Local Live! With Jay Brown, featuring Angie Heimann and JQ Vay
Sep 3 @ 7:00 pm – 9:15 pm
White Horse Black Mountain

Local Live returns to Whitehorse with another evening filled with world class local original music. Host Jay Brown welcomes the one and only Angie Heimann, along with the soulful stylings of Carolina man JQ Vay

Angie Heimann, front woman of the Mendocino County, CA born band the Blushin’ Roulettes, and more recent member of the newly formed North Carolina band The Appalucians, pens earthy, old-time tunes with a modern twist. “Her songs are stripped down, sexy little jewel boxes stuffed with ancient mountain magic,” says the San Francisco Free Folk Festival. Angie belts her stirring songs of damsels in their bliss and distress in a clarion vibrato often likened to Iris Dement.

Canton Labor Day Festival
Sep 3 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Canton’s Labor Day festival began in 1906 as a celebration of the Western North Carolina worker whose grit and fierce determination led to the construction of the Champion Fibre Company paper mill that would persevere through a great depression, two world wars, and two buy outs. Today, Canton’s mill is going strong. It is one of longest-operating mills in the United States and is uniquley positioned adjacent to a downtown. Like the mill, the Canton Labor Day Festival has not missed a beat. In 2018 the mill workers and wider community will celebrate the 113th festival, continuing Canton’s bragging rights of hosting the longest running Labor Day festival in the south.
Come to downtown Canton on September 2nd-3rd and experience a living, breathing manufacturing town with unmatched authenticity and pride. Celebrate Canton’s unique manufacturing legacy and all things made in Western North Carolina.

Through weavings, installations, sculpture, and print, artists Rena Detrixhe and Tali Weinberg (Tulsa, OK) explore the complex relationship between humans and the planet, offering insights, expressing grief, and creating space for resilience and change.

In Time of Seismic Sorrows is curated by Marilyn Zapf and organized by the Center for Craft. The Center for Craft is supported in part by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Farm-to-Table Dinner on the Quad with Michael Twitty
Sep 4 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
UNC Asheville

Don’t miss the Farm-to-Table Dinner on the Quad at UNC Asheville, our annual harvest feast! Gathered around the table in the heart of our beautiful campus, we honor and celebrate the land that sustains us, the gardens and businesses that feed us, and our collective efforts to insure that our wider community is engaged and nourished.

The 2018 Dinner will be guest hosted by Michael Twitty. Michael Twitty is a culinary historian, living history interpreter, and Judaics teacher from the Washington D.C. area. He is the creator of Afroculinaria, the first blog devoted to African American historic foodways and their legacy. Twitty’s 2017 book, The Cooking Gene, was recently honored with TWO James Beard Foundation awards for writing and for book of the year.

Our theme for the 2018 dinner will be ONE SOUTHERN FAMILY.”I dare to believe that all Southerners are a family. We are not merely Native, European, and African. We are Middle Eastern and South Asian and East Asian and Latin American, now. We are a dysfunctional family, but we are a family. We are unwitting inheritors of a story with many sins that bears the fruit of the possibility of ten times the redemption. One way is through reconnection with the culinary culture of the enslaved, our common ancestors, and restoring their names on the roots of the Southern tree and the table those roots support.” – Michael Twitty, The Cooking Gene

Tickets are on sale now. Visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/4th-annual-farm-to-table-dinner-on-the-quad-tickets-48162915577 to purchase yours today. Kids 12 and under eat free!

Jacqui Castle launches The Seclusion
Sep 4 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

While on a routine assignment scouting the viability of dwindling natural resources outside the massive urban centers most American citizens call home, Patricia ‘Patch’ and her co-worker Rexx discover a relic from the past containing dangerous contraband–unedited books from before The Seclusion. These texts will spark an unquenchable thirst for the truth that sees Patch’s father arrested by the totalitarian Board.
Evading her own arrest, Patch and Rexx set out across a ruined future United States, seeking some way to escape the only home they’ve ever known. Along the way, they learn about how their country came to be this way and fall in love. But their newfound knowledge may lead to their own demise.

Jacqui Castle is a freelance journalist based out of Asheville, North Carolina, who brings over nine years of experience producing high-quality copy to the table. She has been published in a variety of publications, both regional and national, and is a regular contributor to the Mountain Xpress. Fueled by tea, politics, and a captivating story-line.

This book can be pre- ordered in our store, by phone, or online by visiting https://www.malaprops.com/book/9781947848511
We ask that you purchase the books you want to be signed at our events from Malaprop’s. When you do this you are not only supporting the work it takes to run an events program, you are also telling the publishers that they should keep sending authors here. Can’t make it to the store for the event? Call us or order the book on our website in advance, and we’ll get it signed for you.
