lent her voice and music to those that feel they have been silenced or forgotten. She began her career as a music therapist, writing her first songs with her patients–the students and inmates under her care. She soon found the need to write independently and find her own voice, and endeavor which led her to the fertile ground of the Nashville creative community and songwriting culture. Since then, she has learned how to balance her music career with her passion to heal the hurting. Audiences will find a common thread of empowerment, overcoming adversity, and finding hope in her work.

After her powerful performances, concertgoers often ask, “What can I do?” Her response? “Listen.”

“…wherever she plants her feet, she does so with righteous conviction and a strong sense of her own
voice.” – NPR Music

“Listen highlights Kyshona’s descriptive songwriting and soulful vocals alongside a versatile blend of
folk, rock and R&B influences.” – Billboard

“One of the most compassionate and uplifting young voices in Nashville today.” – Ann Powers/ NPR Music’s World Cafe

Discovering connections is part of the fun:  Pink Floyd’s “On The Run” seamlessly fitting in the middle of the composition of Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself”.  Perfectly placing Phish’s “Sand” into the groove of The Talking Head’s “Slippery People”.  Segued collections from all three acts such as Run Like Hell > Making Flippy Floppy > Piper > Run Like Hell or Mike’s Song > Have A Cigar > Once In A Lifetime > Weekapaug Groove.  These ideas are the spirit behind Pink Talking Fish.

The story is ever evolving.  The experience is always exciting.  Come join Pink Talking Fish for the ultimate fusion tribute and celebrate the love of this music in unique fashion.

Twain with special guest Natalie Jane Hill

TWAIN:

For the past decade or so, Mt. Davidson has cultivated his songs and sounds, attempting to create a bridge, a meeting place, between the terrestrial and the mystic.  He is a ponderous and delicate sort of creature, short and vaguely leonine, who has spent most of his young life abiding in the midlands of transcendence.

Following its quiet self-release in 2014, his fifth and most recent LP, Life Labors in the Choir, has steadily gained devoted listeners throughout the globe and continues to blossom today. The album describes a marked evolution in an alluring yet strange and hesitant discography. Progressing from the bashfully childlike sounds of 2005’s Madeline, (now lost), through self-constructed garage multi-track tangles of Sleeping Tree (2007) and Almanack (2008), we hear the progress of a young man struggling to free himself from the shackles of depression and neurosis. In 2010’s Love is All Around, a distinct breakthrough can be felt in the form of a question that challenges the foundation of the doubt and fear running through the early music. This sudden evolution is in no small part owing to the addition of two musicians – Peter Pezzimenti (drums and vibes) and Ken Woodward (basses) – and a sound engineer – Adrian Olsen. The music really began to breathe.

“Free’d from doubt, my cigarette went out,
the sun came out and warmed up the house,
oh to be fainting into that painting,
as I wrap up the tune and bring it to you”

This fall, Twain will release a new record of songs – Rare Feeling – on Keeled Scales Records (Austin, TX). These recordings have been gently fermenting for an extended period of time, and are now ready for consumption. The foundation of the record was captured in a tool shed by the great magi-bard, S. McMicken (Dr. Dog), using ancient and secret methods of time distortion. The resultant reels were then brought to Richmond VA, where master engineer and sound-seeker Adrian Olsen guided the songs into completion. As with the previous LP, the band has labored to present a purely AAA analog disc, and is eager for you to experience the special magnetic warmth that results from the process.  (We once again are indebted to the mysterious and mighty Paul Gold of Salt Mastering for his kind attention).

NATALIE JANE HILL:

‘Solely,’ the sophomore effort by folk guitarist/singer-songwriter Natalie Jane Hill, is a record of transition. While the Central Texas native’s stunning debut “Azalea” grew from years spent developing a textural narrative voice and idiosyncratic guitar style in the vibrant Blue Ridge Mountains, “Solely” represents a period of inward growth, and an outward push into an expanded sonic palette.

Following a move back to the Austin area in the fall of 2019, just months ahead of the pandemic, Natalie began an intensive period of
reflection, and expanded her song-craft’s foundations from the broader themes of nature into the vulnerable intricacies of self-discovery. Along with this process came an openness to external creative input.

Recorded between October 2020-March 2021 to Tascam 8 track in the Lockhart Texas home of producer Jason Chronis (Voxtrot, Tele Novella), these recordings represent Hill’s first incorporation of other musicians into her arrangements, featuring performances by Mat Davidson (Twain) among several other trusted friends. There is a liberating and careful grace in these collaborations, providing strength andcolor to the upper branches of each song while preserving space for the health of the roots.

‘Solely’ is a celebration of knowing ourselves well enough to be able to accept the darkest paths of introspection, which can allow us to combine our creative influence with others to construct the experiences we want to have. Like lived experience itself, this music breathes and inhabits the space you allow for it, constantly revealing new qualities and inviting repeated reflection.

Black Violin
Oct 12 @ 7:00 pm
Wortham Center for the Performing Arts

Prepare to be mesmerized as classical music and hip-hop collide. For more than two decades, this charismatic, two-time Grammy-nominated duo has reconceptualized how a violin concert looks and sounds, boldly merging string arrangements with modern beats and vocals to create a world where Mozart, Marvin Gaye and Kendrick Lamar harmoniously coexist on one stage.

Joining Black Violin on the road this fall is Son Little.

Praised by American Songwriter as “one of the best songwriters working today,” Son Little conceived his latest album, Like Neptune, in a cabin overlooking the Delaware River in upstate New York. Trading in the existential dread permeating his previous work for unbridled joy and self-acceptance, Son Little transmutes the chronic pain of self-doubt into a beautiful and freeing opus about overcoming generational trauma. Hailed by Afropunk as “a stunning statement of purpose,” Like Neptune decorates the altar of the primordial blues and elevates the labor of healing to high art. “I’ve always felt as though I was making music because I had to, something inside compelled me. Fueled me,” Little shared. “This the first time in a long time I’m making music for the pure joy of creating.”

Son Little and his band — Little on vocals/guitar, Steve McKie on drums, and DeShawn Alexander on keys/bass — will tour North America for the first time in support of Like Neptune through November and December.
