ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak) Film Screening and Q+A with Filmmakers

Join Buncombe County Special Collections and Blurry Pictures for a screening of the new award-winning documentary, ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ / We Will Speak.

With only 1500 fluent speakers left, this film follows a small group of activists racing to save the Cherokee language from extinction.

A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow.

The screening will be held in the Lord Auditorium at Pack Memorial Library beginning at 5:30 pm Wednesday January 24, 2024.

History Hour: Nature’s Wisdom thru Native Eyes

Join us at 6:30pm for this free hybrid event. When storytelling, native wisdom and nature’s intelligence converge, something beautiful can arise. That’s the theme of the new film Nature’s Wisdom Thru Native Eyes by award-winning documentary filmmaker David Weintraub and the Center for Cultural Preservation. Weintraub will be joined by Cherokee elders Davy Arch and Mary Thompson for a screening Thursday, January 25 co-sponsored by Asheville Museum of History and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNCA. There will be time for audience questions at the conclusion of the film.

Music Movie Mondays Series: THE LAST WALTZ

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Widely hailed as the greatest concert film
ever made, the 1978 Martin Scorsese-directed film The Last Waltz is a
landmark in history. Documenting the farewell concert of The Band, The
Last Waltz boasts a who’s who list of musical co-stars A special February
12 creening as part of the Music Movie Mondays series at Grail Movie
House will be hosted by Asheville author and music journalist Bill Kopp.
The Canadian-American group known as The Band were among the most
important acts of their time. Getting their big break as the backing group for
Bob Dylan, The Band would pioneer in the creation of the style of music now
known as Americana. But their music has always transcended genres. Their
vivid lyrical imagery, passionate vocals and sympathetic instrumental work
created a raft of classics.
But the group was always fraught with internal tensions, and by 1976 – just eight years after releasing their
groundbreaking debut Music From Big Pink – they decided to call it a day. But The Band went out in style, mounting a
concert event that included an all-star lineup of special guests. Though it wasn’t promoted at the time as a farewell
concert, The Last Waltz (as it came to be known) signaled the end of the group. But that concert extravaganza featured the
band at its peak, along with performances by a staggering lineup: Ronnie Hawkins, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ringo
Starr, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Dr. John the Night Tripper, Eric Clapton,
the Staple Singers and more, individually and collectively serving up a cross-section of American musical forms.
The whole ten-hour affair was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and a team of cameramen. When the finished movie
was released to theaters nearly 18 months later, it was a box office success. The Last Waltz quickly gained status as one of
the greatest concert films ever made, a reputation it maintains to this day. A contemporary digital restoration – sharpening
sound and imagery – has only improved it.
As part of the Music Movie Mondays series, Grail Moviehouse in Asheville hosts a special one-night-only showing of the
film. Presented by Asheville-based speaker, author and music journalist Bill Kopp, the evening will include a screening of
the film followed by an interactive discussion.

“Going to the movies has always been a kind of communal
experience,” says Kopp, host of Music Movie Mondays.
“Especially in this post-lockdown era, the opportunity to not
only watch a film but then to discuss it with others is
something even more special. And music-related films lend

themselves remarkably well to this shared, interactive experience.”
Music Movie Mondays is a monthly series moderated by Bill Kopp, hosted by Grail Movie
House and sponsored by AshevilleFM. Music Movie Mondays presents a special screening of The Last Waltz on Monday,
Feb. 12 @ 7 pm. The program will feature a brief introduction. Then we’ll watch the film together; afterward, we’ll
engage in a moderated discussion.
The one-night-only screening of The Last Waltz is the latest in the ongoing popular series of Music Movie Mondays at
Grail Moviehouse. Every month, we’ll watch and discuss new releases, classics and cult favorites.

The 37th National Arts and Crafts Conference + Shows

There are a number of ways to participate in our annual Arts and Crafts celebration at the Grove Park Inn in February:

1. Reserve an Arts and Crafts Weekend Package at the Grove Park Inn

The cost of registration is included in the Grove Park Inn package so you won’t need to worry about purchasing an additional conference events pass with the office if you’ve got the package.

The package includes the following:

  • Lodging Friday and Saturday nights at the Omni Grove Park Inn*;
  • The Conference Events Pass which covers all of the seminars, discussion groups, demonstrations, Grove Park Inn tours, and special exhibits for all three days;
  • Entry to all three exhibitor shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday;
  • Continental breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings;
  • Dessert and coffee social hour Friday and Saturday nights;
  • Use of the Grove Park Inn Sports Center;
  • Conference tote bag, a calendar, and The Conference Catalog.

2. Purchase individual Conference Events Passes only

If you’d like to register for the conference and attend the shows, but you won’t be staying at the Grove Park Inn, then you will need to purchase Conference Events Passes from our office. The Conference Events Pass includes admission to the Exhibitor Shows. You can call the office at (828) 628-1915.

The Conference Events Pass will get your entry into all seminars, small group discussions, shows demonstrations, access to the educational exhibits, and free access to the Arts and Crafts Shows. You will also receive two continental breakfasts during the weekend and the pre-seminar dessert socials. 

3. Buy general admission the day of if you’re just interested in viewing the Arts & Crafts Shows

If you just want to shop the dealer shows at the Grove Park Inn, you can purchase general admission at the door the day that you want to come to the shows! Included in the shows are access to the educational displays, two demonstrations, the silent auction, and the chance to enter a special drawing!

General admission is $10.00 and covers admittance for all three days.

Here’s what’s included in the shows:

– Discover vintage antiques as well as handcrafted contemporary items in the Arts & Crafts style including new and antique jewelry, rugs, furniture, pottery and tiles, artwork, furniture, and metalware, showcasing hand craftsmanship and simple yet elegant designs.

– View our three educational displays within the shows.

– Demonstrations on the Wooden (electric) Lamps of Charles Limbert AND the Cuerda-Seca method of ceramic motifs in Art Pottery;

– Access to our annual silent auction – bid on gently used items from collections from across the country;

– Authors will be on hand to sign their books in the 8th floor of the Vanderbilt wing;

– and a Free drawing to win a special collector’s item (to be shown at the shows).

4. You can separately register for special fundraiser events happening throughout the weekend – the Pre-Conference Workshops, the Craftsman Reception, the Historic House Tours, and the Asheville Art Museum lecture without registering for the conference!

The Friends of the South Buncombe Library are pleased to announce their first live, in-person book sale of 2024!  We will have thousands of fiction AND non-fiction books, not to mention DVDS, CDs, and puzzles at bargain prices, in every genre and for every age group.

Prices are a steal at $2.00 for adult hardcovers and paperbacks for just $1.00.  Children’s items are only $1.00 & 50¢!  And all movies and music are $1.00.

Proceeds benefit your library in so many ways: purchasing library supplies and equipment, newspapers, and large print books; providing children’s programs; and improving the grounds.

Sale Hours: 10am-4pm Friday and Saturday, with 10am-12pm on Friday reserved for Friends of the Library members.  Not a member?  We’re happy to sign you up at the door; the minimum donation is just $10.00.

Melvin Udall (played by Jack Nicholson) is a misanthropic and obsessive-compulsive novelist living in New York City. Carol Connelly (played by Helen Hunt) is a single mother and waitress who becomes one of Melvin’s regulars at the local diner. Simon Bishop (played by Greg Kinnear) is Melvin’s gay neighbor and an artist who becomes the victim of a violent assault.

When Simon is injured and left unable to care for his dog, Melvin is reluctantly drawn into helping him. This unexpected act of kindness sets off a chain of events that gradually transforms all three of their lives.
