“Wilmington on Fire” is a new feature-length documentary that chronicles The Wilmington Massacre of 1898. The Wilmington Massacre of 1898 was a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10, 1898 in the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. It is considered one of the only successful examples of a violent overthrow of an existing government and left countless numbers of African-Americans dead and exiled from the city. This event was the spring board for the White Supremacy movement and Jim Crow segregation throughout the state of North Carolina and the American South. This incident has been barely mentioned and has been omitted from most history books. It was not until 2006, after the North Carolina General Assembly published a report on it, that the tragedy became known to the general public.

An acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium. Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters is a close-up portrait of the acclaimed photographer, filmed with unprecedented access over a decade as he creates his stunning images. For this program, director Ben Shapiro discusses his interest in Crewdson, the process of making the film, and answers questions from the audience. Presented in conjunction with Vantage Points: Contemporary Photography from the Whitney Museum of American Art, in partnership with the Grail Moviehouse. UNC Asheville will present The 3 Pigs and the Red Line on April 16 at 7 p.m. and April 18 at 2 p.m. The 3 Pigs and the Red Line is a family-friendly adaptation of the classic fable, The 3 Pigs, inspired by the history of redlining and urban renewal in Asheville’s black community. Told through the magic of Toy Theatre, combining shadow puppetry, paper puppetry and crankies, the show aims to spark a conversation around our city’s complicated history and how it continues to affect us all today.

Racism is a Public Health Crisis
This year, our Stand Against Racism Campaign centers around the theme of Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis.
Public health is, and always has been, central to racial justice work. This year our theme is especially pertinent as our nation continues to face the intersecting public health crises of COVID-19 and racism.
Join us from April 22 – 25, 2021, as we hold virtual events, share information, advocate, and more with a common goal in mind. Understanding the economic and social determinants of health and how racism impacts public health outcomes. We see this critical work as necessary to uprooting systemic inequity in communities of color.
Saturday, April 24th: Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” chronicles how our justice system has been driven by racism from the days of slavery to today’s era of mass incarceration. The film is named for the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery with the exception of punishment for crime. Today, the United States accounts for 5 percent of the world’s population, but 25 percent of its prisoners. In 2020, more than 2 million people were incarcerated in the United States—of those, 40 percent were Black even though they only make up 13% of the population. On this Saturday during Stand Against Racism, we challenge you to watch the film and then to take some time to reflect on your learning by utilizing this discussion guide.

Proceeds from cards sold that day are donated directly to Blue Ridge Humane Society (BRHS) to provide funding for BRHS programs. Cards for HVL Causes are unique and thoughtful handmade greeting cards covering a wide range of occasions from Holidays, Thank You, Love and Friendship, Thinking of You, Birthday, Sympathy, and more. In addition, the limited edition BRHS Mother’s Day card will be available for purchase to honor the mothers and the people who show mom-like love.
Cards for HVL Causes was founded by Kathy Wrobel in 2019, and is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization that creates handmade cards for resale that benefit select area non-profits. Kathy shares: “When I began thinking about retirement, I knew I wanted to use my card-making expertise and materials to give back in thanksgiving for all my life’s blessings.” Cards for HVL Causes was created with the model of continuous circle of giving, encompassing volunteers, non-profits, customers, card recipients, and donors.
The Blue Ridge Humane Society, Inc., is a 501(c)3 animal welfare organization started in 1950 dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for animals in Henderson County and our neighboring communities. BRHS cares for pets awaiting adoption and in foster homes; offers low-cost vaccine clinics, animal education programs, pet training classes, and youth education and projects; coordinates community pet food assistance, emergency vet assistance, and the Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP), which is a collaboration with Henderson County, the City of Hendersonville, and the Henderson County Animal Services Center.
