Introduction to Flatfooting
Mar 11 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Community/Education Room in Black Mountain Public Library

Flatfooting is a low, close-to-the floor style of dance that focuses on making rhythms that go along with the music, usually an old-time dance tune. It’s really all about the sound, and most flatfooters don’t do anything fancy with their arms. Participants will learn how to do basic flatfoot moves in this workshop while learning the history of one of Appalachia’s deepest rooted dance forms and hearing personal anecdotes about other traditional Appalachian dancers that Rodney has had the pleasure of encountering throughout his journey.

About Rodney Sutton: Rodney Clay Sutton is a dance performer and teacher of Appalachian step dance – both flatfoot and clogging. He calls square dances and contra dances, and is a storyteller and ballad singer. Rodney offers workshops, lectures, and demonstrations catered for a range of age groups, including youth, seniors, and corporate gatherings. He is also a concert and festival producer, emcee, and stage manager. In 2019, Rodney was one of 9 folks selected to receive a first ever Folk & Traditional Arts Master Artist Fellowship from South Arts. He was able to use the monies to go to Ireland for a month in September of 2019 to study Sean Nos` dance – the Irish step-dance equivalent to flat-footing.

ALONZO KING LINES BALLET
Mar 18 @ 7:30 pm
Peace Concert Hall

Alonzo King LINES Ballet is a celebrated contemporary ballet company that has been guided since 1982 by the artistic vision of acclaimed choreographer Alonzo King. Collaborating with noted composers, musicians, writers, and visual artists from around the world, King draws on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions, imbuing classical ballet with new expressive potential. He has been heralded as a visionary and thought leader on topics that reach far beyond dance, receiving numerous accolades such as a 2020 Dance Magazine Award. The company brings new works of illuminating beauty to Bay Area audiences in bi-annual home seasons. LINES Ballet’s national and international tours allow the company to share its vision of transformative, revelatory dance through performances worldwide.

LINES Ballet is dedicated to training the next generation of artists through its pre-professional Summer Program, Training Program, and Bachelor of Fine Arts Program with Dominican University of California. LINES also makes dance accessible to Bay Area adults and youth through world-class, affordable classes open to the community and free in-school education programs.

After San Francisco’s stay-at-home order began in March 2020, all of LINES Ballet’s programs transitioned into the online space. The company also produced a new film series, There Is No Standing Still, which The New York Times and The Guardian included in their respective “Best Dance of 2020” lists. The organization has now adopted a hybrid model for its classes, events, and programming and recently completed a successful, five-week international tour.

“The term LINES alludes to all that is visible in the phenomenal world. There is nothing that is made or formed without line. Lines are in our fingerprints, the shapes of our bodies, constellations, geometry. It implies genealogical connection, progeny and spoken word. It addresses direction, communication, and design. A line of thought. A boundary or eternity. A melodic line. From vibration or dot to dot it is the visible organization of what we see.”        Alonzo King

The Beauty of
Divine Beings Dancing

The gong resounds, the curtain opens, and a heavenly scene is right before your eyes. Fairies emerge from a sea of billowing clouds. Mongolians ride on horseback across grasslands as vast as the sky. Classic stories of love and loss, of humor and heroic deeds, come to life. You will be amazed by how vibrant, exciting, and profound classical Chinese culture can be.

Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

Celebrating 40 Years!

Beale and Peggy Fletcher began this wonderful event in order to showcase the very talented dance students of the Tri-State area. The contests of the past created performance opportunities for dancers to be critiqued in a positive forum for their efforts.  The Fletcher’s grew the Tri-State Dance Contest into an event everyone looked forward to year after year and is still know for it’s traditional values.

Special Awards are given each year in honor and rememberance of the Fletchers.

Auditions for Twelfth Night
Apr 3 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Montford Park Players
The Montford Park Players is committed to gender-neutral and race-conscious casting. ALL are welcome and invited to participate! Community theatre is at its best when it fully embraces and engages its FULL community, not just one portion.
BIPOC actors, we need you.
LGBTQIA+ actors, we need you.
Actors with disabilities, we need you.
Actors of all ages, we need you.
Twelfth Night will be performed Fridays through Sundays, June 23rd-July 21st at 7:30 pm. Rehearsals will begin in mid-April and continue until opening.
Actors will be given sides to read at the audition. (available here: https://www.montfordparkplayers.org/abou…/volunteers-page/)
A large cast is needed and the breakdown is as follows:
All characters are open to actors of any race, ability, gender, or age unless otherwise noted. Genders and sexualities of characters will be molded to fit the actors who best suit the role, with consideration of the other actors on stage.
All characters will be asked to sing and dance (nothing hard or complex, its pirate shanties y’all) and play instruments if they are able.
VIOLA (woman, cis or trans) is tossed ashore in a strange land and presents as a cabin boy for safety. She quickly falls in love with Captain Orsino.
CAPTAIN ORSINO is a powerful and noble pirate lord and true ruler of Illyria, despite it technically being the king’s land. He is lovesick for Captain Olivia.
CAPTAIN OLIVIA runs the local inn in the wake of losing her father and brother. She is rich, fearsome, and good with a sword.
SEBASTIAN/SEBASTIENNE (gender depending on casting) is Viola’s twin, and baffled by how many people in Illyria think they know him already.
MALVOLIO is the straitlaced and haughty first mate of Captain Olivia. He pines for her but looks down on her crew.
FESTE is a traveling bard, jester, and clown making his living in Illyria. They enjoys playing tricks on the straitlaced and haughty. They miss their banished lover.
THE BANDMATES are a few lost souls who follow Feste and accompany their antics. Must play Instruments. Don’t have to speak. Can play various small roles.
TOBY BELCH is Captain Olivia’s drunkle uncle. He plots for a marriage for Olivia and is a walking bisexual dumpster fire.
MARIA, part of Captain Olivia’s crew, has a sharp wit and a trickster spirit. She is pining for Toby.
ANDREW AGUECHEEK is a “special friend” of Toby Belch. He tries to woo Olivia at Toby’s request because he lacks the capacity for original thought.
ANTONIO was banished from Illyria due to the king’s antiquated laws on love, but following Sebastian, he returns to the land of his lost lover.
VALENTINE is a member of Captain Orsino’s crew. Also plays GUARD.
CURIO is a member of Captain Orsino’s crew. Also plays GUARD and SAILOR.
Anyone who is interested in a technical role only (stage management, lights, sound, etc.) should send an email to [email protected] and include your background, if any. We welcome all volunteers!

DANCE THEATRE OF GREENVILLE: CONTINUUM
Apr 7 @ 7:30 pm
Peace Center

Symbolized by the infinity sign, CONTINUUM discovers time as an endless sequence – ebbing and flowing through monotony, everyday moments, and significant life occurrences. We discover time as linear, sequenced events and yet time is circular, ever gliding through each curve without a beginning or end.

Dance Theatre of Greenville’s Performance Company presents: CONTINUUM. This new original show features works by Artistic Director Cindy Nunweiler, Katie Faulkenberry, Peyton Lemen, Olivia Gould and Katie Poteet, as well as guest artists Tabatha Robinson- Scott, Paige Maxwell Winget, Kristin Wagner, and student choreographer Corinne Hoeft.

It’s all about time….
