Join PARI on Friday, January 7, 2022 as we celebrate the largest planet in our solar system! 412 years ago this week Galileo Galilei spotted the four brightest moons of Jupiter and in honor of that monumental discovery we are sharing our best telescopes and Internationally certified dark sky park to observe this planet, the moon and other fantastic objects you can only see with a telescope! Grab your coats, hot coffee or hot chocolate, friends and family then come to PARI for an unforgettable winter night.

PARI is typically cooler than surrounding areas so make sure you dress appropriately for outdoor viewing.

Join us every Tuesday night for Trivia!

Trivia will run from 7-8:15 pm. We will be capping the teams at 20 and teams will not be able to join after 7 so make sure to arrive early to secure your spot!

The Blue Ridge Humane Society Thrift Store is hosting a tribute birthday party in honor of Betty White on Friday, January 14, 9:30am-4:30pm. The event will celebrate Betty White’s advocacy for animal welfare in addition to her humor shared over the years. The festivities will include cake and trivia starting at 11am, along with Betty White’s favorite snacks available for shoppers. A special 60% off sale on pet items will celebrate White’s love for animals. Shoppers can also donate for the “Betty White Challenge,” a call to donate $5 to local animal organizations in Betty White’s honor on what would have been her 100^th birthday on January 17. Donations can be accepted in the store or online at https://www.blueridgehumane.org/donate/. All proceeds directly support Blue Ridge Humane Society’s work to rescue animals and provide animal support services for pets in need.

Blue Ridge Humane Society, Inc., is a 501(c)3 animal welfare organization started in 1950 dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities. BRHS cares for pets awaiting adoption and in foster homes; offers low-cost vaccine clinics, animal education programs, pet training classes, and youth education and projects; coordinates community pet food assistance, emergency vet assistance, and the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP), which is a collaboration with Henderson County, the City of Hendersonville, and the Henderson County Animal Services Center.

Come celebrate the wonderful life of Betty White with us and Mountain Pet Rescue on January 17th on what would have been her 100th birthday!

As many of you know, Betty White LOVED animals and was an avid supporter of animal rights groups, humane societies, shelters, and more.

To commemorate the love Betty had for animals and to show our love for the one and only Betty, we have teamed up with Mountain Pet Rescue for a Betty White celebration of life.

Mountain Pet Rescue will bring adoptable animals to Down Dog, along with some of their merch!

We encourage humans and animals to dress up like Betty (if you’d like)! Best Betty costume will win a $25 Down Dog gift card and a Mountain Pet Shirt.

Are you looking to take your training up a notch with your best fur-end? Ruff Life Dog Training Services will be holding a 1-hour training seminar at Down Dog once a month to help you meet your general obedience training goals.

Training topics include leash walking, coming when called, no jumping, etc. We will also discuss training equipment and how to best set your dog up for success.

Our first seminar will be on Sunday, January 23rd from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm.

This seminar will be FREE for annual dog bar members of Down Dog and $12 for monthly members and non-members.

 Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College (A-B Tech) is a comprehensive two-year college and one of 58 colleges in the North Carolina Community College System, serving students in five locations in Buncombe and Madison Counties.  A-B Tech, through its dedication to student success, strives toward its mission to deliver quality education to enhance academic, workforce, and personal development. A-B Tech envisions changing lives and strengthening communities. 

We are currently seeking registered Therapy Dog Teams to have regular routes on campus, visiting public areas, classrooms and staff offices. Our A-B Tech Therapy Dog program aims to spread compassion, empathy, and, most importantly, “pawsitivity” across our campus.  A-B Tech Community College recognizes the positive influence that therapy dogs can have on student and staff.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• Therapy dog teams (owner and dog) will visit public areas on campus, classrooms, and staff offices
• Therapy dog teams will also assist with special requests such as visiting classrooms before exams, counseling sessions or special events on campus.

Time Commitment:

• 1 hour once a week
• Therapy Dog teams are scheduled to ensure they are not in the same building or area at the same time as other teams.

Requirements:

• Must be 21 years old
• Complete volunteer application with A-B Tech
• Complete FERPA & HIPAA forms
• Submit to a criminal background screening
• Attend an in-person interview and orientation with A-B Tech Campus Volunteer Coordinator
• Provide copies of Therapy Dog Certification (Dog Teams must be certified by an accredited Therapy Dog Agency before starting).

*As of 2021, the Volunteer Program accepts Therapy Dog certification from the following agencies, Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Therapy Dogs International, Pet Partners (previously Delta Society).

Health & Safety:

• A-B Tech is following all CDC guidelines for higher educational institutions

Blue Ridge Humane will be at the Interfaith Assistance Ministry Drive Thru Tuesday on the 4th Tuesday of the month, 3pm-5:30pm with free pet food.
